American Government and American History I
Posted by: lillyfire3 - 09-20-2006, 07:14 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

Yesterday I took American History I and passed with a 61. This test covered about 10 questions on early colonial times.
Today I took American Governemnt and passed with a 53, I hope I don't get a Fedex pacakge telling me they have revised my score!
The materials covered in Instant Cert were adequate. My next Cleps will be either Natural Science or Biology and Principles of Management

Passed MIS with an A--More Advice Needed
Posted by: Basket Weaver - 09-20-2006, 07:07 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

I earned a 58, which is an A at Excelsior. Even better than the A is the information my councilor gave me on Civil War & Rec. and Rise and Fall of the Ruskies. If I take 2 of the following 3 courses it will prevent me from taking either of the history tests. Here they are:

Research Methods of Psychology
Juvenile Delinquency
Cultural Diversity

I know the history tests are passable, but to be honest, I really have no interest in them which makes studying for them a burden which is slowing down my progress. I want to get past this degree and back into real life. I'll do some searches on the forum as well but if anyone has personal experiences with these, especially the last two, please let me know. Regards, Lee

If you intend to do micro economics as well as principles of accounting, which is the logical order? Would princ. of acct'g help in getting ready for micro or vice versa?

How to go about that second degree at EC?
Posted by: ChristaKB - 09-18-2006, 03:48 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

I am almost done with my General Business Degree. I love how this thing is going and am contemplating a second degree in Psychology before it's too late Rolleyes

I know I need 30 additional credits to get that degree, my question is, what kind of credits? Upper level, specific psychology credits or just any liberal arts?

Just curious... BTW, what can you do with this degree? Does it make you an official psychologist that can open a practice or something?

Christa

  hello with some questions =]
Posted by: Blue - 09-18-2006, 12:03 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (14)

hi everyone! my name's jenny and i'm new to this forum as well as to the CLEP exams. i plan to take at least two CLEP exams so i spent the last hour or so reading about how everyone's been preparing. i must say, finding this forum has reduced my stress level by a bit purely b/c i had no idea how to study for them nor what to expect from them. so since you guys are all pros at taking these exams, can this noob ask you guys for some help? Big Grin hehe.

i'm definitely taking Principles of Management and Information Systems and Computer Applications. from all the advices from the board, i've come up with a study plan and if anyone has the time to take a look at it, can you please tell me if it's okie or needs more material? (keep in mind that i don't know anything about either subject)

1) i already bought the big blue college board clep book (18th ed). i also plan to sign up for instantcert.com for all of the exams.

2) Principles of Management: in addition to #1, i'm going to buy the white Comex review book as well as a textbook from barron's that's been said to work well as a study guide for the clep exam.

3) Info Sys and Comp App: i've been having a hard time finding materials for this exam. i'm planning to buy a textbook from a college bookstore but am not too sure which one to get so i'm just going to compare the table of contents to the list of what the clep is gonna compose of. does anyone have any textbook suggestions?

4) i'm thinking about taking a history clep exam for my 3rd exam. i haven't touched any kind of history for 5 years now so i hardly remember anything. :o haha. which history clep exam is the easiest to study for (if there are any)?

sorry for the abundance of questions but hopefully you guys can pass your clep wisdom to this noob. i need to get my studying started so i'm gonna check out books tomorrow. thanks for reading this massive message! :p

  Public Speaking help needed
Posted by: fondue - 09-17-2006, 12:05 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (30)

My exam is scheduled for Thurdsay and the only preparation I've had has been reading The Art of Public Speaking. I ordered Rudman's book but it hasn't arrived in 2 weeks and I don't think it will ever arrive.

I'm looking for a couple persuasive speech topics similar that that given during the DSST Public Speaking exam. Any assistance to get me over the pre-exam gitters will be appreciated.

Clep: American History II, Western Civilization II, Humanties
Posted by: lillyfire3 - 09-16-2006, 10:34 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

I am new to this board so I want to share my Clep experiences to date. I used the instant cert materials to study for the Humanities Clep exclusivly and passed with a score of 67.
American History II - passed 56
Western Civilization II- passed 56

Both of these tests were not hard. I am from Europe and never studied American History prior to Instant Cert so I think that resource is quite good. I got a score of 56 because I only studied for two days prior to the exam.

I am taking American Government and American History I next week and I am using the Instant Cert website along with the Peterson's practice tests along with the official Clep Exam Guide. I will let you know how I do. These tests by the way have a lot of questions that are very tricky.

Have a great day!

  DSST Online Redux
Posted by: charlie130 - 09-15-2006, 10:35 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

I may have missed it in the discussion threads, and I know that this had been discussed, but I came across the official word on availability of computer based, immediate scoring of DSST exams on the DSST website today, (together with the increased test fees). So I am posting it here in case anyone may have missed it. Thanks.

Quote:

Beginning October 1, 2006, Colleges and Universities can provide their students with paperless delivery via Internet-Based Testing.

  • Candidates will be able to obtain immediate test results.
  • Proctors will be able to use a more streamlined and efficient process.
Note: Since immediate scoring will not be available for the recorded oral speech for the DSST Principles of Public Speaking examination, it will continue to be administered in the same manner as it is today.

Test administrators should contact the DSST Program Representative at pnj-dsst@thomson.com for information on how to get started.

End Quote.

As to whether the test will be timed or not, and if timed, how much time, here is an email response from DSST I just received. Again please forgive me if this has already been posted.

Quote:

While the paper exams are untimed, they are designed to be completed in 90 minutes. The IBT exams will be a 2-hour timed test.

  GRE psychology
Posted by: MagicATC - 09-14-2006, 05:27 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

Just wanted to share a way to get mega credits at Excelsior for those who haven't heard of this yet. Here is what Excelsior emailed me back when I asked them about GRE Psychology. (I am going for a liberal arts)

If you take the GRE in Psychology, you have an opportunity to earn a lot of credits with one test.

Credits are awarded starting at the 35th percentile, adding 3 more credits for every 5 percentile points. The first 12 credits are always lower level. Credits at the 55th percentile and above are upper level. Examples of desirable scores are as follows:

80th percentile - A score of 685 will earn you 12 LL and 18 UL credits (a total of 30).
75th percentile - A score of 670 will earn you 12 LL and 15 UL credits (a total of 27).
(LL = Lower Level, UL = Upper Level)

what's wrong with Info. Sys. and Comp. Appl???
Posted by: CaroM - 09-14-2006, 01:52 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (9)

Just got back from taking the Info. Sys. and Comp. Appl. CLEP. Failed with a 46. I was shocked to see my score. Felt as prepared as I could have been and even felt confident while I was taking the test. I'm wondering what in the world I could have done differently in order for me to have gotten a passing score???
I worked through (several times) and understood pretty much all of the Instacert flashcards. I read Introduction to Computers & Information Systems by Larry Long. Plus, I took the practice test from the Official CLEP study guide and scored fairly well (then I reviewed my test and understood why I got certain questions wrong, and also went over the ones I got right).
Now I know that people say that you fail tests you feel good about... and you pass tests that you totally think you failed. But why do I feel like CLEP made a mistake? I swear... about 90% of that test I believed that I was understanding the questions they were asking and knew the answer for it. Any thoughts?
