125 free non credit courses in Spanish
Posted by: Avidreader - 09-28-2024, 10:27 AM - Forum: Free Courses and Certificates and Good Deals - No Replies

The Carlos Slim Foundation has a website called Capacítate para el empleo, which offers 125 free online courses that will issue an achievement once you complete them. They have no college degree value and are self paced.

Topics are wide such as gardening, being a dishwasher or waiter, along with tons of tech degree related subjects such as IT cabling and web development which could serve as a useful refresher course. They also have a Mexican Sign Language course.

They have some diplomados without university accreditation in tech subjects like web development or Big Data, Fullstack and some environmental and health ones too.

  WGU MSCS and MSSWE

According to someone on Reddit, WGU is designing an AI degree program. That's not hard to believe and, at this point, we'll probably see degrees in everything before WGU finishes that master's in computer science.

  TESU Biology Bachelor
Posted by: kakasahib - 09-27-2024, 07:42 PM - Forum: TESU - Thomas Edison State University Discussion - Replies (1)

Hello Everyone.
Need some advice who has completed TESU Biology major. My kid she wanted to quickly finish the TESU Biology degree to apply for admission in MD (MBBS) in Guyana. SHe has about 112 Sophia Credits, about 40 Credits from CUNY with biology and chemistry. But traditional college is taking too long and Guyana only need basic Biology Bachelor degree for MBBS (MD) program. Any suggestion that what and where to look for Bio major in TESU?
I am NJ resident for 3 decades so i see no issue with in-state fee. Thanks

Sophia Credits Question and updated plan
Posted by: MCMDF79 - 09-27-2024, 06:40 PM - Forum: Saylor.org, Straighterline, Study.com, Sophia.Org, Coursera Discussion - Replies (10)

Hello everyone!
I applied to UMPI and just got my acceptance email to begin during Fall session 2
Can anyone share the maximum amount of credits they have achieved in one month through SOphia? (I started Sept 16th and have 2 courses finished so far)
I am not sure I will be able to get to the 90 credits through Sophia before the Fall session begins.
Also, if I defer my acceptance to begin in Spring, will UMPI still review my transcripts so I know what i'm doing, and what electives I can take to fulfill their requirements?

I am currently taking Bio lab and visual communications. I believe I will need to take intro to ethics to complete all the Gen EDs,  and a bunch of electives to get to 90 credits or more.
Here is what I have so far, updated courses in red

Posted by: FeFe_Fiona - 09-27-2024, 05:12 PM - Forum: Associates Degrees Discussion - Replies (10)

Long time lurker and since this forum have been so helpful I thought I would post some information I think would be beneficial to those looking to get their AAS BOG from Pierpont. Below is the time line for my partner, friend and mother.

Friend's timeline : She lives in the states. Her credits are coming from ASU, 2 other RA schools and Sophia. *She didn't understand fully when the information was given to her. She thought she needed ASU in addition to the credit she already have.

8/10/2024: Transcript sent via Credly for Sophia, Parchment and through other school that uses Blockchain

9/12/2024 : Also sent Credly transcript to the esprocessing email
9/13/2024: Sophia credits and 1 RA school credits were processed.
9/19/2024: Though she's missing a few credits she submitted her application for graduation hoping they will process the rest of her credits soon
9/20/2024: Sent ASU via Parchment
9/27/2024: ASU credit processed
**** Still missing Blockchain credit****
**Nothing is showing in student account as far as the fee or her application for graduation, she did go ahead an pre-pay the $350 fee hoping that once they invoice her it will zero out.**

Partner's time line: Partner is international, did Sophia and ASU.

8/18/2024: Attempted to apply ... Even after verifying identity there was some issues with him getting back on to do the application
8/19/2024: Started ASU CIS194 class
8/25/2024: Application finally submitted
8/26/2024: Username email
8/26/2024: Temp password email received
8/28/2024: Email about next steps and where/how to send transcript
8/28/2024: Transcript sent to processing@pierpont.edu (this was the email indicated in the email sent to him.)
9/11/2024: ASU written assignment graded , did course submission
9/17/2024: Sophia credit processed and showed up in ROAR
9/17/2024: Reached out to ASU tech support via chat... no "add to transcript button" and case was escalated
9/18/2024: ASU support updated and said they are working on it but to keep an eye out to for the button to show up in dashboard. Later that day it did show up. However was not able to order transcript.
9/20/2024: Class and credit showed up on "unofficial transcript"
9/20/2024: Ordered Transcript via Parchment
9/23/2024: Check ROAR multiple times during the day but finally around  8:55 pm EST it showed credit from ASU was processed

****Will process payment later today****

Mother's timeline:

9/7/2024: Applied to Pierpont
9/10/2024: Application received email
9/12/2024: ASU CIS 194 started
9/13/2024: What to do after applying email but no log in information
9/13/2024: Reached out via email to Pierpont tech support requesting information for student portal.
9/17/2024: ASU written assignment graded, submitted course completion module
9/19/2024: Sent Sophia credits to esprocessing@pierpont.com
9/23/2024: Credit processed and showed up in ROAR
9/26/2024: ASU add to transcript button showed up. Took a few hours before it showed up on the unofficial transcript
9/26/2024: Ordered ASU transcript via Parchment
9/27/2024: Though missing 1 RA credit, mother submitted the graduation application

*** Thinking to prepay for her graduation as well*** if others have done so, would love to hear your feedback

Key take aways

  •  I'd say for certain that sending transcripts via esprocessing is much faster as others have mentioned
  • Any school sending transcript via Blockchain, there might be some delay. I'm not sure why but my niece is also having this issue where Blockchain transcripts are taking longer than the normal methods.
  • When first applying to Pierpont it seems some individuals receive their log in information automatically while others have to reach out to tech support for assistance
  • As mentioned by others don't keep sending emails... They are busy so chances of getting a response after submitting graduation application isn't guaranteed
  • Honestly not sure if my friend prepaying the fee is the wisest thing to do. Keeping fingers crossed that something shows up on by Mon/Tue for her.
Good luck to all and thank you to those who've taken their times to post their experiences and assisted others along the way.

