Easiest routes to CPA and other accounting qualifications
Posted by: Robson - 08-15-2024, 02:17 AM - Forum: Graduate School Discussion - Replies (10)

Certified Public Accountant (United States)

CPAs in the US have audit rights and can sign off on financial documents. To become a US CPA, you need to have:

(i) accounting education,

(ii) working experience, and

(iii) passed the CPA exam.

Each state has different requirements for these.

The most inclusive state to become a CPA is Washington. Through the Washington route, you can be a US CPA by doing UMPI accounting courses and working in a business-related, non-audit role.

Washington State CPA requirements
- Accounting education: 150 credit hours, including a bachelors or higher degree, 24 hours of accounting credits (with 15 UL or grad credits), and 24 hours of business admin credits
    * Does not require degree to be from US RA institution

- Working experience requirements: Minimum 12 months + 2000 hours of any employment that involves accounting skills.
    * Has to be verified by a US CPA with 5 years experience

- CPA exam: Can be completed around the world with no additional in-state requirements
    * No residency/citizenship requirements

Texas
Unlike Washington, some states require (i) specific, in-person RA coursework that forms part of a degree; (ii) accounting work directly under a CPA; (iii) the exam to be taken in the US, with US citizenship and/or state residency requirements.

As a comparison, these are the requirements for becoming a CPA in Texas:

- Accounting education: At the board's discretion.
    * Distance learning restrictions: Online credits must be "offered and accepted" for a bachelors degree or above. Community colleges and ACE credits are prohibited.
    * International learning restrictions: WES and other evaluator services are not allowed. The board, with the help of UT Austin, will decide the equivalency of international degrees.
    * Coursework restrictions: The board imposes a number of requirements for what the accounting and business admin courses should comprise.

- Experience requirements: 12 months of accounting work directly under a US-licensed CPA

- CPA exam: Has to be done in the United States.
    * Residency: No residency/citizenship requirements.

International accounting qualifications
Chartered Global Management Accountant
The CGMA qualification, offered by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), can be done online through the self-paced CIMA's Finance Leadership Program (FLP), without any in-person exams.

For a fixed annual rate, you complete 10 CGMA FLP "case study exams" at your own pace. Business or accounting degree graduates can receive exemptions for one to four courses.

This route is known to be one of the easier ways to get an accounting qualification, with some people doing all 10 modules within a few months. CIMA recommends three to four years.

One downside of the CGMA is that it doesn't give you any rights of signing financial documents.

Requirements:

- Self-paced online course, pay per year needed
- Three-years work experience in accounting and finance-related jobs, as verified by line manager

CPA Australia
An easy way to qualify as a CPA in Australia would be through the reciprocal agreement between CPA Australia and CIMA.

Under the agreement, if you qualify as a CGMA, you automatically satisfy the work, education, and examination requirements to be an Australian CPA. You only need to do an additional online course to get the CPA title.

However, Australian CPAs don't automatically have the right to sign off on audit documents. For this, you need to obtain a practice certificate, which requires additional work and education requirements.

Accounting qualifications as transfer credits
Some state boards and university degree programs recognise accounting qualifications as credits. For example, some US state boards will accept an international accounting qualification as equivalent to a degree and waive the bachelors requirement.

ACCA
The ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is an accounting body based in the UK with signing rights in a number of jurisdictions.

Ordinarily, the ACCA requires 13 exams for non-accounting degree-holders. The CGMA (which has no signing rights) can be transferred into the ACCA (which can have signing rights), resulting in five exemptions (BT, MA, FA, PM, and FM). Further exemptions can be obtained if you have an accounting degree.

Oxford Brookes University BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting
The ACCA has a partnership with Oxford Brookes University to offer a Bachelor of Science in Applied Accounting through the completion of ACCA exams.

The requirements are:
* Completion of the exams Financial Reporting (FR), Audit and Assurance (AA), and Financial Management (FM). (Everything else can be exempted.)
* Submission of a research project before May 2026, which is when the degree program ends.

If you transfer the CGMA to the ACCA, you'd have to do 9 more exams (FM can't be exempted for the degree) and submit the project. This is a relatively cheap and quick way to get a degree in accounting.

University of London MSc in Professional Accounting
Last, the UoL MSc Professional Accounting is an online program that gives significant credit exemptions to qualified accountants, including CPA, CGMA, and ACCA members.

Whereas a UK are typically 180 UK credits, the UoL MPA is only 60 credits and can be completed in just 6 months:

* 2 elective courses in accounting or finance
* Submission of a capstone project
* 6-months if full time; ~5000 pounds

  Question regarding pierpont application
Posted by: JordanF - 08-15-2024, 12:36 AM - Forum: Associates Degrees Discussion - Replies (2)

Hello,
During the final step of the pierpont application, it asks me if I have previously taken any college classes or courses. The only courses that I've taken were ACE credits through Sophia, and a 1 credit ASU IT course. I assume that the Sophia ones don't count, but what about the ASU IT course? I don't want the wrong answer to accidentally screw up my application.

