Spanish CLEP - any recent takers
#1
Hi All,

I have looked through the feedback for the Spanish CLEP and don't see a lot of recent feedback. Has anyone taken this recently? I'd like to take it in next weekend and want to know what to expect other than bad audio lol. I am aiming for 6 credits, not 12. I've been trying to get through Shaum's Grammar book and have been using Spanish Hour and reading the FSI resource. Anyone have any extra tips?

Are you a native speaker, or have an excellent grasp of the language? If yes, you should be good to go. If not, do not take this exam lightly. When I took it a few years back, I came out with a headache with all the audio and the extra tight headphones on my head. Everything on the exam (including instruction are in Spanish) so that is why I asked if you had a good grasp of the material. It is worth up to 2 years of foreign language if you score well enough.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Thank you for responding. Not native, but I remember the basics from HS Spanish a million years ago. My concern is with verb tenses. Which should I focus on learning? Present, future imperfect past? I have a chart that has present, imperfect past, preterit past, future, conditional, present subjunctive, imperfect past subjunctive, future subjunctive, and imperative. Oh, and gerund and participle. Do I need to know *all* of these? Thank you!!!

To be totally frank with you, the exam covers more advance areas. You won't get a question like, what is the word for "library"? It is usually a passage in Spanish, with questions in Spanish asking about certain information about it. For example, there was one audio where I was listening to a speech about travel agencies and travelling to South America, then the follow on questions were like (in Spanish of course); according to the speaker, what is the best time of year to travel to Argentina?

So it's not really a test of Spanish knowledge, but more specifically, fluency. In my opinion, you should have a full year's worth (hopefully two) of Spanish under your belt. Go to the CLEP website or your local library and get a hold on the official CLEP practice questions so you know the exact level of knowledge you need to have. I wish I could be more help, but I took it well over 6 years ago and I am hispanic, although I am 3rd generation native English speaker.

I do fine with the passages on the practice tests. I can understand what is being said and on the Peterson's tests (I've read these are easier than the actual CLEP), I get all of those right. I struggle with choosing the right verb tense in the fill in the blank stories. I do well on the listening portion as well and get a decent number of those right, trying to only listen to the passages once, but it's those darn fill in the blanks!
I am planning to get either the CLEP prep book or the REA. I do have Schaum's grammer outline as well.

Thank you, I appreciate your advice!

I you are getting many correct in practice, you should do fine. I know I didn't do too great and still got out with 6 credits. I just barely missed getting 12. As far as Apps, have you tried Duolingo? I thought that was a pretty good app in learning the verb tense. Good luck!

I hope so! Like I said, I only want the 6 to fill my global issues requirement, but it would be just my luck to get a test with a lot of those blanks. I just started Duolingo this morning. I tested out of a few areas, so I'm going to try to get through the program ASAP. I have a lot of downtime at work, so I am going to use it to my advantage! I am glad to hear it is pretty good in helping with verb tense.
I'm trying to graduate this semester, so it's kind of important lol. After this test, I am studying to macro and micro which I'd like to take in mid-November and I'll be done. Hallelujah!
