Passed Sociology today: Here's a few notes ...
Posted by: Southron Boy - 02-24-2007, 12:53 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (14)

I passed the Introductory Sociology CLEP this morning with a 72 after four days of study. I was homeschooled in highschool and have never taken a class on sociology, nor had I any real experience with this subject. Just a few notes (mostly reinforcing what others have already said on this forum) for those that are thinking about taking this one:

- InstantCert is enough to pass! Make sure you can apply the principles in IC and you shouldn't have a problem. IC covered probably 75-85% of what I needed to know.

- However, I would recommend further studying in Wikipedia and some other sources for reinforcement. I also studied terms in an old encyclopedia and also made flash cards (on index cards) of terms, sociologists and their works, sociologists and their theories/identifying themes, etc. I didn't use these much for drill, but there is something said for physically writing by hand versus typing on the computer to solidify material in your mind.

- Make sure you know the major players and their works!

- Gauge your self with the free Peterson's subject exams. I have found Peterson's general exams to be inaccurate, but the subject exams were very good! I took two Petersons practice tests and received a 70 and 67, respectively. I didn't feel completely prepared before I took the real test. I knew I had holes in areas.

- Remember, they are testing your knowledge of Introductory Sociology material. They don't what you to quote several pages of Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. They are testing your familiarity with main players and your understanding and application of basic concepts.

  Just passed American Government
Posted by: kckusek - 02-23-2007, 05:12 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

Hello,
I just want to share my exitement about passing American Government.
If you plan to write it soon, make sure you know the Bill of rights and the content of these amendments.
In addition, make sure you feel comfortable with reading graphic tables. In my version of the test where about 10 of them.
I believe IC alone is not enough, but read through the CLEP pre-test from Peterson and you should get a pass.
Good luck,
kckusek

  FEMA vs UOP
Posted by: beasdon - 02-23-2007, 04:30 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

I have heard some conflicting information, so I wanted to start a new thread to see if anyone could help confirm this for me. I have a number of elective credits I need to knock out on top of a few CLEPS. With 5 classes left at UOP I am down to the wire to get everything knocked out. My counsler is telling me that UOP will not take the FEMA credits as these would be considered distance training courses.. I reworded my question to her and gave the below links but I have not heard back. My question to the forum is, Has anyone taking the FEMA courses and submitted them to UOP succesfully? I need to make a road map to get done with my degree and want to know if FEMA is an option. Please let me know anything and everthing in regards to UOP accepting FEMA credits.Cool

  Excelsior and Graded CLEPS
Posted by: soltran - 02-23-2007, 02:31 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (16)

G'day,

Has anyone heard about Excelsior changing their policy in regard to graded CLEPS?

I enrolled in December and the wife enrolled in January. She completed Principles of Management and was given a pass - two weeks later I completed Principles of management and was given an A.

The wife contacted Excelsior and they said that as of January they are no longer issuing graded results for CLEPs. We aren't sure if they meant all CLEPS or only some of them (including Principles of Management) and whether this affects those that enrolled before January or not.

So has anyone else heard anything?

Thanks

Regards

Penn Foster Tech Math 1-need advice
Posted by: adoncia - 02-22-2007, 11:48 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

Everyone who has taken or is taking Penn Foster's Tech Math course, please provide your feedback.
How easy/difficult is the course?
How did you do in the exams you have taken so far?
Do you recommend it?
Also I cannot find anything about this course on their website. I gathered from reading the posts here that it is a 2 credit course and called Penn Foster to find out. I spoke to Mary Beth, but she could not tell me much about whether Excelsior will accept it and for how many credits. After that I called Excelsior and they approved the course and informed me that if I want the course to be letter graded, then it would be worth 2 credits and if i want it to be ACE approved, then it would be worth 3 credits but pass/fail.
There is one Business Math and Finance course that they offer which is worth 3 credits but i cannot find that either and I guess the easiest of the three would be Tech Math 1.(the 3rd being Tech Math 2)
Also is it possible to pass the course with just the three online exams? I'll be leaving the country for awhile and I might not be able to take the 4th proctored exam while travelling.
Please help Shotu, Rbowman, Crystal and others
Thanks a lot,
Adoncia
P.S If i pass College Writing which i took on Tuesday, I will need only one class in Math/ Stats to complete my BS. I purchased some Statistics books and everything and started studying yesterday but am feeling  already and so decided to consider the course :o

  Books and Costs
Posted by: mapalo - 02-21-2007, 08:03 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

Hi Everyone

First I am so amazed about how much information there is on this forum.

I have a question and would like to hear some advice and what others think

How much should one spend on materials and books for Exam preparation.

I did a search on Macro and Micro Economics and I found different suggestions and books, by the time I was finished I had already book about 3 book from Amazon costing me about $40 totals.

How much is to much or too little; money wise and material wise

You input will be highly appreciated

Desperate. Has anyone appealed a failed CLEP?
Posted by: ssnelsen - 02-21-2007, 05:51 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (15)

I am desperately in need of some help. My husband needs 3.01 credits to graduate. He took the Natural Science CLEP (this was the schools recommendation) he failed by one point ( he got a 49) anyway. We called the people with CLEP and they suggested that we ask the school to grant him 3 credits since Natural Science is a 6 credit class and he was so close to passing. They said it would be the schools decision and that the school had the 'authority' to make this decision. Long story short, the school denied our request and told us to appeal. Specifically this is what they said, "For the appeal you will want to collect as much information as you can. See if you can find any information from CLEP or on their website about schools awarding some credit for a 6.0 credit test." I am now in search of this information, can anyone help us? Thank you!

I need to CLEP an elective. I just completed American Government today (passed) and would like one that is interesting AND most importantly, EASY as it is the very last thing I must pass to graduate. Any advice is MUCH appreciated.

Advice on which CLEP's to take
Posted by: Old Rusty Pipe - 02-20-2007, 03:48 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

I have the option of CLEPing Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, and Business Law. Of these three, I only need to test out of two. The third I must take online as a class in order to meet my residency requirement and graduate in July. I have heard that Business Law is the easiest out of the three, but that Macro and Micro also compliment each other very well. It doesn't really matter which I test out of, and which I take the online course for.

I just need to CLEP two, and take the other one as an online course.

Any advice on what I should do? Any help would be most appreciated.

Old Rusty Pipe
