In Search of Two Math Credits
Posted by: ShotoJuku - 06-12-2006, 06:07 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (8)

Hello All -

My quest for two credits in math allowing me to graduate has taken me from Tampa Bay to Las Vegas. Who needs to win a million dollars on the slots when I can may win 2 math credits instead!!

My quest will last for a week so I may not be as active here on the IC-Forums.

See you all when I get back; hopefully with 2 math credits in the credit bank. Oh who am I kidding - I'll take the $million$ too!!

  What's In A Name?
Posted by: ShotoJuku - 06-11-2006, 10:05 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (181)

I picked this up from another thread regarding the various nicknames that we use here in the IC Forums so I thought I would elaborate on mine - ShotoJuku.

To begin, I have been studying/teaching Japanese ShotoKan Karatedo since 1971. The founder of Shotokan - Gichin Funakoshi used the pen name of "Shoto" meaning "Pine Waves" and his style was subsequently called Shoto-Kan.

I use a derivative of ShotoKan retaining Shoto but added Juku meaning "special or private school" thus - ShotoJuku.

How about some of the other nicknames out there????

  Principles of Accounting
Posted by: snazzlefrag - 06-10-2006, 10:34 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (88)

Hi All,

After taking the Principles of Finance exam yesterday, I have decided to prepare for Principles of Accounting while the financial stuff is still firmly lodged in my head.

I plan to study for a week and see if I am starting to grasp the material. If not, I will drop this plan and go for Civil War, as originally planned.

Anyway, I wanted to provide some online resources that I have found, just in case anybody else is studying for this exam right now.

---

This first web site is already helping me understand the concepts. It takes you through everything step-by-step assuming that you know absolutely nothing about accounting (like me).

http://www.accountingcoach.com/index.html (includes "drills" at the end of each section)

This second link looks similar to the first one. It is an online book which takes you through all the necessary topics.

http://www.principlesofaccounting.com/

Here are the rest of the links I have come across so far...

http://www.rtc.edu/instruction/accountin...20Page.htm
(numerous online quizzes)

http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/00.../chapter1/
(managerial accounting)

http://www.mhhe.com/business/accounting/...mgracct_s/
(managerial accounting)

http://www.quickmba.com/accounting/

---

I hope somebody finds these resources useful.

Good luck,
Snazzlefrag

  Biology clep
Posted by: Librevore - 06-09-2006, 07:37 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (25)

Hello everyone,
Whoo hooo! Passed Biology today!! One down, Lord only knows how many to go but this one is in the basket!

On this test there were 14 to 15 questions that had dominant/recessive gene word problems. Knowing how to diagram a punnett square is invaluable for several of these questions.

2 to 3 questions on the chemical nature of genes and at least 10 other questions on the chemical composition of organisms.

I studied and studied cell division but there were only a couple of questions on this version of the test that applied. All 3 practice tests that I took had lots of those though so I wouldn't neglect it.

Had at least 15 questions that dealt with ecology and evolution.

And don't laugh but I found that this silly rhyme, " Kangroos play cellos, orangutans fiddle, gorillas sing," helped me to remember the classification order- kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. Answered 2 questions with this key.

That's all I remember right now.

Thanks to all of you for the encouragement of this board. No one here locally really thought it was possible so you all made the difference in even attempting this. hilarious

Librevore
Almost forgot to mention, I used IC supplemented with online encyclopedia lookups and 3 practice tests from Peterson's and Clep's Official Study Guide.

Anyone know of an online statistics class?
Posted by: Back2School - 06-09-2006, 02:17 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

I'm in Walden University's Business Administration degree program. They accepted CLEPS for micro and macro economics but they say I must attend class for the Statistics requirement. The class can be basically anywhere and can be online but they will not take a CLEP or any other test to fufill the requirement. Does anyone know of any colleges that offer an online statistics course that I can signup for without going through a bunch of hoops?

Thanks in advance!

  Algebra Blues
Posted by: tampalizard - 06-09-2006, 10:41 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

I just wanted to let you all know that Excelsior has approved the Brigham Young Algebra course. It is 17 lessons and turn in assignments, 17 quizzes, two proctored tests and one proctored exam. While it is a bummer that it has to be proctored...I can usually learn anything...even math, long enough to pass one test at a time. Plus...I figure if I do well on my assignments...all I have to do is well enough to PASS on the tests. The good part is that it only costs $380 (+/-) and they send you all materials (no book to pay for). It is also self paced so , unlike the classes I am taking through Excelsior right now, I do not have to spread it out over 4 months and I could , conceivably, still finish in August! This might be an option for anyone in a similar situation or time crunch. Good luck to all!Wink

  Has anyone taken these cleps?
Posted by: almostdone - 06-09-2006, 09:00 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

Has anyone taken American Literature, Analysis and Interpretation of Literature, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature?

If someone has, which is the easiest and what did you study for them?

I need one more humanities class to fullfill my degree at Embry-Riddle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  Which clep is easier?
Posted by: Back2School - 06-09-2006, 08:14 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

Algebra or College Mathematics?

I'm assuming that both of these are probably easier than biology, natural science, or chemistry if you have good math skills but know nothing about the science cleps.

Thanks in advance!

question of sociology exam for experienced ppl
Posted by: spazz - 06-08-2006, 11:27 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (13)

I have never taken a CLEP course before, so I dont really know what to expect. However, I am using InstantCerts sociology guide as well as a book I bought to read over. I have learned all the concepts that instantcert tests me on, however when answering the questions out of the book, I miss about half of them, and some of them are not related to anything that instantcert goes over. Could someone tell me if knowing the concepts instantcert teaches is enough to pass the sociology clep? And why might this be?

Thanks for your help and replies Smile
