Pre WGU help with credits pleaseeee
Posted by: SantaMaria - 07-05-2024, 12:52 PM - Forum: WGU - Western Governors University Discussion - Replies (8)

I was previously going to attend UMPI but I didn't get the help I needed to feel like that was the right fit for me.  (my previous post was in UMPI thread) So I have applied to WGU and looking to start there soon to finish this bachelors finally, then move to Masters.  I was told from WGU that because I have my Associates Degree from my local Junior College that I dont need any pre-req's.

What I need help with is figuring out which degree will let me finish FASTEST according to the credits I already have.  I'm leaning towards either Marketing, Human Resources, or Business Management.  I have career knowledge in each of these fields, so any of the 3 would suffice.

Also, what can I take at Study.com to knock out some classes before enrolling?

  SDC calculate points
Posted by: homeschoolmom1 - 07-05-2024, 08:13 AM - Forum: Saylor.org, Straighterline, Study.com, Sophia.Org, Coursera Discussion - Replies (3)

Can someone explain to me how to calculate the points in the SDC English Composition II course?

The quizzes count for 10% of the grade, assignments 70% and exam 20%. Our son got 99/100 on the quizzes and 78 on the exam. There are 6 assignments, but they are not all weighed the same (some have a maximum of 15 points and some 25). He has not submitted any of the assignments yet.

How many points does he have right now, without the assignments? Is it correct that he needs 210 to pass, just like with the courses without assignments?

Clearly, I have a mental block when it comes to percentage calculations. Maybe I should take Liberal Arts Math again Wink

You're a guinea pig? HW MBA, PG Cert, DBA!
Posted by: bjcheung77 - 07-05-2024, 03:01 AM - Forum: Graduate School Discussion - Replies (3)

So, here's the funny, if you've got the money...it's an alright or decent combo program, and here's the brief or quick low down...

Oops... I'm retyping all of this, for some reason, it didn't save my previous work!!  Anyways, HW MBA and DBA have been talked about on both the sister board and here.  They offer a 9 course MBA by exam and it can be done in a year or shorter, it's entirely online, non proctored, open book exams, plus you can use the internet (yes, you read that correctly)... Cost was about $10K USD, now it's $14.5K USD, if you pay all upfront, you get a discount of 20% and that becomes $11.6K USD for this mid-tier UK MBA.  Link: https://www.hw.ac.uk/online/postgraduate...ration.htm

PG Cert Research Methods (it's actually the DBA 'course stage') but they offer this to any student, obviously, if you're going to continue and finish the DBA, you'll need the Masters and any other prerequisites completed. Think of this as a Level 8 UK diploma but more expensive. This can be a stand alone option or the first stage of the DBA, the final or second stage is the DBA 'research' stage.  If you can finish all 3 in 3 sessions setting within the same term, you don't need an entire year. The cost for this PG Cert is roughly $4,750 USD.  Not on-campus, it's online... Link: https://www.hw.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/...gramme.htm

DBA 'research stage' is the final hurdle to this DBA, it mentions 3 years for the research stage, but if you put in a case that you did the MBA and PG Cert, plus your personal 'research', you may be able to finish this in 2 years for $11,050 USD/year, total would be $22,100 to finish the program off. I would look into this area the most as it will vary for each student. Link: https://www.hw.ac.uk/study/research/busi...ba-phd.htm

So, who has the cash flow to be the guinea pig?! Grand total would be, 14.5+4.75+22.1 = $41,350 USD for all three combined, and it would take you roughly 3 years to get all three done if you're somewhat speedy.  Oh, here's the link for the exams for distance learning and for online Canvas option, again, open book exams, even for the 3 PG Cert Research Methods classes, https://www.hw.ac.uk/ebs/study/online/examinations.htm

List of Lingering Questions (BSBA Journey)
Posted by: SlowReader - 07-04-2024, 06:25 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (6)

Hello all,

First, thank you all for the priceless help in demystifying and taming this beast called higher learning. It can be overwhelming after all these years of life at full speed, to suddenly stop and make time for this.