Question Picking CS or SWE degree, have previous BA in humanities
Posted by: naet - 09-27-2024, 03:20 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (1)

Hi everyone, first post on this forum.  Seems like a great community!  Appologies for the long post but I saw comments on other posts asking people to provide more details so I went ahead and provided a lot of detail.

Objective: I'd like to earn a degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering, or a closely related subject.  Open to a BS, BA, or maybe even a Masters if I can qualify for a masters with my undergrad degree, but not holding out for that.  Could optionally persue a masters in the future after an undergrad degree if that's something that still interests me after the undergrad.

I'd love some help looking at options for schools and programs.  Currently looking at WGU or TESU as possibilities, but open to any other programs.  I'd like something that has a good reputation in the industry if possible but open to whatever.  Briefly considered Harvard Extension but there are a couple reasons why that isn't the best.

I already have a degree in an unrelated field so hoping to apply some transfer credit from that, although it will have been over ten years since I took most of those classes by now so some schools might not accept it.

Background info: I am a current software engineer/web developer (5 years experience), with an unrelated BA in English Literature. I'm seeking a CS degree because some job applications list that as a strict requirement, and the market is a little tough right now, but I am happily employed.

I had some external circumstances that basically lead me to fail a bunch of my undergrad
classes and withdraw from the school before returning to finish my degree, so my transcript has a bunch of fails and a really bad GPA.  I was initially interested in going for the OMSCS from Georgia institute of tech, but my low GPA and unrelated undergrad degree probably disqualify me.  Maybe after earning a CS undergrad degree I might consider that in the future as a next step, but I'm going one step at a time for now.

Despite the really low GPA, I consider myself a generally good student and quick learner.  I worked for some years as a Substitute Teacher so I learned a lot about how to best learn and study.  I also have professional experience and self study in the field of software development which should make it a lot easier to keep up with coursework.

Your Location: California, USA

Your Age: 30+
What kind of degree do you want?: Computer Science or Software Engineering, BS or BA, or Masters if I can qualify with my existing unrelated/humanities degree (English Lit).

AP Statistics (4 units transfer credit) 5
AP Physics C (4 units transfer credit) 4

AP Japanese (8 units transfer credit) 3

As noted above, I also failed and/or withdrew from a bunch of classes at the time and didn’t list them all here. This was mostly due to some rough external circumstances and not necessarily a reflection on my ability as a student (imo), but because of that my GPA is absolutely awful and there are a bunch of fails listed on my transcript for various other courses that I didn't include here.

Any certifications or military experience?: no
Budget: Employer will pay $5k/year, willing to put maybe another $5k to 10k per year out of my pocket
Commitments: Full time job, wife, one kid
Dedicated time to study: 2-3 hours per weekday plus maybe 10 hours per weekend.
Timeline: Open timeline since I am already employed. Would love to start this calendar year so I can use some of this year's credit (but I would have to finish at least one course before Jan next year)
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: $5,200/year reimbursement from current employer. Applies to any accredited institution for continuous education courses or books, and possibly some tests as well

Thanks so much if you read all this and have any recommendations.  I'm also happy to share any info I can about my experience as a professional software engineer or web developer to anyone aspiring to join the field.

Free Community College for MA Residents

Requirements for Free Community College MA

I haven't seen a post here about this topic yet but this year,  MA recently expanded free community college for ALL MA residents (who don't have their bachelors),  regardless of age.

Last year community college was made free for all MA residents aged 25+ but now it seems that it has been expanded for all MA residents of ANY age and ANY income.

This has even been expanded for undocumented MA Residents!

If one was super serious about being debt-free, they could potentially move to MA, live and work here for a year to get residency, and get their associate's degree for free (they will pay for 2 associate's degrees for anyone without a bachelor's, as per the requirements).

I, unfortunately, do not qualify for this grant, as I already have my BS and MS. But I filled out the FAFSA anyway and the local community college confirmed that I don't qualify (I had to try!). Although disappointed, I'm still super happy for my all my adult friends who are going back to college for FREEEE!!!!

MA Maintains its Place as the #1 Educated State in the US!

Help I need a degree plan
Posted by: LifelongLearner36 - 09-27-2024, 09:36 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (8)

I need a bachelors to check the box and I think a Liberal Studies degree would be the best fit for me but I am getting overwhelmed with all the class choices.  I was looking at doing a concentration of the social sciences as that interests me.  I want to do it all online.  I'd like to stick with Sophia and Study.com but open to CLEP I just don't want to make it too complicated.  So a simple degree plan for this would be ideal and I'd be willing to do something different if it keeps it simple.  I looked at the BSBA for TESU and it looks doable because all the classes are spelled out but I'd rather just get a Liberal Studies as it seems more interesting.  Thanks for any help

Your Location: Indiana
Your Age: 36
What kind of degree do you want?: Bachelors in Liberal Studies
Current Regional Accredited Credits: Some spanish, college algebra, intro to circuits
Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: None
Any certifications or military experience?: No
Commitments: I have a fulltime job and kids.
Budget: Ideally less than 10k, but flexible.
Dedicated time to study: 2 hours per day
Timeline: One year or so
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: No
