Hey all!

How are you? ...Well, lets see I plan on taking this exam on Wednesday, and I looked up as many threads that pertained to this exam and could not find much. Does anyone have any tips on the test? I have been studying IC for almost a week now...like does anyone remember any particular areas or questions that caught them off guard? Thanks for all your help!

I thought I was closer to 30 credits to finish...but unfortunately I have about 52 credits to fulfill. I am going for Liberal Studies in BS. I have not yet enrolled and was thinking about doing option 2...any advice? Option 1 = obligated to take 3 classes with Excelsior or Option 2 = paying a fee of 875$...is that a one time thing, and can you pay later? -OR- Do you have to pay right when you enroll? I am not sure if I want to major in Psychology or not...I want to get this done in less than a year...I just want a Bachelor's because I want to hurry and start my Master's right after...any advice would help! Thanks!!!

For those that may have seen my previous posts, I recently took the CLEP College Mathematics test as my first test having not studied the subject for about 25 years. I gave myself approximately 2 weeks to prepare for this test while simultaneously preparing for the Principles of Marketing, working 40 hours a week, commuting 10 hours a week and trying to maintain a normal family life. I passed both tests, the Math with a 64 and the Marketing with a 71. I found this forum to be an invaluable aid and in an effort to pay back the forum I wanted to share my approach on the off chance that it helps even one other person preparing for the same test. I gained a lot of insight and confidence from the forum before taking the test and I hope this post helps others in some small way.

With the limited amount of time I had given myself it was important that I ensured that I concentrated on the correct areas of study. This for me was a two step approach, I started by doing a couple of practice tests to determine my stronger and weaker areas and then analyzing the exam content as presented in the CLEP guide. I found that I was stronger in the areas of Sets, Logic, Real Number Systems and Probability and Statistics which corresponded to 65% of the exam content. So this is the area I concentrated on.

My reasoning was quite simple. I had a pretty good handle on these areas and the test was a pass/fail so it didn’t really matter by how much I passed, just as long as I did. The effort required to strengthen my strengths was going to be a lot less than that required to strengthen my weaknesses especially as I’d be almost be starting from scratch in those areas.

The goal was to ensure that I could confidently answer
5/6 questions in Sets
5/6 questions in Logic
10/12 questions in Real Number Systems
13/15 questions in Probability and Statistics

That in itself would give me a pass but without much of a buffer. I did expect that the other two areas; Functions and their Graphs and Additional Topics would contain at least one “gimme” each and I was hoping that of the remaining questions I could successfully guess at least 3.

Now this may seem like a dangerous approach especially considering the number of questions in each area is an approximation and can change from test to test but the goals set for my strength areas were the minimums I was expecting while the goals I set for my weaker areas were the maximums I was expecting. In reality I was expecting 6/6 for sets but allowing for 5/6 to account for “exam stupidity” on my part (misreading questions etc). And I can say the same for my other strength areas so I was feeling quite confident in passing the test.

What I found was that to get to the point where I was confident in my strengths didn’t take as long as I thought it would which did allow me to spend at least some time on my weaknesses which didn’t hurt my confidence or the final result.

When it came to the test itself I answered my strength questions as I came to them, answered my weak questions if I knew the answer almost immediately and guessed the questions I didn’t know but also marked them so that with time permitting I could go back at the end of the test and put some more thought into them.

It took about 45 minutes to complete the test and I felt pretty confident when I was finished. Without knowing exactly how the rated scores work I can only assume that I answered somewhere between 40 and 50 questions correctly to receive a score of 64.

This approach may not work for everyone but it did allow me to enter the exam without anxiety as I never even contemplated failing. My final score wasn’t great but I did achieve what I had set out to do.

I'm taking the first half of history. I've never used IC before but I'm excited to try. I tried CLEPing out of English once and failed by four points. It's very important that I pass this one for my own confidence and also because I live so far to commute from the college that I could save my parents so much gas money. I'm really at a loss of where to start studying though and I'm having trouble finding good books to read. Does anyone have any suggestions? I also would like to know what is most important to focus on . . . Thanks for your help.

I need some input. I need 6 Social Sciences credits. I already have Intro to Sociology from previous credits so that's out. I've read the Psych is a good exam to take and have scheduled a test date. Is this the best exam to take? I have to admit that my initial take on studying is that it seems like a lot to retain since I have very little prior knowledge. Any other suggestions for my other 3? or in place of Psych? Thanks.

I am torn on what I should do.... I have one cass left to finish out my BS in Liberal Studies via Excelsior. I was planning on taking Social Psych but it would be self study (no great IC Study Guide ) and recent people have cleared a "C". I am teetering on honors and want an upper level I can get a good score on. I have yet to take either Civil War or Soviet Union history tests for the simple fact I have zero interest in either of them, to study them is pure misery. Anyone out there have any advice? I know I previously posted I don't care about the honors, but after all this work, why not go for it? Your help, as always, is appreciated. Thanks, Lee

I just passed my CLEP Computer Information test yesterday. InstantCert was very helpful!!!
For all of you studying, make sure, you have a look at the Management Information Systems too. I was suprised that there were a lot of questions to MIS and DSS.

Hello everyone and Happy New Year!:

I am sitting for Environment and Humanity next week-January 20th. If all goes well this will be my final DANTES exam and the Excelsior math/science portion of my degree will be completed. I looked at some previous threads in regards to the exam which were very helpful. I also want to publicly thank ShotoJuku for letting me know about the "Pass your Class" materials.

For my final push, I am relying on the study guides I developed from the other threads as well as IC and passyourclass. Has anybody taken a recent version of the exam that had any questions on prehistoric man? I really have not looked at this too much, and do not want to waste time if there is a chance it will not be on the exam. Also, does anybody have a link to a quick,concise breakdown of prehistoric man that I could study?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Finally, this site has made studying SO much easier,it provides information and support that cannot be found elsewhere!
