Passed Human Cultural Geography and Intro To Soc.
Posted by: highlanderburial - 09-29-2007, 10:19 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

I only used Wiki to do the HCG since there was no IC module for it. I simply took the course prep pamphlet and looked up the terms on wiki. Granted I only got a 53 but I think that is still an A. You can look up my review of that subject that's buried deep in the bowels of the IC discussion board somewhere.

Intro to Soc (clep) I got a 63 with only IC! Put that on your list of courses passed with only IC!

  Statistics Defeated!
Posted by: Cade - 09-28-2007, 07:35 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

Well, maybe it is defeated; Got to love those paper and pencil tests. Actually I was glad I didn't have the pressure of a time limit. It took me about 2 1/2 hours. I think I will at least pass. My calculator (TI BA 2+) was not a concern for the administrator; she didn't look at it. The calculator makes answering some difficult questions a breeze.

Difficulty was evenly distributed for the most part; maybe a little skewed to the right. (just had to use my new stat terms.)

I am glad I took the Algebra test just before this one. It helped me with mathematical notation and reading formulas.

Speaking of formulas, I think it is a good idea to memorize at least the major formulas. I was glad I did. I didn't use them intensely on the test, but it gave me a good understanding of the mechanics. Actually some concepts didn't really stick until I memorized the formulas.

On my test:
Lots of correlation and Regression.
Null hypo stuff of course.
Empirical rule - understand this one.
Probability all over
One good but out of the way formula to know: sample size for confidence intervals

The sample question sites mentioned in the specific exam feedback area (I think) are a good representation of the actual test.

Study resources I used:
IC - you know about this one
The Complete Idiot's Statistics - Holds your hand the whole way. explains the concepts very well. Do all the practice problems.
Statistics Workbook for Dummies. - (What degrading titles, I know) This book has a lot of practice and helps the concepts stick. Highly recommended.

Overall a very doable test. Just work hard.

I took HTYH today also, but it seams every one already knows about this one. The specific exam feedback section is right on the money.

I have to thank every one on this forum for their input. If I do get a good grade you all will be partly to blame.

Good night

Cade

  accrediation lingo help
Posted by: dloth - 09-28-2007, 05:26 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

Hi again!

I am still in the learning process of understanding the accrediation lingo. Could someone help me with this, specificially I am looking at Oregon State University online.

Welcome -- Oregon State University -- Extended Campus -- Ecampus

For the degree I am working towards I need science classes with labs, all the schools I have looked at will not accept ECE exams for the sciences nor the clep bio or clep chemistry. So I am looking at this college for some of the science classes.

Is the accrediation real?

Thank you in advance for any help and suggestions...

  Calculator question
Posted by: scherrd - 09-28-2007, 04:55 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

This is not about which calculator to use but...

in preparing for the statistics DSST, I purchased the TI-30XIIS. I have been using it while going through the flash cards. When I get to the section on correlation and do the two-variable stats, the answers for a and b are swapped. So the correct answser for slope is labeled a and not b.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks
Doug

  AA to BA?
Posted by: cookderosa - 09-28-2007, 02:03 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

I am wondering if there is any real benefit to earning an AA on the road to BA?

First- in my case, I don't qualify yet for the AA because I hadn't taken science, so essentially there will be one semester difference between when I meet the requirements for an AA with when I meet the requirements for my BA- that could look odd.

Second- it's $250

Third- my first associate degree contributed zero credits toward my BA, so I am earning 120 the hard way- from scratch. This would be more obvious if I opted to include it distinctly separate from my first AOS and this BA.

Finally, which is more traditional? Do "most" people get the AA then BA or do "most" people just get the BA? Is that more common among those who went to community college first? I know some colleges don't even offer AAs.

Opinions??

  Rudman's as a study guide

Have you used any of the Rudman's to prepare for an exam. What are your thoughts on it as a supplement to IC?

  DSST Civil War and Reconstruction
Posted by: joel66 - 09-27-2007, 06:54 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (7)

I'm reading a lot of threads from Specific Exam Feedback and General Discussion about the DSST Civil War & Reconstruction. I'm currently studying the U.S. History I Sparknotes 101 and REA's CLEP History I study guides now, as well as IC and REA's practice test.

I would like to another book for DSST Civil War & Reconstruction now, so I will have them available after I complete U.S. History I.

Not sure if I need sparknotes, if I already have Sparknotes 101 and REA guides for U.S. History I and II, which covers Civil War & Reconstruction. I would like to get another book to read. I'm seeing several people mention Civil War for Dummies. I'm looking at the table of contents for that book and not seeing anything about reconstruction. Not sure if I should get Jack Rudman's Civil War & Recon. I have some concerns because somebody mentions in amazon that it has some errors. I saw the "Ordeal By Fire: The Civil War and Reconstruction" but 800 pages is a little too much. lol.

Other option, I noticed the local library has "Ordeal by Fire" but I think it's like the first edition because it's dated 1982. It says 694 pages. the ISBN is 0394312066. What's the difference between the order edition of "Ordeal by Fire?" Even if I want to buy the book, I'm seeing the order edition selling like mad for under 5 dollars.

  I'm done!
Posted by: Katterina - 09-27-2007, 05:36 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (20)

I finished the my last exam today, which completes my BSL at Excelsior College. It is finally done! I am now the first in my immediate family to complete a 4-year degree. It is a dream come true, something I hardly thought possible for myself two years ago. I never could have finished 56 credits in as little as a year without IC and this forum (seriously, it took me six years to complete my AA!) I would not have been brave enough to try testing out of my degree without the encouragement and many success stories I found here. Thank you, thank you, thank you IC for showing me the way!
