  Student punished for using AI

I wonder how the school knew he used AI. ChatGPT will answer the same question in different ways due to its algorithm to provide unique answers. In my last degree program I had to do peer reviews, and I was certain that some were written using AI. I pasted the text to ChatGPT and asked if those were written by AI, and it gave the same answer, "it was written by someone with advanced writing skills, or had help from AI". That's not proof.

BLS Degree Complete- Big Thank You!!
Posted by: dm.hans32 - 10-15-2024, 04:50 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (3)

To everyone on this forum that has helped me out, thank you so much for the guidance you've provided. I can happily say that I received my final grade in my last UMPI class (a 4)( and have finally completed the required coursework to finish my undergrad journey!

After trying (and failing) college several times between 2009 and 2016, I started again in January of 2024. I had somewhere to the tune of 30 RA credits and some military JST credits mixed in. Since then, I have completed 46 Sophia credits, 9 Coursera credits and 30 UMPI Credits. I also received my BOG AAS with emphasis in criminal justice in the spring and used that as springboard to keep me going.

I completed 10 UMPI courses in two YP terms, and I will graduate with a BLS degree with minors in criminal justice, history and political science.

It hasn't all been smooth sailing. It seemed like life got in the way as much as possible- a few bouts with COVID, a nasty case of shingles, and both parents dealing with some scary illnesses, but I made it through. This forum is truly a great place to draw guidance, inspiration and motivation from.

To anyone who is still plugging away at their degree- keep going! You will get through it and it will all be worth it at the end.

Thanks again, and take care.

2 free Mexican cinema classes in Spanish might confer credits
Posted by: Avidreader - 10-14-2024, 02:01 PM - Forum: Free Courses and Certificates and Good Deals - No Replies

The prestigious UNAM university has a separate language institute aimed at foreigners learning Spanish which are open to anyone and confer college credit. Usually classes are twice a week on zoom for 90 minutes and you write a short essay at the end about a topic you saw in class that interests you.

Usually courses are paid, but the UNAM is offering 2 cinema history and culture classes worth 3 credits each free of charge!

Hurry up and sign up because the class starts next week if you are interested! This class lasts 1 month, ends in late November.

Classes require around a B2 level Spanish, although it is possible B1 level might be sufficient for this class since it might be tailored at novice speakers.

University of the People transfer/graduation issue
Posted by: tdat314 - 10-14-2024, 12:17 PM - Forum: UoPeople - University of the People Discussion - Replies (1)

Just for fun, I took some classes at University of the people, for their associate in computer science program.

I decided to transfer in my other credits to finish out the degree, and lo and behold, I only needed one final class to finish the program. After taking this final class, I applied for graduation.

This past week, I received an email from my "advisor" stating that they had made a mistake and that they had transferred in 16 credits, when only 15 are allowed and that they will be refunding a transfer class of my choice and that i will need to take another class to finish the program.

Doesn't this come across really weird? Like how is it my fault that they incorrectly assigned transfer credit?

This degree program isn't super important to me, but it would be nice to finish it out and not take additional classes with UoP, as it is not the best experience, imo

CIM Deleted Records Older than 25 years
Posted by: dleewo - 10-14-2024, 10:47 AM - Forum: Graduate School Discussion - Replies (14)

My wife has an interesting dilemma and I'm looking for advice.

Approximately 30 years ago, she obtained a diploma from The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).  This was equivalent to a Bachelors.

She is now trying to apply to apply to do a Masters in Legal Studies in the US and has to get WES to do what they do to let the schools she is applying to know it's equivalent to a Bachelors.  The program requires a Bachelors degree to be accepted.

The problem is that CIM has DELETED all records older than 25 years.  They even sent her a letter stating as such.  Apparently this was done due to various privacy laws in the UK.

She is reaching out to WES to see what can be done and she is talking to FSU (Florida State University) trying to explain what is going on and to see how she can move forward with her application.

All my wife has is an old letter from CIM that has the courses she took and the grades she got.

Hah anyone been in this situation where your school records were purged and were you still able to get into grad school?