MY DETAILS
Location: TX, US
Age: 46
Degree: (seeking) Bachelors in Business
Credits: TTU 9 Credits: ENG 1301, FR 1507, Jazz Ensemble
CLEP 6 Credits: Spanish I & II
GPA: 3.4
No Military
Priorities: Efficiency/speed from a widely recognized uni is my priority. Secondary is budget. Hoping to stay under $10K, but willing to consider spending for speed & quality.
Commitments: I can focus on study, but have other projects. Ideally looking to study 4 hours per weekday and 4-8 on weekends.
Timeline: 6 mo or less ideally
Caveat: If I find a decent full-time job, commitments/time may shift suddenly
Goal: SaaS Senior Management position - also eventually business ownership
Additional Details: I have a ton of experience, and am finding (once again) that my experience doesn't mean much without a sheepskin. I owned/operated a graphic design/photography business for over ten years, then worked up to 3 years SaaS Sales Leadership at a corporation, then got a team lead position at a SaaS company (2 years). I have (outdated) experience with HTML, CSS, PHP4, MySQL, and some Javascript.

My passions are business strategy, developing/refining processes, building strong cultures, running teams, and helping people advance their careers. I prefer tech/SaaS and prefer leading teams (including but not limited to sales) over programming. Therefore, I think the path for me is a Bachelor of Science In Business Administration (BSBA), but am requesting experienced suggestions from you. I love project management, but PM's seem to average $80K (according to the Uni sites), whereas I was making $95K - $160K over the past 6 years and am pursuing a degree in order to match or increase that.

LINGERING QUESTIONS:
1) Based on the decision table, I made my own table to eliminate some noise (as a US citizen, eliminated English/Int'l info as well as schools I'm not focused on). From this, and partially through instincts, I'm leaning toward Western Governors (WGU), because their term is 6 months self-paced for a nominal fee - which gives me ample time to cram and pivot as life unfolds; whereas Excelsior and UMPI charge per 8wk term, and (I believe) TESU charges per month, which can get expensive if life gets in the way. What do you think?

2) It's been recommended here to create an ACE account for unifying/collecting credits. However, ACE doesn't seem to have a membership/login option. I've since noticed that Credly seems to be their main provider. So my question is whether creating a Credly account is what is meant in step 1 here?

3) That being said, it's also recommended to go ahead and start taking Sophia and/or getting free credits before committing to a uni. However, I fear that I'll wind up wasting time gaining credits that I don't need/will not apply toward my degree path. How can I avoid this without first choosing my uni?

4) I'm super curious about CPL (I think that's the accronym for "experience"), because I do have a ton of experience and training. However, official courses/training have been limited. What is the best way to find out if my experience is worth any credits? ACE testing?

5) PMP (Project Management Professional) seems to be a credential that is very respected in my field. CAPM is the ladder to PMP. Does anyone know if CAPM can serve as college credit - specifically towards a BSBA degree?

6) I like the idea of qualifying for certificates (e.g. AWS) that could advance my current career prospects. Is there some place to check certificate courses to be sure the course will count toward my degree before I take it? Is this possible to do before deciding on a school?

Thanks in advance!

  UMPI DILEMMA
Posted by: Talia99 - 07-04-2024, 05:11 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (4)

Hey,
so after 2 sessions at UMPI, I've taken 10 classes, which is basically enough to meet the residency requirements and finish my degree (except for visual communication and Spanish, which I'm transferring in from Sophia). Here's the thing, though. Over the weekend (June 28th and 29th), results started coming out. I already knew my grades for a few classes, but I didn't expect anything else to be released before Monday since it was the weekend. I got an email from one of my teachers on Saturday afternoon. She said that even though my grades show that I failed, I actually didn't. She put in a request to change my grade and said in the email that she simply made a mistake when inputing my grade and it should be fixed by Monday. But Monday came and went, and nothing happened. Same thing on Tuesday. So I emailed her again on Wednesday to follow up, and she said she'd talk to the registrar. But still, nothing.

I'm starting to get paranoid and think that maybe I did fail. I've been working towards this degree for years, and it's finally so close. I feel like I'm stuck in limbo. If I failed, at least I'd know for sure and could retake the class. But this waiting is killing me.

I guess I'm just venting here. I didn't tell anyone that I'm going back to school this time around. I tried university before and ended up dropping out. So I don't really have anyone to talk to about this.

