  BA Degree Planning Assistance
Posted by: argaughan - 06-09-2024, 02:39 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (3)

Hello all,

I’ve been lurking here for several years and finally have the time and resources to work on completing my degree. Would love your input on the best path forward. From reading everything here, I’m thinking that UMPI is likely my best option here. I have an AAS BOG in Info Systems from Pierpont. Looking to get my bachelor’s now. I work in Business Operations and would like a degree in any helpful discipline: Business Administration, Information Systems, Project Management, etc. I have experience in all these fields and think that they would all be equally helpful on my resume. I think whichever would be the smoothest path forward would be best. I appreciate any advice or suggestions you may have. Thank you!

Sad Degree for Breaking into Tech and Further Study Options

Hello everyone
I am glad I stumbled upon this supportive community. I wish I had known about it years ago. I have been literally wasting my years compulsively searching for degree programs and postponing my dreams.

My case is really complicated and a little different.
I am planning a career change. I want to become a software engineer and go abroad.
I have zero background and near zero knowledge in the CS area right now so I am not looking for a degree purely to hack it.
I am starting my self-learning journey soon and looking for a program that can be completed in 2-2.5 years, providing guidance, structure, and supplementary materials along the way. Keeping the motivation and discipline up and learning the right things at the right time is very challenging without a proper degree program.
I hope to attend an on-campus master's degree program in the US/Canada after bachelor's degree.

OSU post-bacc program that takes 2 years to complete seemed like the perfect program for me with its great teaching, support and community but it costs $35k (around $25k with maximum transferred credits). When I add the cost of the master's program, the total amount becomes astronomical.
WGU would be good but I am not from the US.
So, it seems like I am only left with TESU. I have been thinking about speed-running TESU, but the thing is I will be spending all my free time just to pass the courses and transfer credits instead of actually trying to learn, which seems inefficient and ineffective for someone with zero background in the field.
Most of the grad schools I've checked have strict requirements too, many of them require certain courses to be graded and up to three reference letters. But my main concern for TESU is that speed-running a degree in 1 year will not really prepare me for employment or grad school, especially in this market and competition.
I’m wondering if it’s worth taking 2 years to complete the TESU program in order to better absorb the content of the curriculum. Another thing I’m curious about is whether speed-running the degree in 1 year would give me enough free time for self-study. Also, what are the chances of being accepted to an on-campus grad program after getting a TESU bachelor's? How hard is it to get reference letters?

Right now, to start studying in a structured manner and to stop wasting more time with overthinking I've applied for an online CS degree that I've found in Coursera. There are only two enrollment periods per year for the program so I didn't want to miss the chance to apply. The classes start in July.
https://www.coursera.org/degrees/bachelor-of-science-computer-science-bits
It is offered by a well-ranked Indian university and it only costs around $500 per semester. It's really an intense program with assignments, projects, quizzes, and finals... Both teaching-wise and curriculum-wise It seems much more beneficial to my learning path than TESU.
Unfortunately, there is no way to hack it. It is a 3-4 year program.
However I’ll have the opportunity to convert my earned credits into a credential at regular intervals. I have the option to exit with an associate degree at the end of year 2, a bachelor's degree at the end of year 3 or opt for an additional year to earn an honours degree at the end of Year 4. Of course, I will always have the opportunity to transfer the credits I earned there to TESU to complete my whole degree too.
To give you an idea, here are the courses I will be taking in 1st and 2nd semesters:
1st semester
*Introduction to Programming *Discrete Mathematics *Linear Algebra and Optimization *Introduction to Computing Systems
*Basic Electronics *Writing Practice
2nd semester
*Data Structures and Algorithms *Object Oriented Programming *Command Line Interfaces and Scripting *Probability and Statistics *Introduction to Logic
Do you think it would be more beneficial for my self-learning path to take first-year and additional courses here and then transfer to TESU?

