How to pay for University of Helsinki course
Posted by: Avidreader - 05-28-2024, 03:53 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

I just completedthis quick course called Me and my cat on the url below. The website is kind of funky, just sign up with the same email you used for Xamk and/or if you have taken other Moocs at Helsinki. At the end of the course, you refresh the page and a link appears that redirects you back to the Helsinki university to formally register it.
The course is very fun for cat lovers and only takes an hour. You fill out a questionnaire about your cat's breed, age, personality, behavior issues and any information about when they were kittens during the socialization window. They talk about the science of cat behavior which is very basic and for all ages. Then they ask the owner to do a self assessed personality quiz and compare your traits with the average cat owner. There are 4 graded multiple choice questionnaire exercises that can be redone until you get everything right. Worth 2 university credits if you pay 30 euros, otherwise the completion certification is free.

There is also a dog course called Me and my dog. There is supposed to be an English version, it seems hidden. You'd have to do what I did with the cat course, sign up with your email and the system seems to redirect you to the English version of the course.

My question is how is the 30 Euro paid because they mention in a window a Finnish bank, but I don't think I see other payment options. Thanks!

CPA prep course + 30 hours of Accounting credit for $2,970
Posted by: freeloader - 05-28-2024, 12:40 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (7)

Franklin University and Miles CPA prep are advertising an introductory deal for their “CPA Pathway” that includes 30 hours of credits from Franklin University (RA and IACBE accredited) and the Miles CPA course for $2,970: https://www.milescpareview.com/

Miles is not very common in the US, but claims to be the biggest CPA prep course provider in India. Their CPA course by itself costs around $1,200.

The program requires completion of at least 90 credits and intermediate accounting, but recommends completion of basically an accounting bachelor’s prior to entry. Looks like there are recoded classes with optional live courses available.

The page says the courses cannot be used for a degree at Franklin University. Would be interesting to see how they might be received at TESU, UMPI, or elsewhere.

  O.P.Jindal Global University UpGrad MBA
Posted by: David1477 - 05-28-2024, 10:13 AM - Forum: Graduate School Discussion - Replies (9)

I came across this when checking their website: https://jgu.edu.in/jgbs/online-mba/

It doesn't show on UpGrad's MBA list, but they have a page for it if you search for it via Google: https://www.upgrad.com/by/mba-opj-global-university/

The price seems to be at 1.800$ for a 1 year online MBA with some live sessions on weekends. (I live in Eastern Europe, so the time difference isn't that bad)

As I understand, O.P. Jindal is a real university in India that is one of 4 private institutions deemed to be university (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institutes_of_Eminence)

I heard that India doesn't recognize online degrees in general. However, this is an Indian university offering online degrees (via Coursera as well). So, are these degrees accredited and recognized internationally? I feel like Coursera wouldn't partner with sketchy universities, but who knows...

What do you guys think about this? They offer a similar (but longer and more expensive) MBA via Coursera. Does anybody here have experience with this?

If this is a legit degree, I feel like it could be a fantastic deal. It is just weird that UpGrad doesn't show it in their MBA listing and that an Indian institution offers online degrees while not accepting online degrees inside their country.

EDIT: I found a landing page for the program as well: https://programs.jguonline.edu.in/online...kAQAvD_BwE

  Individual self-paced courses for credit
Posted by: Kjnova - 05-26-2024, 05:44 PM - Forum: General "Big 3", B&M colleges, and other colleges - Replies (11)

Hi, I am trying to complete a long-delayed degree at a major state university. I arrived on campus in 1989, passed over 120 hours (but not meeting all degree requirements), and left as a senior in good standing due to work and other life concerns at the time.

In 2011, I re-enrolled, but probably wasn't ready - I had a major work scenario unfold (a merger that ended up getting our entire 400-person division eliminated), and didn't handle it properly, so I flunked four classes.

I have been re-admitted for a third time. I am just barely above a 2.0 and on academic warning.

I need to complete a Renaissance British literature class, a World Literature class, a Rhetoric class, a Math class, and also, 5 hours (2 classes) of interdisciplinary classes, and meet a diversity requirement. Oh, I also need a one-hour physical education/fitness class.

The three English classes all need to be upper level undergraduate at my university, though they may be categorized differently at the other school.

Since I have plenty of hours and just need to meet requirements, classes can meet more than one requirement. I could theoretically finish with 13 hours, but in practice, I think I need 16 hours, or maybe 19 hours.

- Nearly any math class would do. Like "topics in contemporary math," or "introduction to statistics."
- A technical writing class might count for both Rhetoric and one of the interdisciplinary classes.
- The Renaissance Brit lit class might be hard to find anywhere except my university because it's a short list of option. No survey type classes would work. It would need to be something like Milton, or some other specific things.
- The World Lit class is a bit broader, but not by much. That might also be difficult to find an exact match.
- There are exactly five classes at my university that would count as both the second interdisciplinary class, and a diversity class. For example, "Women in Science & Technology" would count. Or, "Introduction to American Studies."

