Completed! BAS Minor in Info Systems & Project Management
Posted by: mohelena02 - 02-25-2024, 05:24 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (4)

Hi Everyone!

I am so happy to update you that my brother has just submitted his final assignment for his UMPI BAS with a minor in Info Systems and PM degree!! He is ecstatic. He does not post on this forum, but he knows about it and he is eternally grateful for this resource.

This forum has been life-changing for me and him. I could never thank enough everyone on here who has replied and helped us shape our degree plans. Truly this is an incredible positive resource on the internet, it brings me to tears to think of this community. I will try to 'pay it forward' as much as I can by posting replies to help people with their own journeys.

Info on my brother's journey:
-Like me, he had two previous attempts at community college that did not stick. We both have been on our own since we were 18 and had to work to pay for our lives, and community college never worked out.
-Started with less than 20 credits
-Started on Sophia
-Struggled with Study, ultimately spending months stuck on Study classes (life happening and loss of motivation).
-Utilized TADA to it's maximum benefits. He seriously took every course on Coursera through TADA that UMPI accepted for credits
-Got the AAS with Info Sys concentration from Pierpont

Time: 17 months, with some breaks and slow periods
Cost: 3.5k
UMPI: 1 term - 12 classes

UMPI experience: started off a bit difficult with a PM class that dragged on but was able to pick up speed and finish before the term ended.

What's next: Taking a break and considering a Master's. His partner is working through a BLS in Management plan.

  Route Planning
Posted by: KagomeH - 02-25-2024, 10:41 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (3)

Your Location: Texas, USA
Your Age: 27
What kind of degree do you want?: Finish bachelor's degree
Current Regional Accredited Credits: Roughly 128 credits
Budget: Cheaper as I pay out of pocket
Commitments: Work
Dedicated time to study: I can do 20 to 30 hours a week.
Timeline: Couple of years but I would like to be done within a year if possible.
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: No undergraduate loans I paid out of pocket for all of my credits. I make too much too qualify for grants but can qualify for student loans if needed. Employer offers $3000 yearly so not too helpful.
Schools: UMPI, ASU, WGU (not a big fan of the tests), Any to be honest

First off, I was stupid in my late teens and early 20s wanted to be a CRJ major. I went back years later and I graduate with my MLT degree in May. Now, I'm wanting to finish as soon as I can so I can focus on getting into a graduate program or take prerequisites for program. I plan on being in the hospital lab for a while but I went that path so I had a degree to make a living off of. I am really wanting something to tie into my useless CRJ credits to finish or will take the most out of my allied health credits to bridge for my MLS at least or have a bachelor's degree to contest the boards in a couple of years after finishing. I have a lot of regrets going back years later but I had no path my original time in other than getting a CRJ degree. Now, I just want some advice. Most bridges from MLT to MLS require the classes listed at at the bottom of the page.

I can use any degree to contest the boards if needed.

ENMU: 13-16* Credits (Dual Credit)
ENG 102 P English Composition 3.00
HIST 101 P Survey of Amer History to 1877 3.00

ENG 104 P English Composition & Research II 3
HIST 102 P Survey of Amer Hist since 1877
MATH 119 P College Algebra 3.00

*This course has not transferred in the past so I'm aware of it not transferring now. I usually don't count it in my total so 13 credits

CCC: 16 Credits

Into to CLS Science - 2
Hematology - 4
UA & Body Fluids - 2
Immunlogy/Serology- 2
Immunohematology- 4
Clinical Microbiology - 4
Clinical Hour Classes- 6*

(Aware clinical hour classes may not transfer but...I wanted to go ahead and list it anyways)

Former CRJ major:
Art History- 3
Correctional Systems/Practices- 3
Criminal Investigation- 3
Fundamentals of Criminal Law- 3
Crime in America- 3
Court Systems in Practices- 3

General courses needed for a ASCP MLS later on (varies by program).

General Chemistry I (with lab)
General Chemistry II (with lab)
Organic Chemistry I (with lab)
Organic Chemistry II

Science Elective (I am hoping my A&P courses fulfill this requrement)

Any certifications or military experience? N/A

Edit: (I forgot to add my goals....I just want some general advice.)

Hey there everyone, long time lurker and first-time poster here.

I'm enrolled and ready to go for the next term. I'm hoping to finish up 30 credits in 8 weeks. I finished 73 Sophia credits in 1 month so I don't think it's too much of a stretch for me.

I have to graduate with an excellent GPA - which brings me to my point. Are there any other students (especially Hist/PoliSci majors, or anyone who will be pursuing a JD after undergrad) starting on 3/11 who are trying to work through classes in one session? I'd like to start a mini study group, pass notes back and forth, have an accountability system, or whatever would be helpful. Basically just don't want to feel alone through all of this.

Please feel free to reply to this thread or message me privately if you're interested!!

Tired of being bad at math and looking to enroll in online math classes for credit
Posted by: xor - 02-24-2024, 04:48 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (13)

Location: United States
Age: 30s
What kind of degree do you want?: Certificate or simply taking the classes for credit so I have a transcript I can use to apply elsewhere to fulfill the prerequisites for entry to another master's program
Current degrees: Bachelor of Science in Biology / Psychology, Master of Science in Computer Science (in progress)
Budget: Ideally <= $850 a class

To be honest, I'm just tired of being bad at math. The highest level of math I've taken is Calculus 1 back in college, but I received a D. Since no more math classes were needed for my degree, I've managed to avoid math until now.