I greatly appreciate any response,
Jordan

Also, in case it's important, here are the courses I've completed

  Equivalency for Study.com Chemistry
Posted by: wow - 08-14-2024, 09:07 PM - Forum: TESU - Thomas Edison State University Discussion - Replies (16)

I was looking on the Study.com TESU equivalencies page today (https://study.com/college/school/thomas-...rsity.html) and saw Study.com's Chemistry 111 and 112 with lab (4 credits) listed as equivalent to "Basic" Chemistry 1 & 2 (3 credits). I'm wondering if the 3 credits refers to taking the courses without lab (which is an option)?

Also, Basic Chemistry isn't in TESU's catalog, so I wonder if it means "General" Chemistry--or if this is something TESU made up to avoid giving people credit for General Chemistry/because TESU does that a lot.

Can anyone who has transferred in one or both of these Study.com courses WITH lab confirm for me how they transferred, and whether the lab was accepted for a fourth credit or not?
I am not enrolled in TESU but my nephew and I are looking to keep it open as an option for the future, which is why I'd like to know.

Question GEC Sophia credit question
Posted by: ecrane100 - 08-14-2024, 03:20 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (5)

Texas, USA
Your Age:27
BA in Psychology
Current Regional Accredited Credits: 15

Current ACE Credits: 33

Hey all, excited to be a part of the forum!

Just had a quick question with regard to UMPI's GEC requirements:

Would Sophia's U.S. Government class work for both 1C and 5E? I've read through the plans, roadmap, and transfer equivalents table but have been unable to draw a clear conclusion.
My motivation here is to skip workplace communication or public speaking if possible, so I'm wondering if taking U.S. Govt would negate the requirement for those classes.
Thanks in advance!

Universidad Virtual Educanet de Mexico - UVE
Posted by: Avidreader - 08-14-2024, 01:25 PM - Forum: General "Big 3", B&M colleges, and other colleges - Replies (3)

This is a private Mexican university and all their degrees have RVOE, fully online that seems to have fewer hurdles to sign up for the degree or pay tuition like other Mexican universities.
I can't find official tuition on the website, but some pages say monthly tuition is 2000 MXN a month (106 USD) on average, some degrees cost more, others less. Can't find costs of their masters degrees. I don't know if tuition is charged by quarter or month, which makes estimating full cost of the degree to be hard without more info.
I notice their degrees are filled with filler courses and for example, their marketing degree has very few courses that are fully related to the degree. Most bachelors last 3 years 8 months, but the shortest degrees only last 2 years 8 months.

One thing that is quite interesting is the university claims to be rather transfer friendly and will exempt courses if you have done them elsewhere.
It could be a matter of having someone get a Pierpont BOG degree with Sophia courses in math, Business or maybe a google certificate and be a guinea pig. There is a limit to how much a bachelors could be shortened. The mexican government stipulates a bare minimum of months to validate a bachelors degree, but this could accelerate it a few months and save several hundred dollars.
Requirements are streamlined: birth certificate no older than 6 months, curp, proof of address like a utility bill, highschool diploma and 6 photographs.
All payments can be done via bank transfer or credit card. No mention on the website the requirements or additional costs for foreigner students.
The tricky part for bachelors is to perform the social service abroad or online. This university has a partnership with the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, which allows students to do their internship at any Mexican embassy or consulate worldwide 4 hours a day 5 days a week for a minimum of 80 hours.

Bachelor degrees:

Business administration
International commerce
Digital communication
Public accounting
Law
Education
Marketing
Pedagogy
Psychology
Biotechnology Engineering (aimed at pharmacology. Has a lot of physics and chemistry courses)
Logistics and transportation
Industrial and administration engineering
Software engineering

Masters degrees

Sales direction
Digital marketing and E commerce

New online degrees from top Indian universities
Posted by: Robson - 08-14-2024, 12:44 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

The IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) have recently launched a couple of new programs:

1. IIT Madras BS in Electronic Systems (launched September 2023; ~USD $7,000; proprietary LMS + has compulsory on-campus lab sessions)
2. IIT Guwahati BSc (Hons) in Data Science and AI (launched mid 2023; ~USD $4,000; Coursera)

This is in addition to a number of existing courses, including:

- The very popular IITM BS in Data Science and Applications (~USD $4,000), which now has about 29,000 students.
- A Coursera-hosted BSc (Hons) in Computer Science by BITS Pilani (~USD $4,000 to $6,000), a very prestigious STEM university in India.
- The (also Coursera-hosted) MBA in Business Analytics (~$1,900) by Jindal University, which I believe is the cheapest online government-recognised masters on the market.

