CLEP - The Educational Dilemma
Posted by: dseiler - 03-23-2007, 03:08 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (6)

I am working towards a BA in English with Secondary Education as my primary goal. The CLEP seems a great way to get some of those core courses out of the way but it got me thinking.

1. Will I be able to follow another psych class (for example) if I CLEP'd out of Intro to Psych? My next class or clep would be Educational Psychology.

2. Does anyone think they may would have been better off in the long run if they shelled out the money to take the class? I am concerned I might be missing some key elements especially where psyche and education classes are concerned.

Maybe I am just looking to hard into it. Anyway, I am curious what you all think.

  Taking my clep exams today
Posted by: Inteljustice - 03-23-2007, 09:26 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

I'm scheduled to take intro psych and principles of management. I've studied hard for the intro psych exam, principles of management I've only studied for a little bit, but I've heard a lot of that exam is common sense stuff. My anxiety level is pretty high, since these are my first clep exams, I don't have a clue what to expect.
Wish me luck

  Instantcert vs Clep books
Posted by: grad-one-day - 03-22-2007, 08:53 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (5)

I am looking at Instantcert to study for the D&A Abuse. Is Instantcert better than the REA's clep books for clep test? I was not impressed with the clep books and the test I took asked very little questions on the material I studied. I have just heard about Instantcert and am curious whether or not it is worth the $20 a month to purchase. Is Instancert all you need to pass the test? Any advice? Thanks

May I hear from someone who has taken either one or both of these tests? What did you use to prepare? How well did you do? What would you recommend?
Many thanks-

Newbie - Can I pass the CLEPs?
Posted by: dseiler - 03-22-2007, 01:27 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (10)

I've got a pretty good handle on the English Comp with Essay and the Analyzing Lit exams. I've armed myself with InstantCert and some other study materials.

Now here's the big question: Can you pass the CLEP just by studying (with no prior knowledge of the subject)? I'd like to hit the Western Civ I and II and the Intro to Psych exams. I am an adult learner and really need to maximize my credits.

Thanks for your advice!!

Does anyone's college list CLEP credit with a letter grade?
Posted by: kelsey07 - 03-22-2007, 08:30 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

I know very few do, but is anyone aware of one that does? I'm trying to find a junior college that does this so I could transfer credit over to my college. I realize there probably is a min. amount of credit you have to complete to have the credit listed, but I can do a distance course or something. I appreciate your help

Edit: Does anyone know if I can attend Excelsior even if I won't complete my degree there?

Thanks, Kelsey

  Expedited CLEP Results
Posted by: onlinelearner - 03-22-2007, 02:49 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

Does anybody know if there is a way to expedite the process of CLEP sending its reports to the receiving schools? I know that for DSST it is possible for the scores to be "rushed." I think it takes about 2 weeks for Excelsior to receive the score report from CLEP. I would like to know since I'm scheduled to take CLEP College Algebra (my final requirement prior to degree completion, yey!) and I'd like Excelsior to receive the results the soonest possible time so I can make it in time for their next degree conferral.

Also, does anyone know if EC accepts the unofficial score report we get from the test center or maybe a verbal confirmation from CLEP that the student passed the exam? Highly unlikely, but I guess it never hurts to ask Smile

Thanks in advance!

  Starting to get nervous!!!!
Posted by: berniejr - 03-21-2007, 10:51 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

Well I'm down to my last 2 test, I have about 3 weeks to prepare and pass 2 more Dantes test for my Bachelors degree at Governors State University. The 2 I've decided to take are Civil War and Reconstruction and Rise and Fall of the USSR. I have very little knowledge on these subjects, and I'm starting to panic that they may be over my head. Using IC and Wikipedia, is it reasonable to think that if I dedicate 1 hour per day that I will have given myself sufficient time to pass these test? I squeaked by on Drug and Alcohol Use with only IC and about 3 days of study using IC only, but I get the feeling I got really lucky. Have I not given myself enough time to handle these 2 test? What do you guys think?

  Completed all requirements for degree
Posted by: BGN - 03-21-2007, 09:32 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

I received an e-mail yesterday from Charter Oak State College that my Academic Autobiography has been approved. This completes all requirements for my bachelor's of science degree;I will graduate in May.

Instantcert was a tremendous help in completing my degree plan. Listed below are the Clep and Dantes tests I completed with their corresponding score and credits earned. Also listed is study materials used for each exam.

1. Humanities 62- 6 credit Instantcert and REA Study Guide 11/05
2. Social Science and History 64- 6 credit Instantcert and REA 12/05
3. English Comp w/Essay 51- 6 credit English Grammer for Dummies,REA 02/06
4. Natural Sciences 60- 6 credit REA Study Guide 03/06
5.Analyzing and Interpeting Lit. 61- 6credit REA Subject Book 04/06
6. American Goverment 60- 3 credit CliffNotes 05/06
7.Principles of Management 61-3 credit REA Subject Book 05/06
8.Principles of Public Speaking 61- 3 credit used a book I picked up at Border's for $10.00, and internet sites like Toastmaster's. 06/06
9. Intro to World Religions 73- 3 credit Instantcert, book from Border's 06/06
10. Ethics in America 78- 3 credit Instantcert only 07/06
11. History of the United States I, 66- 3 credit CliffsNotes, Instantcert 07/06
12. Foundations of Education 67- 3 credit Instantcert only
13. Intro Sociology 65- 3 credit REA Subject Book 08/06
14.Intro Psychology 70- 3 credit CliffsNotes 09/06
15.Intro to Ed. Psychology 64- 3 credit Instantcert,GRE psych. book 10/06
16. History of United States II, 67- 3 credit CliffsNotes,Instantcert 10/06
17. Here's to Your Health 66- 3 credit Instantcert only 10/06
18. Accounting 50- 6 credit picked up a book at Border's about $15.00. 11/06
19. College Math 56- 6 credit REA,multitude of other books,time 11/06

Also completed the 1 credit Computer Literacy course now required.

All told 79 credits in just under a year (barely). Certainly not a rarity on this board. There are many who have completed far more test in a shorter period of time than I. So if you are hesitating, and procrastinating out of fear, don't.

In case you're wondering I had accumulated 41.7 credits prior to matriculating with Charter Oak. Of these 36 were upper level in my concentration,so I only needed to earn lower level credit to complete my degree.
