math requirement |

Can anyone tell me if Dantes Business Math will satisfy Excelsior's math requirement for a BS/BA psychology? I know I'll have to do statistics but it would be great if I could skip clep college math 'cause I'd have to do some serious studying or maybe even take a class to help me. Business math is very easy (at least for someone with an accounting background).

DANTES - Test Series Designators - SF/SG/SE/SH? |

The EC Bus Degree Catalog has test series designators (i.e. SF/SG/SE 5##) associated with the DANTES exams listed on pages 39 and 40. I sat for three DANTES exams this past week - Principles of Supervision, Ethics in America, and Intro to Computing, but I don't recall the designators on the answer sheets. I think Principles of Supervision had an SH designator, but I'm not sure and it is not one that is referenced on pgs 39 or 40 of ,the EC Bus Cat.
Has anyone not been awarded credit for a DANTES exam from Excelsior because of the designator associated with the test they took? The community college where I took my exams was not too organized and I'm concerned that the exams they have on-file may be out of date.
Note - I did not discover this issue in the EC Bus Cat until after I sat for the exams.

Took Principles of Finance Exam Yesterday |

I took the DSST Principles of Finance exam yesterday. I don't have too much to add to what others have already posted about this exam. It was the most difficult exam I have taken but that's mostly because I am not good at memorizing and applying formulas.
After filling out the paperwork I spent approx. 2 hours on the 88 question exam. I used the TI-30Xa calculator and it was able to do everything I needed.
The number one piece of advice I can offer is to make sure you know how to calculate Present Values, Net Present Values, Future Values and Annuities very, very well (with a calculator and from tables). Studying only IC will only get you about half way through this exam. You absolutely must study from other sources to have a chance at passing this exam (see links from other postings for suggested study aids).
I'll try to remember to post again when I get the results back in 3 weeks or so.

Options needed to satisfy Excelsior BST Math Comp??? |

I haven't applied for admission to Excelsior yet (don't want to spend the $900 until I have to), but am looking for some BST Math component options.
I had an unofficial Excelsior College transcript evaluation performed last June and I still need 5 credits to satisfy the BST Math component. I have already earned 7: 2 in Algebra (Nuke School), 2 in Trig (Nuke School) & 3 in Statistics (SNHU).
My local community college offers a 5sh Calculus course, but it requires prereq's, i.e. Pre-Calc Algebra & Plane Trig or a satisfactory score on the placement test. And I don't know if EC will award 1 for 1 on the credits.
Are there any tests excluding Statistics, College Alg., Pre-Calc, and Calculus, that Excelsior awards credit for being in the category of college level Alg or above??? If I study for and pass the CLEP Calc exam, I'll still be 2 credits shy.
What about any on-line course recommendations that would fill the void?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

HRM Saturday Morning! |

Hey everbody,
I joined InstantCert a couple of months ago and have enjoyed the forum, and the study guides a great deal. My girlfriend and I are planning on taking the HRM DSST this Saturday, after about 12-15 hours of study (including tomorrow afternoon). Any last minutes tips for this one?
And my main question(s): I know InstantCert doesn't have study material for TCEP's, but does anyone here have any experience with them? I've got to take several in the near future (so does my girlfriend), and we were just curious how they compared with some of the CLEP's and/or Dante's.
TIA!
David

This test is not as scary as I thought it would be. I scored a 69. I do have to admit that Algebra was my favorite subject in high school when I took it for 2 years over 30 years ago. For studying I used the REA College Algebra book, the Peterson's tests, and the CLEP practice test. I Googled logarithms to remind myself of the basics. For once, the Peterson's tests were too easy. The REA tests were harder than they needed to be to pass. Know how to work almost all the questions. I believe if you know how to do the basics (how to add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomial fractions), you will pass. For me, time was my enemy. There were 57 questions in 90 minutes. It's very easy to get caught up in one problem. If you can't get it after a reasonable amount of time, like 2 minutes, make an educated guess, mark it, and move on to the next. Don't let it freak you out if you get 2 of these in a row. I had to practice working the problems much quicker than I originally was able. I used the Peterson's tests and the REA book which had 6 tests. I took each one at least 2 to 3 times. The first time I just worked the problems and learned from my mistakes. The second time I practiced doing them quickly. I learned how to write the problem on my scrap paper with hardly looking at it. This speeded things up considerably. Pattern recognition is important, like âa squaredâ minus âb squaredâ and it's factoring. Know the formula for a line. Know which is the slope and which is the y-intercept. Know what a line would look like on a graph if using x, x squared, x to a power, or y squared. Know how to figure compounded interest. Know when to multiply a power to a power and when the powers get added. Know about âiâ and âi squaredâ. The biggest thing working against you in this test is time, pace yourself well.