There are, apparently, over 500 online degrees now accredited by the Indian government. I checked out some of the degrees mentioned in the link, and it seems like degrees from other universities aren't that much cheaper than the IIT/BITS Pilani courses (at least USD $3,000), despite being from lower-tier/ranked universities.

Does anyone know of any cheaper online courses from Indian universities? I wouldn't mind enrolling in a program that's less than a thousand dollars a year, just for fun.

Universidad Virtual del estado de Michoacan UNIVIM
Posted by: Avidreader - 08-14-2024, 04:04 AM - Forum: Graduate School Discussion - Replies (3)

Yup, yet another online public Mexican university! The UVEG is gaining so much popularity that other states are opening their own online state schools, and the UNIVIM has very affordable degrees that seem to be comparable in price as the UVEG.
The UNIVIM has some degrees that I have seldom ever seen being offered online, so perhaps there are students that could benefit from going here.
Bachelors degrees:
3 year degrees
Public Administration
Sports culture and fitness
Cooperation (Might be a Psychology related degree?)
Law and Juridic studies
Education with inclusion focus
Gender studies
Public safety and citizen attention

4 year degrees
Educational planning and evaluation
Herbolary and Phytotherapy (seems like an adjacent homeopathic degree but not medicine per se)
Agroindustial development Engineering

Classes seem to open I think twice a year and need at least 35 applicants. Classooms maximum 70 students prioritized based on a first serve sign up basis. Everyone does a propedeutic introduction course for 240 MXN (13 USD). Their schedule seem to be Sept-Dec, I will assume the spring term is also 4 months long. Non mexicans pay around 840 MXN additional fee.

Documents needed to sign up for bachelors:
Birth certificate
Highschool grades. Both birth certificates and highschool degrees from abroad need apostille and Spanish translation.
1 black and white photo
Photo ID (INE voting card/passport)
Proof of address like a utility bill
Curp (or foreign national ID equivalent)

Masters degrees:

Access to information, transparency and anti corruption
Public administration and digital government
Productivity quality
Educational competencies for educational action
Communications
Physical culture (sports fitness)
Juridical defense and human rights
Organizational human development
Science education (teaching degree focused on science)
Quality and business management
Management and environment evaluation
Educational innovation
Oral trials in penal matters (law degree)
Alternative media of solving controversies (not sure if this is law degree or audiovisual)
Public health
Social inclusion
Citizen safety
Educational teaching for tranversality of gender (I think it is teaching with gender studies focus)

Sign up for masters seems to be similar as bachelors. Their propedeutic course costs 1932 mxn (102 USD). This payment can be done at a bancomer bank. Not sure if they can let you do that payment via bancomer app or credit card.

Masters have inscriptions 5804 mxn (306 USD) I suppose twice a year. Like bachelors, masters students are charged 200 mxn a month to use the online platform.

Doctorates

Constitutional law and amparo
Education with learning technology and knowledge
Public politics, local government and development
Environmental policies and governorship
Public policies for the health sector

Doctorates need 10 students to sign up each semester to open the class. Propedeutic course costs 1933 mxn (102 USD). The monthly fee to use the website is 200 mxn just like the other degrees. Doctorate has an inscription cost of 11,048 MXN (583 USD), I will presume this expense is every 6 months.

There are also diplomados or certificate programs being offered:
Tutoring for virtual platforms
Educational skills
Instructional designers (not sure if this is IT related degree)
Educational intervention
Formulation and evaluation of investment projects
Herbolary clinic
Gender and social development
Digital tools for online mediation
Evaluation and environment development
Analysis of restorative justice with gender perspective

Signs ups 3 times a year in February, May and August.

Certificate programs require birth certificate, photo ID and curp (or the ID number equivalent for foreigners)

Costs 200 mxn a month to use the platform plus the propedeutic course 1932 mxn, inscription fee of 5800 MXN and a 594 MXN fee for the diploma. Payments via bancomer. Certificate programs give 16 hours per week, seems like they have an average 4 modules.

The school also offers a short degree in Mexican sign language for the same costs as their masters.

Other interesting degrees that I think are treated somewhat similarly as certificates are courses in mezcal production, english-spanish translation, digital journalism, anticorruption, peace culture, data protection, environmental impact, math teaching, chemistry teaching, physics teaching, and sustainable development among some other courses.

