Shocked Real estate prices in Texas crazy cheap?
Posted by: David1477 - 12-15-2024, 08:02 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (35)

Hi guys.

I currently live in Belarus, but I consider moving to the US for better career prospects.

I am used to boring Soviet commie block houses, so my standards for "a good place to stay" are comparatively low.

A 1-bedroom/studio apartment with about 300 square feet would be totally fine for me.

I heard that Zillow seems to be a common website to look for housing, and I checked a couple of cities.

I found several condos in Houston, TX, for like $60,000-$80,000. Example: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2832-...5390_zpid/

This seems crazy affordable to me, since 2-3 bedroom apartments in Belarus cost roughly the same, but these buildings were built like 50 years ago, and the local monthly median net salary is like $450 (roughly a tenth of the salaries in Houston).

So, are condos in Texas just so crazy affordable, or am I missing something important? It seems too good to be true, and I know that most people on this forum live in the US, so maybe you can help me understand the situation. I would be very thankful!

  Managerial Accounting Final Question

My wife mentioned that the Managerial Accounting Final instructions reference Appendix A, but she’s unable to locate it. I sat with her while she searched, and we couldn’t find it either. Is she possibly overlooking something?

$250/SH Masters Programs for Active Duty Servicemembers
Posted by: rgran53 - 12-14-2024, 07:48 PM - Forum: Military Discussion - Replies (5)

I had a long conversation with the Navy College Office earlier this week. Key takeaways:

1. Tuition Assistance will pay $250/SH for both undergrad and graduate degrees. It will pay up to two classes per semester. Anything over that is out-of-pocket.

2. You get 120 semester hours worth of lifetime finding. Example- If you go to a CBE school like WGU or UMPI and the military pays for 12 SH throughout your program, but you accelerated and finished the entire degree, you would still have 108 SH worth of lifetime credit funding for future degrees.

3. They will pay for graduate certificates, bachelors degrees, certifications, and graduate programs.

4. The Navy College Office provided me with the attached document. The document lists all the schools the Navy College Office is tracking who charge $250/SH for masters degrees. This means that it would be 100% covered by TA, as long as you only take two classes a semester and don't go over your 120 lifetime semester hours! I figured this might help out any AD servicemembers who are looking for affordable masters degrees, covered by TA!

For UMPI, is acceptance the same as enrollment?
Posted by: 00u00u00 - 12-14-2024, 03:33 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (14)

Hello, I was on track to finish my WGU degree, but at this point I am enrolled and struggling due to the proctored exams and the math classes I have to keep taking. I asked to switch degree programs in hopes that they may rexamine my transfer credits (I hear this is a workaround) but I'm also considering just moving on completely. I can write papers all day everyday which is why I considered UMPI but, I would need to finish by May of 2025 and the earliest start date is March, but I may consider it if it's possible to finish in 2 months. SNHU doesn't really offer acceleration either since its 2 courses per term and if the max they allow is 90 credits, then I'd only be done by December of next year. What are my options here? there are a couple sophia classes that I passed with 75+ grades which I know COSC wouldn't accept. I did get the BOG from Pierpont with some of this, but I would imagine sending in that transcript would be credit laundering

  Straighter Line Textbook Question
Posted by: kikikoder - 12-14-2024, 11:52 AM - Forum: Saylor.org, Straighterline, Study.com, Sophia.Org, Coursera Discussion - Replies (4)

Can anyone shed any light on reading the textbook for Micro Bio and/or Nutrition?

The previous course I took had a Chapter listed to read under each Topic. These two do not mention it at all in the lessons. It's just listed as the title of the book on the syllabus.

Am I expected to know the book cover to cover? I found the books on Open Stax but the chapters don't really match the title/order of the courses.

I don't really mind reading textbooks #nerd if I need to but don't want to waste my time if its not covered on tests or the final.

Thanks in advance Smile

Fastest MBA or other degree Starting Today
Posted by: sinak - 12-14-2024, 02:17 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (14)

Would LOVE some help with this from you all.

I need to get an MBA, masters degree, or even just an associates from an accredited unviersity as soon as humanly possible for my Canadian permanent residency status to be renewed. Otherwise I and my family will all have to leave Canada, which will be devestating. Ideally I want to be fully done by mid January at the latest. A masters gets me many more points than an associates.

What would be the absolute fastest way to get one of the above if I were to start today?

I have unlimited time for coursework every day, and am very capable. I already have an WEC-approved bachelors.

I have been reading the wiki and trying to wrap my head around UMPI vs WGU vs TESU and transferring in Sophia courses etc but I'm so short on time, and would love help from anyone in the group who is very knowledgeable.

Location: Halifax, NS, Canada
Ideal degree: In order of preference, MBA, Any masters, associates (each kind gets me points)
Age: 32
Budget: $6k
Commitments: Child here in NS, have a full-time job but can take time off.
Dedicated Time to Study: 24/7
Existing credits: none

Thank you in advance!

I am looking for recommendations for online schools to complete an associates & bachelors in Finance & IT (Data Analytics) or Project Management; using as many credits as I can using Study.com. Looking to pay out of pocket.

I am not an active poster but this forum has been a big help to me for many years.

  SWAYAM
Posted by: NotJoeBiden - 12-13-2024, 02:45 AM - Forum: Free Courses and Certificates and Good Deals - No Replies

I have not seen people talk about SWAYAM in recent years, but they are a collection of free MOOCs set up by the Indian government. Some courses can be taken for credit at the undergrad and postgrad level after completion of a proctored exam (~$40).

I do not know if anyone has successfully transferred these courses outside of the Indian public education system or for other online programs, but it might be of use to people on this forum. They have some more specific and niche courses not offered online elsewhere.