I've identified the following math classes as the ones I want to take based on what others who have a computer science background have taken and what is expected:

  • Calculus 1
  • Calculus 2
  • Calculus 3
  • Probability & statistics
  • Linear algebra
  • Discrete math
I've found ModernStates / CLEP for College Mathematics, College Algebra, and Calculus. My current plan is to do CLEP for those 3 subjects first so I have a foundation to pursue higher studies, but I'm looking for relatively cheap options for the other classes. I've looked at local community colleges and Luna Community College, but they don't seem to go beyond calculus 1.

The current options I've found (using linear algebra as an example) are:
  • UC San Diego Extended Studies ($835)
  • Wescott Courses / UMass Global ($569)
  • University of Illinois NetMath ($1248)
  • Coastline College
  • UMass Amherst ($1800)
Right now I'm leaning towards UC San Diego or Wescott Courses, but I'm reading some reviews which report the quality of the courses are pretty bad at those two. Is there a better/cheaper alternative? I'm primarily looking to learn the material and to be able to prove that I've learned the material.

Family Moves to Russia to Escape Woke LGBTQ Ideology, But It Doesn't Go Very Well
Posted by: Jonathan Whatley - 02-24-2024, 01:54 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (4)

Hitting two recurring themes on DegreeForum Off Topic: Culture wars and expat life.

The Daily Mirror Wrote:Arend and Anneesa Feenstra couldn't stand the "woke" LGBTQ ideology being thrown in their faces everywhere they went in the small, rural town in Ontario, Canada, where they were living. So, the couple packed their bags, grabbed their eight children and moved to Russia, where they hoped things would be better for them.

The couple has now come to [somewhat] regret their decision. Though Russia has some of the strictest anti-gay laws in the world, the family has encountered lots of other problems in the rural farming town in which they now reside. After selling their Canadian farm, the couple has been [initially] unable to access the money from it, as their new Russian banks have dubbed the funds "suspicious," the Daily Mail reported. To make matters worse, no one in the family speaks Russian, so they've been unable to communicate with banking authorities who don't speak English or with locals, who also don't speak their language.

The difficulties the couple has faced led Anneesa to post a video to the family's YouTube Channel, Countryside Acres, in which she ranted about the language barrier, the money issues and lots of other things she said have gone wrong since the family arrived in the Eastern European country.

But the Kremlin reportedly didn't like that. Russia is not a country that protects free speech, and government officials weren't happy with the video that shed such a negative light on their country, imploring the couple to take it down — which they did.

Anti-LGBTQ family who fled to Russia regret decision as locals don't speak English (Jeremiah Hassel, The Daily Mirror, February 24, 2024)

  Adding on associates?
Posted by: optimisticCoder3 - 02-23-2024, 08:40 AM - Forum: TESU - Thomas Edison State University Discussion - Replies (6)

I'm currently awaiting my last evaluations from TESU that should put me with just my capstone left for completing my BA in Computer Science. Once my evaluations are credited, I should also have enough to get the Associates in Computer Science. I'd like to get that as well and wondering on how the timing of that works. It is my understanding I can also add this to my degree plan somehow? Then I graduate with both?

Can anyone shed light on how this process works?

Thanks!

Brick Want a bachelor's degree in 3 years? University of Minnesota, Morris is trying...

Want a bachelor's degree in 3 years? University of Minnesota, Morris is trying to make it easier.

Quote:The accelerated studies are part of an effort to boost enrollment at the rural campus, which has seen a drop in numbers in recent years. [...]

Students participating in the rapid programs will still need to earn 120 credits, but they might do so on a tighter schedule that includes summer courses. Due to differences in how summer classes are billed, Ericksen estimated that some students could save as much as $20,000 over the course of their studies.

3-year degrees are definitely coming to more schools as they either adapt to lower costs or go out of business but jamming 120 credits into 3 years by taking summer classes is not the answer. Cutting out electives and trimming the credits down to 90-96 like BYU is doing will be the long term solution.

Information Sophia Courses to Avoid with the Pierpont BOG Degree
Posted by: Ares - 02-22-2024, 11:22 PM - Forum: Associates Degrees Discussion - Replies (24)

Pierpont does not accept the following courses for any credit:

Foundations of English Composition - Not accepted 0 Credit
Foundations of Statistics - Not accepted 0 Credit
Introduction to College Mathematics - Not accepted 0 Credit *

Does not meet General Education Requirements:

Introduction to Nutrition - Does not meet the GE Science requirement but does count for 3 credits.

* Rant: Not accepting Introduction to College Mathematics for credit at all but accepting various other Sophia courses is honestly laughable IMO. That is probably the most well rounded practical math course for most majors outside of Science, Engineering and Math. I left out technology because many technology occupations including most programming jobs do not need high level math (I also spoke to all the software developers in my company and none of them use it). For most people this course will be 2-3 times harder than many other Sophia courses and it is disappointing it does not count for any credit.

Requiring Sophia's College Algebra (AKA Algebra II in high school) which is IMO the most useless high school math course I ever took in my life is just a waste of so many people's time (for the record I enjoyed courses like Trigonometry). For Sophia's College Algebra, I laughed at all the "real world" applications they tried to present which were nothing more than math puzzles most people would never have or need to solve. There are legions of calculators and programs out there to do these things for you. For instance I know how to read a paper map and calculate my remaining distance but why bother when I have Google maps? I have not ran across something in every day life I could not measure with a practical device like a tape measure or infrared thermometer. In some cases using the recommended algebraic formula took more time then doing some simple calculations for things like unit price comparisons which I do all the time when shopping. Claiming it helps with logical problem solving is nonsense, I hired a math major once and they were one of the worst people at troubleshooting, they also constantly turned simple things into impractical problems just like this course.

For the record and despite what I have read here, if you struggle with math, Sophia's College Algebra (Algebra II) will not be easy for you and I recommend taking a second science course instead.