UMPI YourPace BA History & Political Science - transfer questions.
Posted by: Patchouli_Skoal - 10-13-2024, 10:45 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (11)

Hi All. Newbie here. I'm looking at enrolling in UMPI's BA in History & Political Science - History concentration. Political Science option would also be fine if it is easier or faster. I have an extensive background in business, but no desire to study more of anything business-related so the BBA options aren't appealing. I'd like to transfer in the full 90 credits so that I only need 10 classes, if possible. I'm good at writing papers which I understand is the primary method of evaluation. Completing my undergrad is mostly a personal goal, but it will also check the box professionally regardless of the major.

I reviewed the wiki and it looks like I still need English Comp II and Intro to Sociology to meet UMPI's GE's. I don't like either of those options on Sophia, so I'm considering CLEP for both. I think I need the College Composition one with essays - not modular - to get credit for Comp II, but please let me know if I'm wrong. Or better, if I misunderstood the GE's and don't need one or both of these classes. If English Comp II is better at UMPI then CLEP, then I'm open to that as well.

I'm also wondering if I can CLEP out of HTY115 and HTY116 (World Civilization I and II), since they are part of the History concentration requirements and they show as accepted on MaineStreet? If UMPI also accepts my college American Government Class as POS101, I think that would leave me with 9 classes left in the major and one elective.

I appreciate any insight anyone has to offer. I'd also love thoughts on what a realistic number of classes is per term at 30ish hours a week. For context, I averaged about 3-5 days to complete 2 Sophia classes (not counting time waiting for touchstone grades). Some took a couple of hours (looking at you College Readiness) and others took 10 days (Statistics ugh).

Your Location: Washington State, USA
Your Age: 50+
What kind of degree do you want?: BA - History/Political Science. Would consider similar (non-STEM) majors if easier/faster.

Current Regional Accredited Credits:
Bucks County Community College - 24 Semester (all show as transfer on MaineStreet equivalency tool except as noted)

Human Services Work I  (not listed on MaineStreet - maybe elective?)
Intro to Psychology
Effective Speaking
English Composition I
Principles of Macroeconomics (probably elective since took Microeconomics on Sophia which fulfills ECO207)
Geography of the US and Canada (not listed on MaineStreet - maybe elective?)
US History II
American National Government (not listed on MaineStreet - seems like should transfer to POS101 American Government?)

Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits:
Sophia - 63 Semester

Visual Communications
Intro to Ethics
Intro To Business
Art History II
Environmental Science
Intro to Information Technology
Essentials of Managing Conflict (1) (Not sure if this will get credit since I also completed Conflict Resolution)
Intro to Nutrition
Developing Effective Teams (1)
Conflict Resolution
US History I
Lifespan Development
Intro to College Mathematics
Spanish I
Spanish II
Human Biology
Human Biology Lab (1)
Criminology
Project Management
Intro to Statistics
College Readiness
Principles of Finance
Microeconomics

Any certifications or military experience?:

Yes, current SHRM-CP certification.

Budget: Prefer to finish for <$10,000
Commitments: Work full time and home responsibilities.
Dedicated time to study: 30ish hours per week - 3-4 in the evening and 6-8 on most weekend days.
Timeline: As quickly as possible. Would like to complete before end of 2025, assuming I can enroll in time for the term beginning in January and complete all CLEP before then.
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: None

Finished my MAOL in 5 weeks and 3 days!!
Posted by: CCCollege - 10-13-2024, 08:38 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (6)

I finished my MAOL in just under 6 weeks (Fall 1 - 2024).   This is not easy breezy, I put in many hours every day.

I've written about 50 papers/PowerPoint presentations, read many sources, watched many hours of YouTube videos on 2X, and applied tons of knowledge I already possessed from experience and books I've read.   I'm ever so grateful that most of my reading has been professional development/leadership focused.  That all helped me so much!

And now, my gift to you all, is this overview of the current day MAOL.  Certainly, this could change, but I did 10 courses, and I'm very happy with what I learned, the projects I got to do that I can immediately use in my career, and I enjoyed nearly every professor I had.

Happy studies!!
