  TESU doesn't accept SOPHIA?
Posted by: burbuja0512 - 07-06-2024, 07:22 PM - Forum: Saylor.org, Straighterline, Study.com, OnlineDegree.com, Sophia.Org Discussion - Replies (11)

I'm looking at TESU for my son and noticing that TESU isn't listed as a partner for Sophia.org on the Sophia site.    But looking at other people's degree plans here, it seems that TESU DOES accept Sophia.  IS it correct to say that TESU WILL accept Sophia credits?

So assuming that TESU DOES accept Sophia, but aren't a partner, how am I supposed to figure out which Sophia courses correspond to the proper TESU course?  I know that some are really obvious for example Spanish I, but some courses might not be so obvious and I have no idea how I'm supposed to figure this out on my own.....   Like I want to build a degree plan for my son but unless the course has the identical name, I'm not sure how I would know how to align the Sophia credit to the TESU credit.....

Sorry for my overwhelmed posts today.   I haven't done this in years and have just been assigned the work to figure out my husband's and my son's degrees.  Husband is level urgent and son is less urgent, but since I'm the "expert" because I have the COSC degree I need to have this all down pat.   HA - but I have the degree from back in the days of the "Big 3" so I know N O T H I N G.

Thanks for your help.   I promise to figure all this out!

"Easiest" (Low math) UMPI Business Degree or other FAST Degree
Posted by: burbuja0512 - 07-06-2024, 04:17 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (14)

Hi all - long time no see!!!!!

Hubby is out of work after 10 years at the same job.  He never needed a degree and in spite of my nagging never got one.  Well, now suddenly the job market is telling him he needs one!!   So we are looking at the absolute QUICKEST path to a degree.  Some sort of business management would be the best and we're looking to enroll him in a university while he is job hunting so he can put "degree anticipated" on his resume as he does the job search.   Being enrolled WHILE he is job hunting is REALLY important to the process, so please keep this in mind!

I am old and out of practice at this and obviously got my degree when things were different.   I'm thinking after doing a TON of reading on the site that UMPI looks like the best option since we want him enrolled right away.   Though please do tell me if I'm wrong.

What he needs is a degree plan that assumes he's enrolled and since he's unemployed, he has the whole day to work on study, but he's terrible at math.   His experience begs management and business, though so what would you guys suggest?   All of this Sophia and Study stuff came out after I graduated but I'm willing to learn.    He's also willing to just do the classes at the actual university too.   He has a handful of CLEP and DSST tests (that he did when I pestered him years ago) along with a couple of old community college courses, but let's just assume he's starting from zero.

HELP.

After a year off of school and getting settled into my new position at work, I'm starting my Masters in Public Affairs at UTRGV next month! I know this program has been talked about before, but I'm not sure if anyone has actually done the program.

Degree can be completed in a year if you are able to dedicate enough time for 2 classes during the 7-week accelerated terms. I'm not under a time crunch for this degree, so my plan is 18-22 months taking only one class per accelerated semester for most semesters.

The school has a ton of grants and scholarships available including a $2k scholarship for all graduate programs that I have never seen go away. Bringing this program to $14k max. Some students can get it for significantly less. Due to the Texas firefighter exemption, I am blessed to have my tuition covered for this particular program.

If anyone is curious about the college, the application process, or this degree let me know and I'll be happy to answer them as I go further through this process!

Affordable Math degree for non-US (international) citizen
Posted by: OtterDen - 07-05-2024, 10:33 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (22)

It has been a while I have been searching for a Math degree. I would like to have a math degree on my belt before I proceed to my next milestone in five years' time - an engineering related master.

I checked the following options:

  1. TESU: Sample TESU BA Mathematics Degree Plan - Degree Forum Wiki (miraheze.org)
  2. SNHU (US): SNHU Mathematics Degree Plan - Degree Forum Wiki (miraheze.org)
  3. Open University UK.

They are quite popular as fully online math degree. However, they all cost pretty expensive, and they are way out of my budget.

Then, I saw this post about SNHU (India) division. It is for non-US citizens only. Link here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...nt-in-SNHU .

Quote:for International students (not applied if you hold USA passport), you can enroll in SNHU's India Online program. The courses are taught in English by Indian instructors, and you can receive a 60-65% scholarship, This scholarship reduces the total cost to just $3,735 for four years, which amounts to $933 per year.

