Master's degree after an online degree
Posted by: Sherwood - 06-07-2024, 02:51 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (16)

Planning to finish my Metropolia Degree in August.
From the 1st of January 2023 don't give a paper degree but a "Digital Degree Certificate". It was a bit disappointing.

For those who finished an online degree from UMPI, Metropolia, WGU, TESU, etc.:

1. Did anyone enroll for a master's degree outside of the mainstream TESU/WGU/UMPI/etc. ?
2. I saw online master's programs from Nordic countries. Free for EU citizens. Does anyone have experience enrolling there?
3. Have you heard of people getting past the immigration requirements with those degrees?
4. Did people get government jobs with those degrees? Especially the ones where a degree is a "check-the-box" kind of requirement. In my country, it's mandatory to have "any degree" for 95% of government jobs.
5. Did anyone get an English teaching job in Asian countries such as China, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc.? They all need "a degree" as far as I know

Fastest way to complete BA/BS in Accounting
Posted by: Fayepie79 - 06-07-2024, 01:34 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (10)

I changed careers last year and am looking for the fastest way possible to complete my undergrad degree. I am 44 with 12 credits obtained at a community college and 24 credits obtained at ITT Tech but they are unfortunately closed and not sure if those will transfer. Any suggestions?

  SDC Intro to Programming
Posted by: homeschoolmom1 - 06-06-2024, 06:03 PM - Forum: Saylor.org, Straighterline, Study.com, OnlineDegree.com, Sophia.Org Discussion - Replies (14)

Our son is attempting to do the SDC Intro to Programming (which is Java based) before the assignments are added on June 27th.

Let me tell you, for an absolute beginner, this course is practically impossible. It assumes that you already have a basic knowledge in Java. It does not explain the basics and jumps right into the nitty gritty, without even going over syntax and methods etc.

What he has been doing is watching the lectures of this course that correspond to the SDC chapter. This course is awesome for complete beginners. Very well explained, and starts from zero. With that, he is able to grasp the SDC videos a bit better, and with a mix of sheer luck and by strategic exclusion of answers, he is doing ok on the quizzes. Will see how he does on the proctored exam.

https://www.udemy.com/course/java-for-ab...UST4U02223

If he doesn't pass it, he will either self study for some more time and then just do the assignments on SDC, or just do the Sophia versions.

I think SDC could have done better on this course. I wonder if they had complaints, and because it is easier to just add assignments than redo all of the videos, that is the route they are taking.

I finally picked a school for my BA
Posted by: staceydiane - 06-06-2024, 04:29 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (11)

I graduated from Pierpont (AoE: Information Systems) in December and I walked across the stage last month.  I've been going back and forth about what I wanted to do next, and I had considered a behavioral health counseling certificate.  I think I was selling myself short because I am definitely capable of a bachelor's degree.  Anyway, I'm going for the bachelor's.

I decided on TESU because I like what I've read about the BA in Liberal Studies degree.  I'm still disappointing my mother (who passed away 8 years ago) but at least it's not underwater basket-weaving.  I have a big interest in the social sciences but I can't narrow it down to Psychology or Sociology alone.  Even though I got the Pierpont AAS in Info Systems, I do not want to get a bachelor's in that at all.  I have been thinking about graduate school also.  I know it's putting the cart before the horse, but I saw the TESU MA in Liberal Studies with a concentration in gerontology.

I looked at the degree plan and was overjoyed that I most likely will not have to take any more math classes.  It's a miracle I passed statistics at Sophia.  I've hated math classes since 1982.

I also looked at Excelsior and UMPI but I feel that TESU would be a good choice for me.  I thought about Texas A&M-Commerce for a second, too (my family attended the main campus in College Station, but I was the rebel who did not.)  Liberty wouldn't be good for me because I'm Jewish and I don't want to have to write papers about concepts in which I don't believe.

I'm still getting all my transcripts together to send to TESU.  I already sent my Credly one but I'm probably sending the ones from Pierpont and Houston Community College tomorrow.  My Pierpont transcript says I have 84 credits (almost all Sophia and TEEX.)  Yay for all that credit Nancy gave me for the TEEX classes.

I'm doing this TESU thing on financial aid.  I don't have the $ to spend on Study.com or E-Packs.  I might be able to do Coopersmith or TECEPS from time to time.  Getting the BA may take me longer, but whatever.  I want to remain focused on the goal.

  BAS minor class selection
Posted by: tdat314 - 06-06-2024, 01:21 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (11)

Hey Everyone,

After waiting on my Pierpont BOG AAS, I've finally enrolled at UMPI in the BAS degree program with (tenatively) a triple minor in PM, MIS, and BA.

I am working on my Sophia Spanish 1 class and have already completed the Biology classes required for the GEC, just waiting on them to be applied to my credits.

I have been working on a list of all the classes I can take that will fulfill multiple requirements and was wondering if anyone has tried this degree plan before.

A transfer credit report is attached as well as a spreadsheet with all the classes for the minors.

My question is: Does anyone have any particular recommendations for which of these classes I should take and in any particular order?

Obviously, taking the ones that fulfill multiple requirements across the minors is best, but im not opposed to taking stuff outside of that, including for the MAOL down the line.

I'm torn between going to work or doing a PhD? I started my own business, and I paid for all the academic experience up there.
My age is 27.

I've never been praised, but I tell myself I'm good.