  Transfer cybersecurity minor/major into UMPI?
Posted by: Robson - 08-14-2024, 12:17 AM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (14)

Cybersecurity minor?
First, given the number of IT credits available on Coursera, would it be possible to transfer a cybersecurity minor into a UMPI YourPace degree using relatively easily obtainable alt credits? This is the mapping I have in mind:

COS 101 - Introduction to Computer Science | (?)
COS 110 - Programming Fundamentals | SAS Programmer Professional Certificate - 3 LL ACE credits (Introduction to Programming)
COS 210 - Introduction to Information Security | Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate - 3 LL ACE credits (Security Fundamentals)
COS 232 - Introduction to Cyber Forensics | IBM Cybersecurity Professional Certificate - 4 LL ACE credits (Digital Forensics and Incident Response)

(elective) COS 290 - Special Topics in Cybersecurity | IBM Cybersecurity Professional Certificate - 2 UL ACE credits (Advanced Computer Concepts)
(elective) COS 410 - Cybersecurity I | Google Cloud Cybersecurity Professional Certificate - 3 UL ACE credits (Cybersecurity Risk Management)

I note that past Coursera credits have transferred as electives rather than the specific credits above, but at the same time, I'm thinking that since the cybersecurity minor is a new course, they might re-evaluate the courses to match the new cybersecurity requirements on petition.

Cybersecurity major?
Second, is it possible to transfer second majors into a YourPace degree, just as some people have transferred minors in? And if so, this is the cybersecurity degree plan I'm thinking of (for the courses not above):

Major Requirements (Business)

  • BUS 101 - Introduction to Business 3 credits | Offered through YourPace
  • BUS 343 - Project Risk and Cost Management 3 credits | Offered through YourPace
  • BUS 345 - Database Management 3 credits | Offered through YourPace
Major Requirements (CS)
  • COS 120 - Introduction to Data Structures 3 credits | SDC CS201 Data Structures and Algorithms
  • COS 240 - Network Concepts 3 credits | Coursera Microsoft Cybersecurity - 3 LL credits (Networking Fundamentals)
  • COS 340 - Computer Security 3 credits | Microsoft SC-900 exam, which currently transfers at CS3XX according to MaineStreet. Possible alternatives: CompTIA Security+, although MaineStreet shows COS1XX but for a prep course; Saylor CS402 Computer Communications and Networking, which is only ACE accredited at 3 LL credits and on MaineStreet transfers to COS 240.
  • COS 350 - Databases and Database Security 3 credits | Coursera IBM Data Science - 3 UL credits (Advanced Topics in Data Science). Alternative: SDC CS303 Database Management (transfers to COS 350 according to MaineStreet)
  • COS 440 - Network Security 3 credits | SDC CS336 Network Forensics
  • COS 485 - Cybersecurity Capstone 3 credits | Waived, replaced with UL CS Coursera credit
  • COS 495 - Cybersecurity or Computer Science Internship 3 credits | Waived, replaced with UL CS Coursera credit
  • MAT 201 - Probability and Statistics I 3 credits * | Sophia Statistics
Electives
  • Business Elective (higher than BUS 101) 3 credits | Offered through YourPace
  • Computer Science Elective 3 credits | Coursera Google Cloud Data Analytics - 3 UL credits in Cloud Computing
  • MAT 131 - Calculus I 4 credits | Sophia Calculus
  • BUS 210 - Organizational Communication 3 credits | Offered through YourPace
Final thoughts
The ACE credit rating for Saylor CS101 has currently expired, so I'm unsure where an alternative intro to CS course can be found. I made a post yesterday that noted that CS50X on EdX should, according to the ACE website, give 3 credits upon completion - but I don't know what's the current status between the EdX and ACE partnership. Of the top of my head, two things I can think of are: (i) transfer in an UL CS elective, which should (in principle) satisfy the Intro to CS requirement by being a higher level course; (ii) credit bank the Saylor credential through TESU TECEP credit banking. I also see that on the Wiki, Sophia Intro to Networking transfers in as a CS elective, but on MaineStreet it transfers to CS 101.

Also wondering how the new free ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity would transfer. On the ACE website it says 2 credits for a "vocational certificate".

CS50 on EdX issues ACE credits?!
Posted by: Robson - 08-13-2024, 10:36 AM - Forum: Saylor.org, Straighterline, Study.com, OnlineDegree.com, Sophia.Org Discussion - Replies (13)

I was looking through the ACE National Guide when I found that Harvard's popular Introduction to Computer Science, CS50X, is apparently accredited at 4 LD credits. This is apparently different from the CS50 credits that are issued directly through Harvard College/Extension School/Summer School.

I couldn't find how exactly to get these credits, however. It seems like no one on the internet has really talked about this. I looked up CS50 and EdX on Credly, but couldn't find any badges.