This aligns with my budget. The cost is cheap enough for me. And the Indian division also offers the Bachelor's of Mathematics degree.
  • The goal of achieving this degree is to getting good math education with help from tutors. I saw reviews from current students on Reddit that SNHU (US) offers good math education. I will try not to transfer math credits, but to complete math courses at SNHU (India).
  • I hope I can be exempt/transfer from all of the General Education credits (the social science, history stuff) since I already have a Bachelor from a UK institution previously. My Bachelor in UK does not have similar General Education courses though. I may have to ask.
The math course offer from the India division seems the same as the US original one. For that price, it might be more cost effective to study the courses in SNHU (India) than going to the online education platform.

ENC-1101 English Comp 101
CGS-1100 Microcomputer Applications
CET-1178 Computer Hardware Support
CGS-2557 Internet Technologies
CTS-2120 Security Fundamentals
CTS-2134 Networking Fundamentals

CCJ-1020 Intro to Criminal Justice

Sophia Learning Credits: None, yet.

Any certifications or military experience?
CompTIA Security+ and Network+
Certified Law Enforcement Officer (State of Florida)
Airline Transport Pilot (FAA)

Budget: No budget constraints.
Commitments: Full time work and a wife, but I have some extended ammounts of free time through the end of the year.
Dedicated time to study: Unlimited for the next several months.
Timeline: ASAP
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: Tuition assistance program is currently suspended by my employer.
Goal?: Obtain a bachelor degree of any type ASAP

I am wanting/needing to complete a bachelor degree of any type (BA, BS, BLS, other?), in any major, as quickly as possible.  I have a few classes noted above to transfer from a couple different state colleges in Florida, and look forward to utilizing Sofia, Study.com, and the others to transfer additional credits if able.

I know there are some colleges and universities which offer credit for completion of law enforcement academies such as Excelsior, College of Central Florida, and others.  There are also some which offer credit for possession of professional pilot certificates such as Utah Valley University and some others.

My only hard line will not attend is Liberty University as I did take two courses with them and withdrew after major disagreements with professors not following the course description or syllabus.  They both instead opted for the students to spend the semester chronicling their journey of converting their target to christianity, and the final paper critiquing why or why not you were successful, which had nothing to do with the courses.

Any suggestions on schools and/or programs which can be completed quickly would be greatly appreciated.  I have been researching UMPI, TESU, Excelsior, and others, but the amount of information is overwhelming when trying to compare school to school, program to program, against what can be completed utilizing Sophia and other methods.

Good evening, and thank you in advance for any and all advice.

  SDC CS306 Computer architecture experience
Posted by: hsufeng - 07-05-2024, 01:25 PM - Forum: Saylor.org, Straighterline, Study.com, OnlineDegree.com, Sophia.Org Discussion - Replies (9)

If you think about studying computer architecture, it seems like study.com is the cheapest option... so considering the budget, there is no choice.
Before I started this course, I saw a lot of negative reviews, especially about Assignment 1. I received my Assignment 1 grade today and am wrapping up the course, so perhaps I can share a few experiences.

If you just want to get credit for this course, I think homework 1 is a pretty time-consuming option... If you can get 90% on the quizs and a perfect score on homework 2 (which is easy, they give you detailed feedback on the homework and you just submit it again based on the feedback), then you only need a 70% on the final exam to pass this course. Does 70% seem difficult? I thought so too when I started this proctored exam. I had taken the proctored exam for the history of the Vietnam War before. The style of the questions at the end was very different from the style of the quizs, and I thought it was very difficult. But in fact, the content of the CS306 proctored exam is basically the simplest concept analysis. I even think it is easier than the usual quizzes. Because there is no question in the quiz that asks you to choose what the component image of XOR and AND is. So if you practice many mock exams, you will get a good score on the proctored exam.

If you take a proctored exam and then find out that you are a few points short of passing... and then have to do homework 1. Then maybe you can refer to my experience. They were actually pretty lenient on assignment 1... I was pretty sure my ALU didn't work at the end, but they gave me full credit anyway... (which means as long as you draw the main structure, they'll at least give you some scores...

1. In the first stage you need to come up with some new structures, here I suggest you write some 8-bit Boolean operations, because this is easy to implement in the following logisim, then you can easily get all the points in the first part. You can choose 9 simplest structures to implement. If you have no idea how to draw these structures, and don't know how to verify whether your final structure is correct, you can refer to circuitverse. This is what I learned from reddit, and I believe if you are planning to take this course, you have also seen that post. This website will give you a lot of 8-bit structures, and you just need to draw them according to them.