I can transfer in up to 15 hours; that is, 30 of my last 45 hours must be at my university, and so far, they all are. I must be enrolled at my university in my final term before graduation, which means I must take at least one class there.

That is the long setup for a perhaps short question ... at least shorter than the setup!

I have checked course offerings and in most cases actual summer and fall availabilities for:

- Wisconsin flex - they offer two classes I need for sure, and possibly a third depending how my interdisciplinary classes are counted
- UMPI - I can't find much there for my requirements
- WGU - they offer two classes that would work for me. They fill the same categories as the UW-Flex classes, so there isn't an advantage in doing both

The University of Florida has more options, especially in English Lit, but I am not sure how, or if, they take visiting students or what classes will actually be available, and I am not sure how self-paced their classes are.

The reason I am trying to do this is that my main university's classes may be online asynchronous, but they are not self-paced, and even the asynchronous offerings are sparse compared with scheduled online lectures, or on-campus options ... and since I am looking for specific, upper level classes for some of these, that could become a sticking point.

I have also thought about just transferring, and doing more classes somewhere else and trusting that it will still work out if I choose a school with self-paced study. That is, maybe 30 self-paced hours somewhere else will go faster than 16-18 asynchronous or (shudder) in-person classes where I am now.

I am sort of thinking out loud, don't have anybody in person who knows this world to bounce ideas off of, and hoping for some insight or suggestions. I can provide more details as needed.

Thanks!

  14-month DHSc
Posted by: sanantone - 05-26-2024, 03:06 PM - Forum: Doctorate Degree Discussion - Replies (2)

Jonathan Whatley made a comment about Faulkner University having an 18-month PhD in Health Sciences. I went to their website and saw that they also have a 14-month DHSc in Health Sciences. This is the fastest RA, non-clinical doctorate that I've seen. Hypothetically, one can complete a doctorate at Oklahoma State University in 12 months, but that is dependent upon how many transfer credits are accepted from one's master's degree and how many credits one enrolls in each semester. Okstate is on a traditional semester system whereas Faulkner has 5-week courses that are taken one at a time, so the program is structured to be completed in 14 months.

How Well Did UMPI's BA in Accounting Actually Teach You Accounting?
Posted by: AccountingForThis - 05-26-2024, 01:05 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (2)

Hello! I am strongly considering attending UMPI to earn my BA in Accounting with the goal of eventually becoming a CPA. Unfortunately, I have read some posts on this forum and others claiming that the accounting courses are not rigorous/up-to-date enough to sufficiently teach the material (at least to those of us without previous accounting experience).

For those of you who have completed this degree or are in the process of doing so, do you feel like the courses were sufficient? Do you feel like they prepared you to work in accounting? If you took the CPA exam (or any other accounting qualification exam) afterwards, do you feel like the courses gave you a decent foundation from which to review or did you end up basically having to learn everything from scratch?

UMPI would be the fastest and cheapest option in my situation, but if I have to spend considerably more time studying afterwards then I’m not sure it would be the best/most efficient…

SDC: Computer Science 105: Introduction to Operating Systems
Posted by: legenwait4itdary - 05-26-2024, 04:59 AM - Forum: Saylor.org, Straighterline, Study.com, Sophia.Org, Coursera Discussion - Replies (12)

Hello,

I am about to take this course (Computer Science 105: Introduction to Operating Systems) and I am wondering how time consuming and difficult it is. I am not worried about the quizzes as they have 3 attempts so I reckon I can get at lest 90 out of 100 towards my final grade. What worries me is the final. Has anyone taken the course recently and could share some info about it?

Thank you in advance for your help.

  Inspired by my kid sister
Posted by: BetterThisYearThanLast - 05-25-2024, 10:11 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (4)

Howdy Folks, My kid sister is on her way to her PhD this year. I couldnt be more proud. And inspired. So I'm taking another stab at school since I've got time and money to blow. Looking for some direction in my planning. Here goes the relevant:

Location: Philadelphia Age: 30

What kind of degree do you want?: I feel like “Business” is the easiest anywhere and I’m fine with that to just get it over with. If it’s a matter of personal choice, I love philosophy and world religions. The stack that makes the most sense to me (ambitiously) is Human Resources + Data Analytics but WGU seems costlier than I care to spend given my preferred timeline and cash flow (but I’d consider it since it would be the better achievement FOR ME)

Any certifications or military experience? I have Comptia Sec+ certification

but I could totally live without it if I can secure a BS in the next 6-12 months.
My ultimate goal is a Masters in 12-18 months.

Budget: I have 5k cash to blow right this minute.
Commitments: Few. I work 3 days a week and have no kids.
Dedicated time to study: about 40 hours/week
Timeline: ASAP 12-18 months
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: Nope
