I graduated last Summer with UMPI's BLS in Management and took a much needed break. I paid the UMPI tuition out-of-pocket and I can't afford to do that again. I'm now looking at Master's programs that my employer will pay $10k a year for, but there aren't many choices.
I'm trying to decide between two paths:
I have two years experience in social media marketing for a local radio station. It's fun, exciting and I get to be creative. I enjoy things like audience research and it's really satisfying to see the results of that in successful campaigns. However, this is a part-time gig and despite my experience, I have had zero luck finding full-time employment in this field. So one option that may help with this path would be a Master's in Marketing from SNHU.
I have twenty years experience in healthcare, at the same employer. My job involves direct patient care and while I'm good at it, this is something I no longer want to do. I'm considering a Master of Health Informatics offered by Purdue Global, because that field typically requires healthcare and electronic medical records experience which I have plenty of. Analytics isn't something that excites me, but I think I would have a better chance at employment with a less extreme career pivot than marketing.
From what I've read (outside of DF) opinions on both schools seem to be mixed. There are some strong negative opinions of Purdue Global not being a legitimate part of the Purdue system, re-branded Kaplan, etc. Again, I'm just looking at these two schools because they would be paid for. I want this last hurdle to result in a career change that I'm happier with and to not be a wasted effort.
This thread is intended to document my DBA journey and hopefully answer any questions or help others on the way whenever possible. I expect time will be limited because I do work full time, volunteer, have 5 children, and am caring for a sick mother at the same time.
4/2024: Spoke to admissions, signed up. Keeping an eye out for enrollment links and the CBE orientation course.
I have a BA in computer science from TESU. Have taken plenty of classes from Sophia/study.com as well as some community college.
I plan on going to UMPI to get a BA in Accounting.
How can I know which will transfer? Is there any way to transfer credits to them to see what will transfer without enrolling since I plan to take as many courses at sophia and study.com again before enrolling.?
I'm considering advancing my skills in locksmithing and was wondering if it’s possible to pursue a degree in locksmithing, or if the field only offers certification programs. Additionally, does anyone know if Thomas Edison State University offers any courses or programs specifically for locksmithing? Any guidance or information would be greatly appreciated!
I graduated last year with my degree in Computer Science from Thomas Edison University.
I have decided to go back to school and get my bachelor's in accounting. What is the best route to take. Should I go back to TESU or maybe try UMPI. Any other choices?

Budget: The budget is not an issue as much as I just want to knock this out as fast as possible. Commitments: I work part-time flexible hours. Dedicated time to study: I'd like to study 15-20 hours per week to finish the degree plan. Timeline: Ideally, I'd like to finish in 6 months, but I am willing to extend it to May 2025, as needed. Tuition assistance/reimbursement: I could apply for the FAFSA to see, but I'm not sure I'd qualify for any aid. Introduction: Hello. I started SUNY Plattsburgh for a French degree in 1989 but switched to a 3-year unaccredited religious studies program. That was a poor long-term decision, and I need an accredited degree to do the job I want. My experience is in business administration (20+ years) and translation (4+ years), and I really need a bachelor's degree to be able to apply for positions that interest me. After the Bachelor's, I'd like to continue to get a certificate of Master's in translation.
I've read many posts and watched many videos about degree hacking to get a diploma quickly. I believe I have settled on going with UMPI since they seem to offer the best chance to get credit for my 36 SUNY credits. If there is another program that would meet the main goal (Bachelor's in BA with minimal coursework and maximum credit acceptation), please feel free to let me know which one and why you are recommending it for me.
I would love to have someone look over my degree audit plan to see if it looks solid. Is it likely that my SUNY credits will transfer as detailed? Do all the extra credits that don't fit fall easily into the elective requirements? (I've attached a screenshot of my plan for evaluation).
What are the risks associated with taking classes through Sophia, Study.org, and Coursera regarding: 1. My application being refused by UMPI (what reasons are there for non-acceptance) 2. Those transfer credit outlets are no longer accepted as transfer credit by the time I make the official application to UMPI
By my plan, I would have: Do the non-UMPI credits easily transfer under one clearing house document (SUNY, Sophia, Study.com, Coursera)?
36 Transfer credits SUNY
39 Sophia credits (to take)
12 Study.com credits (to take)
3 Coursera credits (to take)
30 UMPI credits (to take)
I am really ready to start my first classes, but I would love to have my plan validated before making the leap! Thanks so much!!
I've pretty much decided to go with UMPI when the time comes to transfer my sophia.org credits, but I'm still open to other options, specifically TESU. As I'm a NJ resident, I'd get the instate rate. My question is about when they evaluate credits you intend to transfer in. I recently reached out to UMPI and they told me they let you know what credits will transfer in before you actually enroll. They also said that I can transfer in credits even after I enroll. Does TESU operate the same way?
Does anyone know if UMPI, or any university that accepts Sophia credits, looks at the score of the Sophia course before accepting the credits via transfer? I've got 20 creidts so far and all of my scores are in the 90s, except one where I got an 89%. I wonder if I got like an 80% on a course, if UMPI would reject the credits.
My younger son is a High School Junior and looking to get dual enrollment credit High School/University credit before he either goes to a traditional University program or an online program. He is going through an Aircraft Maintenance program his last 2 years of High School and will be able to get his A&P maintenance certificate. I believe he can transfer this A&P certificate for 45 credits into an Associates program. He is looking at an aviation/aeronautical engineering program.
For traditional universities, he is looking at Embry Riddle, Ohio State, Eastern New Mexico, Middle Georgia State University, and Kent State University (online program) for Aviation Maintenance. One option would be to work full time and then take an online program. Another option would be to attend school full time and get his Bachelor's degree. He is looking at the Ohio Air National Guard as they will pay 100% of tuition.
Regarding getting Sophia credit, does anyone know if Ohio University will accept Sophia.org credits? I did not see Ohio Univ listed on the partner pages so I planned on calling or emailing OU Admissions to confirm they will take Sophia. I believe they will take Straighterline and CLEP. Most of the traditional community colleges in Ohio are more expensive now being $180 or more for in state residents so we are looking for cheap credit sources like Sophia or CLEP if he doesn't make the deadline for the 2024-2025 school year through Kent State.