2. The second part of the table is easy to score. You can easily find how to complete it from the website. Then draw the MUX, the control unit and the last ALU. My suggestion is to refer to the 4-bit structure they give. You will find that the MUX is a selector, and then refer to the 4-bit structure. For the rest, you can completely repeat the 4-bit image, just change the input and output to 8-bit. Maybe this is not the correct answer, but it is enough if you want to get the points... I really hope they can give me a correct structure for reference, but apparently they don't spend too much work on this assignment to give feedback.

This course is not as good as I expected, there is not enough connection between the parts, they just put the material together loosely. The first hardest homework, they did not give a more detailed tutorial to explain many details, so many people will buy other courses to learn how to draw ALU... but fortunately they do not have high requirements for homework. So be it, at least we were able to get credits cheaply and learn something...even if the experience wasn't good. Confused

Pre WGU help with credits pleaseeee
Posted by: SantaMaria - 07-05-2024, 12:52 PM - Forum: WGU - Western Governors University Discussion - Replies (8)

I was previously going to attend UMPI but I didn't get the help I needed to feel like that was the right fit for me.  (my previous post was in UMPI thread) So I have applied to WGU and looking to start there soon to finish this bachelors finally, then move to Masters.  I was told from WGU that because I have my Associates Degree from my local Junior College that I dont need any pre-req's.

What I need help with is figuring out which degree will let me finish FASTEST according to the credits I already have.  I'm leaning towards either Marketing, Human Resources, or Business Management.  I have career knowledge in each of these fields, so any of the 3 would suffice.

Also, what can I take at Study.com to knock out some classes before enrolling?

  SDC calculate points
Posted by: homeschoolmom1 - 07-05-2024, 08:13 AM - Forum: Saylor.org, Straighterline, Study.com, OnlineDegree.com, Sophia.Org Discussion - Replies (3)

Can someone explain to me how to calculate the points in the SDC English Composition II course?

The quizzes count for 10% of the grade, assignments 70% and exam 20%. Our son got 99/100 on the quizzes and 78 on the exam. There are 6 assignments, but they are not all weighed the same (some have a maximum of 15 points and some 25). He has not submitted any of the assignments yet.

How many points does he have right now, without the assignments? Is it correct that he needs 210 to pass, just like with the courses without assignments?

Clearly, I have a mental block when it comes to percentage calculations. Maybe I should take Liberal Arts Math again Wink

You're a guinea pig? HW MBA, PG Cert, DBA!
Posted by: bjcheung77 - 07-05-2024, 03:01 AM - Forum: Graduate School Discussion - Replies (3)

So, here's the funny, if you've got the money...it's an alright or decent combo program, and here's the brief or quick low down...

Oops... I'm retyping all of this, for some reason, it didn't save my previous work!!  Anyways, HW MBA and DBA have been talked about on both the sister board and here.  They offer a 9 course MBA by exam and it can be done in a year or shorter, it's entirely online, non proctored, open book exams, plus you can use the internet (yes, you read that correctly)... Cost was about $10K USD, now it's $14.5K USD, if you pay all upfront, you get a discount of 20% and that becomes $11.6K USD for this mid-tier UK MBA.  Link: https://www.hw.ac.uk/online/postgraduate...ration.htm

PG Cert Research Methods (it's actually the DBA 'course stage') but they offer this to any student, obviously, if you're going to continue and finish the DBA, you'll need the Masters and any other prerequisites completed. Think of this as a Level 8 UK diploma but more expensive. This can be a stand alone option or the first stage of the DBA, the final or second stage is the DBA 'research' stage.  If you can finish all 3 in 3 sessions setting within the same term, you don't need an entire year. The cost for this PG Cert is roughly $4,750 USD.  Not on-campus, it's online... Link: https://www.hw.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/...gramme.htm

DBA 'research stage' is the final hurdle to this DBA, it mentions 3 years for the research stage, but if you put in a case that you did the MBA and PG Cert, plus your personal 'research', you may be able to finish this in 2 years for $11,050 USD/year, total would be $22,100 to finish the program off. I would look into this area the most as it will vary for each student. Link: https://www.hw.ac.uk/study/research/busi...ba-phd.htm

So, who has the cash flow to be the guinea pig?! Grand total would be, 14.5+4.75+22.1 = $41,350 USD for all three combined, and it would take you roughly 3 years to get all three done if you're somewhat speedy.  Oh, here's the link for the exams for distance learning and for online Canvas option, again, open book exams, even for the 3 PG Cert Research Methods classes, https://www.hw.ac.uk/ebs/study/online/examinations.htm
