Thumbs Up UMPI PM & IS Degree. Complete Newbie
Posted by: TooNee - 07-31-2024, 07:35 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (10)

Your Location: The Bahamas
Your Age: 37
What kind of degree do you want?: UMPI BBA Project Man. & IS

Current Regional Accredited Credits: Did a few courses at a vocational school but I doubt the credits will transfer.
Can provide a copy or if you can connect me with a UMPI rep that can confirm if it's worth anything that'll be great also

School Name Total Credits: 0
Class Name, Credits, Grade

Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: 0 Literally starting over from scratch.

Provider Total Credits: 0
Class Name, Credits, Grade

Any certifications or military experience? None, not a resident.

Budget: I have a max of $3K saved up.  I'd like to go the cheapest route possible, but will consider spending more for easy and fast.

Commitments: I have 2 kids. Work a full time job and can work on my studies part time or in the evenings/weekends.
My job gets slow at times so I can squeeze in some time there as well.

Dedicated time to study: I can study as much as is needed during the night or weekends as long as my schedule is free. I estimate at least 6 hours every week.

Timeline: Finishing the courses required for the degree as fast as possible would be ideal.  I would like to finish within 6/9 months max.
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: No financial assistance available to me.

This is all new to me, I've been reading through the forum for a few days trying to understand certain terminologies and how best to plan to attain my degree.
I chose UMPI because it is one of the few universities willing to accept international students and seemingly the most affordable as well if I am very strategic.

Currently trying to decide on the GE classes for the PM & IS degree but I am seeing a variation of reults, which is expected, I found a degree plan through youtube but the youtuber is pushing Study.com/straighline all the way.
I'd prefer to go the Sophia route as much as possible because of it's affordability.

If any of you can provide the alternative classes from the attached degree plan for SOPHIA that would be so helpful.

I welcome any and all advice on how to proceed.

One more thing, I am on the UMPI wiki page and I'm reviewing the GE requirements.
I am not quite understanding the rubric with the learning objectives. Does the 1A, 2D, 3C refer to a grade expectancy or refer to a course label?

I also visited the transfer equivalency per the UMPI site and it's offering some clarity on which course is the equal to Sophia course.

Thank you. Thank you all for your help and suggestions.
I am ready to start tomorrow with Sophia if possible. See attached sheet copied from YouTube.

UMPI Criminal Justice BA YourPace Program Completed
Posted by: slaterjack - 07-31-2024, 04:46 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (13)

Well hello all,

It has been quite the journey since I first joined here.  I actually joined in 2019, but due to some life things I couldn't dive into the scholastic world very much, but I did return in late 2022 and get serious about education.  I finished my Pierpont BOG in May of 2023 with the help of various people on this forum who I am forever grateful to and then signed up for UMPI which I started the same week I finished PP.

As of this morning I have completed all of the work and turned in my final.  I actually can't believe I'm done.  Some of you know the Capstone class for CJ at UMPI is a 100 hour field work project that consists of 7 small reflection papers, getting time logs filled out correctly, a slideshow, and of course a final paper that is about 1300ish words.

I haven't seen much about this program on here, so I just wanted to make a searchable thread for anyone who may be interested in the field and at anytime someone needs a question answered you can ask here or you can always send me a private message and I will be more than willing to give details or help out anyway possible.

Again, thank you to anyone I've ever bothered via your inbox and cheers to tackling a master's program next year after a long required break.

Metropolia UAS IT Programme changes after 31.7.2024
Posted by: cro-magnon - 07-31-2024, 11:18 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (14)

Hey guys, I got new info about the Degree Programme in Information Technology at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences available to those of us who are in EU.

The option to enrol in the old 180 ECTS programme expires today 31.7.2024 at 23:59 Finnish time. (catalogue link)
A similar 120 ECTS programme will be offered after that. The price stays the same at 579 € (catalogue link)

I made a little spreadsheet for myself to compare the differences between them.
Attaching a pdf of it for your convenience. Hope I didn't make too many mistakes.

Quick facts/explanation:

  • 68 ECTS of core courses appear to be completely unchanged from the old programme (green on spreadsheet)
  • 24 ECTS of courses appear to be equivalent between the programmes but are labelled differently (yellow)
  • 55 ECTS of courses are removed from the programme, that are otherwise not separately available in the catalogue at the moment (orange)
  • One 6 ECTS course is removed from the programme, that is also available for a fee of 50 € (purple)
  • The old programme had 27 ECTS of courses that are available separately for free. The new programme has 28 ECTS of courses that are available separately for free. The courses are different between the two programmes. (blue)

The old programme was 2/3 of the entire 240 ECTS BEng degree, while the new one is 1/2.
This may be unfortunate or fortunate, depending on your needs and circumstances.
It's a slightly inferior deal than before in terms of cost per credit if you don't intend to pursue the full degree at Metropolia. Also the 'Advanced Usage of Office Programs' will cost you an extra 50 € if you really need that specific course for whatever reason.
I'm not entirely sure about how the 'Individual study plan' thing works when you enrol as a regular degree student with them, but fewer predetermined compulsory credits may (possibly?) mean more flexibility with the degree's content overall. I hope people who already completed or are continuing their studies at Metropolia can share their experience after the programme and thoughts about the changes.