Anyway, thanks for listening. If you have any advice or suggestions, I'd really appreciate it.
Again thanks

TESU BA in Computer Science, help with planning and advice
Posted by: Whiskazo - 07-04-2024, 11:35 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (8)

Your Location: Spain
Your Age: 28
What kind of degree do you want?: TESU BA in Computer Science
Current Regional Accredited Credits: N/A
Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: N/A
Budget: I estimate a cost of $6-7k in my initial planning, so I'd stick to that amount, but budget can be increased if required.
Commitments: Working full time, but no family duties.
Dedicated time to study: 3-5h of studying per day is doable, and total availability on weekends.
Timeline: I don't have any timeline stablished; I'd like to finish the degree as soon as humanly possible.
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: N/A

Hello everyone, thanks for reading my post! First of all, I'd like to clarify that I'm totally new to this whole US degrees, credits and courses universe. I've spent a few days researching and reading the forum, trying to understand as much as I could, but I still have the feeling I don't fully get the picture of how things work exactly. Not at least compared to other users here, which are absolutely pros! Because of that, I've decided to make this post, even if I still haven't studied a single course, because I am afraid I'd end up studying unnecessary courses and making a mess. Temptation to just jump into Sophia.org and start studying is huge, but I'm trying to do things right.

Below, I am providing a link to a Excel spreadsheet with what I've planned to obtain a BA in Computer Science. It likely contains some errors, because many times I was not sure at all if a course could be replaced by another one, if X electives could be taken from Y categories, if a course had a Sophia/Study equivalence or not, doubts about general education courses, etc. I followed the information in this TESU page, as well as this other one, to distribute the General Education credits (as mentioned before, many times I did not know how strict I had to be with this distribution). Furthermore, I've also used as a guide both wiki pages, "Sample TESU BA Computer Science Plan" and "Sample TESU BA Computer Science BSBA CIS Double Degree Plan".

I chose TESU after checking all the other options available. This university seems to be a perfect match. I was also exploring SNHU using their Spanish degree offerings, but unfortunately, after a long email exchange with them, they told me that in the Spanish version of SNHU they don't transfer the credits in the same way than the regular SNHU, and they would not transfer any Sophia or Study credits. Sounds strange to me, but I prefer to avoid the risk.

Link to the Excel spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...phH7yAolvA

It would be really appreciated if anyone with experience could let me know if this plan looks somehow okay. I thank you all in advance, not only for checking this out, but also for all the valuable info in the forum.

As questions, I'll probably have more, but for now:

  1. Is there any way I could optimize the RA credits to reduce the amount of TECEPs? I've read about Metropolia, but I don't see any clear information about how many RA credits could be potentially transferred to TESU. That uncertainty is why I haven't included that option.
  2. I marked this in yellow color in the Excel, but I ask again here: is it alright to take Spanish courses being a native speaker? Sounds like 'free credits without studying' to me, but maybe someone could think I should be ashamed of such trick Smile
  3. I struggled a bit to choose so many electives (30 credits) in the last section of the Excel. I just went to Study.com and Sophia.org and chose a few courses that sound interesting and look like they'll transfer, but I am honestly open to suggestions about that, because it was a bit of a random choice.
  4. I assume the steps would be to, first, grind all the courses I can, and only when they're done, apply to the university? I've also read something about 'locking the catalogue' but not sure at which stage I'd have to do that
Have an excellent day, and Happy July 4th!

Hello Everyone, I hope you're well. I wanted to reach out and see if anyone in Summer Session Two has any info on what courses Dr. Z is instructing this session? I have taken two courses from him which were great. He is not taking all the course load anymore, so I also have taken another HTY/POS with Dr. Hinson. Both are great instructors. I did POS335 and POS489- Dr.Z, then POS343- Dr. H. If anyone has taken or is enrolled in another Dr. Z course not 335 or 489 can you share with me? I'd appreciate it. P.S. I will go to anyone, but I am looking for Dr.Z specifically as I know everyone raves about him, truth is he is very connected/accessible responds to e-mails, grades quickly, provides feedback, which makes the learning journey move along.

  Free college for "Senior citizens"
Posted by: jb111 - 07-04-2024, 06:00 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

Hi.  So I'm trying to lay out education plans and my fiance says you know there are a lot of free classes at age 60.  That's 3 years away for me!  Age varies by state:
https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-...s-by-state

Some aren't free (and/or you pay for books/other fees) if trying for credit.  There seem to be some private colleges that offer discounts (much harder to search but they exist).

If there's any more info, please add to the thread.  Hope this helps with older folks' planning Smile