It is a bit off-topic and may complicate the situation further, but I am also considering applying for an on-campus conversion master’s in CS next year in the UK. These conversion master’s programs are designed for individuals who have an undergraduate degree in a non-CS related discipline. They aim to provide a foundation in CS skills, enabling a transition into the field of CS. These programs are primarily offered in the UK and typically take only one year. I haven’t seen similar master’s programs elsewhere. Most master’s programs usually require students to have a CS degree or to have taken several CS courses.
The main advantage of conversion master’s programs is that some offer an optional industry placement year, though they do not guarantee that every student will secure a placement. The program costs around £20,000, but it is probably my best bet to break into the industry given the current market conditions.

Considering my age and background, what would be the most optimal degree choice for me?

Thank you for your time.
I am open to any suggestions.

Worst fear come true: 2 courses have been changed to 'not satisfied'
Posted by: FM1 - 06-09-2024, 12:13 AM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (5)

I have multiple emails from Jessica and Sue confirming that I have completed my degree with attached degree progress reports showing completion of all required courses. Having just checked my degree progress report (because I hadn't received any comms on degree conferral yet), two courses - MAT140 and BUS141 - are now showing as 'not satisfied'. Do I have any recourse for this?

Hello degreeforum!

I am somewhat new to the forum. I have been passively browsing this forum and the wiki for several weeks now. I have been gathering as much information as possible about each and every school recommended, including the ones that are pure competency-based. Right now, I am enrolled for UMPI's - Project Management and Information Systems. I was going to do the BAS at the recommendation of bjcheung77, but that doesn't seem plausible as I have an AA degree, not an AAS and pierpont won't allow you to earn a degree from them if you have an associate's already. UMPI accepted 62 credits from my AA (only rejected one class). At the moment, I believe UMPI is possibly the best school and I like the fact some of your undergraduate courses transfer to their master's program. However, I am open to suggestions. Below are a list of questions I have. If you can help any, it'll be greatly appreciated!

Questions:
1. What's the best double major for Project Management and Information Systems? I thought about the BA in Accounting but the other concentrations in BABA may be easier and perhaps better. I'm basically looking for good degrees with good career prospects and salaries. I know Project Management and Information Systems and Accounting would likely lead to many rewarding careers.
2. How many courses transfer over the MAOL program? I believe it is 3 or 4, right? Is that still true with the recent move to the new platform?
3. Do you recommend getting IT certificates to make up for the lack of IT classes in the program? I'm learning coding in my spare time and doing the Google IT support certificate right now. I thought about a few of the Comptia and CCNA later in life.
4. Besides UMPI, WGU and TESU seem to be the other two recommended universities. I thought about doing the BSCS/BSCIS double from TESU plus a free associate's degree, but I am not so sure. WGU BSCS looks interesting as well. Of course there are other programs at both universities, but if I am doing business, I may as well do it at UMPI since it's cheaper.

Thank you and if I need to provide any additional information, please let me know!

  georgia tech online masters

is there anyone who has experience with georgia tech online master in CS or cybersecurity i have a couple questions if you any of you guys can answer

1- what are the exams like in terms of proctored software(is it web based or works on every OS)

2- how much did you pay

3- does the degree say that its an online degree or just like any other degree

4- what are relationship with the professors like are they present or is it just like an online course? can you network and talk to other students mimicking an on campus relationship?

5- what are the acceptance rates like, ik they say GREs are not required but would they help ?

6- do they accept some transfer credit for electives or anything at all ?

last one is not a question but just a thought that i want to discuss, given how the IT world is, isnt cybersecurity degree quite useless given how much value IT recruiter just value certs and dont care about degrees, so whats the point of a cybersec degree?? is it to continue into academia ? what for cryptography, quantum computing wouldnt someone be better off doing masters in math or physics.

Map my Future: BA in Psych Plan

Hello everyone!

I'm nearly 50% done with my Sophia transfer credits and will be enrolling at UMPI (BA in Psych). I read in another thread that Workplace Writing II will fulfill the 1B objective as an alternative to English Comp II.

Does anyone have experience taking this course on Sophia? If the Touchstones are too time-consuming, it sounds like UMPIs English Comp II might be more efficient.

Thanks in advance!

Hi! I have taken the plan from this thread: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...-for-3-222

Then attempted to update it based on this link: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...quivalents

As well as this link: http://catalog.umpi.edu/preview_program....ortfolio=1

Has anyone made a similar plan? Can you advise where I might run into issues?