Sad Davar Academy No Longer Offering 50% Off?
Posted by: ExcellentPhoto - 07-31-2024, 10:58 AM - Forum: Saylor.org, Straighterline, Study.com, OnlineDegree.com, Sophia.Org Discussion - Replies (5)

I am looking into Davar Academy for UL credits toward my BSBA at TESU. Browsing this forum, I found that Davar supposedly offers 50% off using this coupon: https://www.davaracademy.com/half-off.html. However, when I try to use it to purchase individual classes, it doesn't work. There's also nowhere to enter it when signing up for Davar's "Business Class" membership option. Does anyone have any insight into this?

Thanks in advance,

Thanks to everyone here I am now enrolled at TAMUC
Posted by: CCRB - 07-31-2024, 10:57 AM - Forum: General "Big 3", B&M colleges, and other colleges - Replies (3)

After years of not being in school I decided to finally get things done. So after digging around, found this forum and started reading up. I think my situation was a bit unique (maybe) as I had many hours from WGU but they were over 10 years old and I was not sure what all would have transferred into any other school.

So after reading up here, and getting signed up with sophia.org I started tackling some of the electives that looked like they would transfer over to TAMUC in addition the the WGU credits and the few U of H credits. Well, they accepted over 100 hours of credits. So now I basically have a couple of core classes needed, 4 required major courses then I need to fill the rest of the 36 hour requirement and I will be done.

Now it is a waiting period for the official class start day, but I am excited and interested in seeing how fast I can get this done.

Help with mapping out my path to a BA
Posted by: Lj'slaw - 07-31-2024, 09:20 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (7)

Hi y’all, I’m LJ. Just a little backstory: I was an honor student in high school but ended up getting pregnant and had to take on the world, so I didn't get to go to college. I started a candle and skincare product line where I make enough money to take care of myself and my little one, but I know I need more. I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer, specifically in business law.
I was looking into taking classes on CLEP and Sophia with hopes of transferring 75% of the 120 credits to Texas A&M Commerce into the Competency-Based Organizational Leadership (BAAS) program.
I’ve looked into TESU programs, but it’s so much information that it’s a bit overwhelming.
I’ve studied and read the LSAT like the Bible, daydreaming of the time when I can get the opportunity to move forward. I guess my goal is to find the path of least resistance to getting my bachelor’s. I hope my goals don’t seem too out there, but I’m here to get some real-life advice, as I don’t really have anyone to talk to about these goals other than my 9-year-old, lol.
I appreciate any help, insight, and direction that you all can offer me.

Your Location: Georgia ,USA

Your Age: 28

Im open to any bachelors that I can get into law school with

Current Regional Accredited Credits: None
Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: I would like to know where to start.
Any certifications or military experience? NO

Budget: $18K saved up.  I'd like to go the cheapest route possible, but will consider spending more for easy and fast.

Commitments: I have a 9 year old and I  currently have a small business .

Dedicated time to study: I can can dedicate 5 hours per day to studies maybe a little more.

Timeline: Finishing the courses required for the degree as fast as possible would be ideal.  I would like to finish within 1-1.5 years (12-18 months)

Tuition assistance/reimbursement: No tuition assistance but would apply for financial aid if it’s an option.

Exclamation Problems with bad AI checkers
Posted by: David1477 - 07-31-2024, 03:19 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (16)

I'm currently doing an OTHM Level 7 Diploma in Accounting and Finance, and the school requires me to use plagiarismcheck.org.

I wrote my assignment without AI, but in a very neutral, descriptive, and impersonal way (which I believe is normal in academia). Since English is not my first language, I probably have more "text book style" transitions and phrases than the average native English speaker.

The school requires me to use the paid checking feature of the site to generate a plagiarism/AI report.

I got 70+% AI on all the things I wrote. I tried to rewrite it and even tried to use "humanizer" tools on the text I didn't even generate through AI... The percentage only went up, not down.

Should I really just rewrite the whole thing in a more stupid and unprofessional way in the hopes of not being flagged?

How do you guys deal with such issues? I feel like in an online environment it is difficult to prove your innocence if the school accepts only a single checker. I had 0% AI on the QuiltBot AI checker (a free tool), but the school only cares about the report from that site, which continues to cause me issues, and I didn't figure out a way to change my text in a way that doesn't get flagged as AI while still sounding somewhat academic/professional.

Talking to the school didn't help, if that's what you'd like to suggest. I already tried that several times. It feels so stupid to drop a course that's going well due to such a stupid issue, so I really hope someone here knows a possible solution or has experience with this AI checker.

How do you achieve multiple degrees?
Posted by: Ariadne - 07-30-2024, 06:26 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

I am wondering how it works when you want to get degrees in different subjects or areas. If I have my Associate's degree, can I get another one if I feel like it and how would I go about that? Does it use the same base education credits that the first one used? The same question for Bachelor's; does it depend on the school? Will one school allow you to do a second Bachelor's and do they use many of the base credits for the second or third degrees?

I'm not looking at it from the perspective of using these for work, but just for the love and joy of learning and I've been impressed by many of the members here who have many degrees. How do you do it?

Thanks! Heart
