New to forum but hearing same old thing from doubters...
Posted by: tampalizard - 04-25-2006, 09:28 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (31)

Hello, I am new to the forum but have been using InstantCert for over a year. I obtained my nursing degree from regents College (now Excelsior) in 1990. Back then, no one had ever heard of getting a degree by testing and they thought it must be a scam. I obtained my degree while working full time as an LPN and having two babies. I could NEVER have taken the time to attend classes.
I have run into the same stuff as you all have. "So..you are BUYING your degree?" and "So your not getting a REAL degree?" I have started decribing the testing as "taking the final exam without taking the class" This seems to make people understand that you STILL have to grasp the material in order to pass the test. Actually, I feel better about obtaining my degree through testing as opposed to paying an online university $400 to $600 a credit hour. Then I WOULD feel like I was buying my degree. I have passed every test that I have taken so far...thanks to InstantCert. I feel like I have learned quite a bit in my studying for the tests. It seems to me the InstantCert process simply removes the fluff and teaches the core material. That is what I like about it. So far I have not used any other resource to study. I have passed 8 Cleps and 2 DSST's using InstantCert alone. Tomorrow I take the Labor relations ECE exam. Since there is no InstantCert material for it...I am basically going in "cold". I will keep you all posted on how I do. Thanks for all the support.Smile

  CLEP fee increasing
Posted by: anar579 - 04-25-2006, 09:21 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (12)

I haven't seen anyone mention this, but the fee for CLEP is increasing from $55 to $60 on July 1, 2006. We need to update our budget plans!

TESC Operations Management and Business Policy exams
Posted by: hunter2115 - 04-25-2006, 01:09 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (9)

Has anyone taken either of these exams? If so, I would like to hear about your experience. I realize that TESC exams are way more expensive than most others, but it appears that the choices are extremely limited with regard to these 2 core business degree required courses. I guess what I'm trying to determine is whether or not the exams are realistically do-able, or is an Excelsior College course (or similar) a better option. Any insights? Thanks.

  Warning: Rant to follow

I just have to say, I am a huge proponent of using a tool provided by the creator of the exam. I have said on tons of posts, "take the ECE practice test..." "take the Collegeboard practice test..." "take the DSST practice test..."

Well, I'm trying to take the DSST practice test for Drug/Alcohol and it is totally hosed. I can get exactly two questions to come up, then it errors out - over and over and over. I'm spening way more time, logging off, closing the session, reopening it and logging back in than I could possibly dream of spending on actual questions. I'm on #8 and it's taken me a half hour (less the 5 minutes to fire off an email to their tech support).

This is sooooooo incredibly frustrating, it is too much to ask for it to work?

You know, we are all pretty tech savvy to be getting our degree in this fashion, so the tools to support this endeavor should work. Jeez!

So, from here on out, DSST gets no more free marketing from me.

Another way to save money on textbooks
Posted by: beckysharp - 04-24-2006, 02:56 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

Stumbled on to this today. Is anyone else familiar with Wikibooks? This is an open textbook format and it's free.

Here's the link. Check it out!

This is a history link, but I found it looking for Sociology resources.

Just put your subject in the search box and voila!

  Thomas Edison Prior Learning Assessment
Posted by: speeddegree - 04-24-2006, 10:30 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

Any thoughts from the group that have already attempted this program through Thomas Edison. I am contemplating what is a better move -- to start the PLA or focus strongly on studying and tetsing more CLEP/Dante. I have mixed bag of of 24 credits so far from Dante, and College.

I Would Have Found Instantcert Back In December Of '04 , Pushed My Self To Start 8 Months Ahead Of When I Started And Stopped Second Guessing Myself About Being Able To Do This Program. If I Had Done That Then I Would Be Through With School And Ready To Hire Some Of My Instantcert Online Buddies!!! God, Was I A Procrastinator ! So, To All Of You Out There Asking Yourselves, "can I Do This", I Say...hell Yes You Can So Stop Waiting For Just The Right Moment And Get Going.

CLEP College Mathematics -vs- SAT Math?
Posted by: ShotoJuku - 04-23-2006, 07:06 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (9)

I was wondering if anyone here in the IC group has any background on material contained in the SAT (Scholastic Apptitude Test) Math exam is comparable with that of the material in CLEP - College Mathematics?

The reason I ask is that it appears to me (a mathematics caveman who still uses finger and toes) that if they are similar perhaps SAT materials such as VIDEOS and DVD's might be helpful?

Thanks - any input would be deeply appreciated!!!!!
