I have now "earned" the Master of Letters degree in History from Charter University. I do not know what I can do with it or will do with it.

It's Time for My Son to Enroll at TESU. Is He on the Right Track?
Posted by: Rachel84in - 06-27-2024, 02:07 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (8)

First, I'm not very creative with usernames and I plead guilty for shamelessly borrowing a good formula that might help differentiate those of us with the same name.  Smile

I've been a long-time lurker and have been working with my son to put together a degree plan for him at TESU. He's studied for most of his CLEP exams using Instacert, which has been great for him. He'd like to get a BA in Liberal Arts as well as an AS in Business Administration. He's interested in banking and would like to pursue a part-time job at a bank and I think it would be good to put on his resume that he's enrolled at TESU.

Now that it's time to start thinking about enrolling, there are some things that are a little fuzzy to me.

  • It's recommended to sign up for the medical transcription TECEP (but not bother taking it) after enrolling. What exactly does this do or avoid?
  • It's my understanding the residency waiver does not need to be paid until time to graduate. Am I correct? (I don't see my son going the 15-credit route)
  • What would you recommend as far as finishing the degrees? I'm thinking he would just finish them both at the same time unless I'm missing something.

I'm attaching an outline of completed and anticipated course work that I think will fulfill the requirements and that my son is interested in taking.  I would appreciate a critique. Below are a couple of questions that have come to mind:
  • The DSST Public Speaking course is equivalent to TESU COM 3090. As a Liberal Arts course, would this fulfill one of the 15 cr. UL requirements for the Liberal Studies major? (understanding that another course would need to be taken to complete the total number of credits required in the area of study).
  • I'm a little unsure about using Introduction to Business, Ethics and Entrepreneurship from TEL to satisfy the Ethical Leadership requirement. McMurray University accepts it as "Ethics and Entrepreneurship in the Modern World." Any opinions on how TESU might accept it?
Thank you for taking time to look this plan. I know I wouldn't have been able to do it without the wealth of information on this forum. I'm looking forward to your feedback.

  Xamk enforces new change
Posted by: Avidreader - 06-27-2024, 01:57 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (17)

Sadly, it seems like Xamk has enacted a new rule and you forcibly need a Finnish social security number to sign up for new courses. There seems to be no way around this.
I was hoping they would continue offering their open university courses to foreigners if they paid the tuition, but it seems like they did this instead.
Well, at least I managed to sign up for a few courses right before this change happened.

A new program in Colorado recognizes students who didn’t complete their bachelor’s de
Posted by: davewill - 06-27-2024, 12:41 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

It makes so much sense to see that people get some recognition for the effort they've put in. It can both help their current job prospects, and provide the encouragement needed to consider picking up the bachelor's degree effort again.

https://www.cpr.org/2024/06/25/msu-denve...e-degrees/

Quote:The graduation ceremony at Metropolitan State University of Denver was the first of its kind to award associate degrees to former students who’ve completed at least 70 credits towards their bachelor’s degree but then stopped school. A minimum of 70 credits is about two years of college.

The Colorado Re-Engaged (CORE) initiative became law in 2021, and for the first time, it recognized that more than 25,000 Coloradans who invested time and money but for a variety of reasons had to stop their education, could be eligible for a degree to reflect the work they’d done.

“What this bill was really looking to do was to one, give you a mile marker to say you did do something and this was significant and two, hopefully, encourage you to re-engage with this opportunity for higher education,” said Shaun Schafer, MSU Denver’s associate vice president of curriculum, academic effectiveness and policy development.

WGU Raising Tuition to $4,125 in Sept 2024
Posted by: nykorn - 06-27-2024, 12:00 PM - Forum: WGU - Western Governors University Discussion - Replies (6)

Hey, didn't see this mentioned on the forums. I'm a current student and got an Email that WGU is raising its tuition from $3,975 to $4,125 per term (an increase of $150), not including the $200 materials fee. The increase will start September 1st 2024 and be valid for anyone starting a new term on or after September, as well as people starting before September but paying monthly. For reference, I'm in the Master's in Elementary Education.

  Modern States Reimbursement Question
Posted by: NOX - 06-27-2024, 04:31 AM - Forum: CLEP, DSST, and TECEP Exam Discussion. Also Modern States and InstantCert. - Replies (5)

Hello everyone,

I have a question about the test center reimbursement process. I made the request on June 11 and received a follow-up email telling me that the request was being reviewed and that I would receive an update when my request is approved or rejected. It is now June 27 and I have not received any emails. Is this normal, or should I contact Modern States?

  Speed-Running a Bachelor’s at 18 to Prep for a MS in PAs
Posted by: crystalxxxzzz - 06-27-2024, 04:24 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (14)

Your Location: California, United States
Your Age: 18
What kind of degree do you want?:
Open to suggestions
Need to get a bachelor’s (BS preferable) to qualify for a MS in Physician Assistant Studies
Would prefer to complete a bachelor’s as fast as possible so I can focus on clinical hours and prerequisite classes in local 4-year and community college (have an intimidating spreadsheet of classes I need to complete help)
Might prefer a degree in Accounting so I have a backup plan with good and stable job prospects.

Current Regional Accredited Credits:
Community College: 40 semester credits in total
ANTH 1, Biological/Physical Anthro (2020 - worried that credit might not count after 5 years)
ADMJ 50, Intro to Admin of Justice
SOCI 3, Intro to Race & Ethnicity
ENGL 1, Critical Reading & Composition
ART 2A, Intro to Drawing
COMM 1, Fundamentals of Speech Communication
NUTR 1, Intro to Nutrition Science
PSY 1, General Psychology
ARTH 1, Intro to Art (History)
BIOS 41, Fundamentals of Biology for Health Science
ENGL 4A, Critical Think/Write Lit
MTH 43, Intro to Probability & Statistics

Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits:
None (don't know where to start!) Was originally looking at CLEP to test out of some GEs for a traditional transfer into a 4-year university but considering doing a degree fast-track instead

Any certifications or military experience? None

Budget: I'd like to go the cheapest route possible, but will consider spending more if I can speed things up.

Commitments:
Can dedicate myself towards studies full-time during the summer (capable of studying 10 hours daily if necessary)

Planning to take in fall 2024 (full course load, so won’t have too much time)
BIO 7A, Human Anatomy
CHEM 1A, General Chemistry
Maybe: Ethnic Studies 42 or 43

Planning to take in spring 2025 (full course load, but can reconsider and push classes back to work on degree full-time):
Physiology
Chem 1B

Planning to do in summer 2025:
Medical Assistant certification course from May to September (8:30a-2:30p M-F) but can dedicate nights and weekends to studying
Externship (work full-time M-F) during October but can study on weekends and nights

Dedicated time to study: I can study as much as is needed during the night or weekends. During the summer until August 19, I am capable of studying 10 hours per day if necessary.
Unsure if I will have more than 4 hours weekly to study during the full-time fall semester though. Will make time if I have a plan.

Timeline: Finishing the courses required for the degree as fast as possible would be ideal. Prefer a year but that may be too ambitious. Would like to finish under 2 years at least if possible?

Tuition assistance/reimbursement: Not much, just a small scholarship so far but in the process of applying for at least 50 more

Test-Taking:
I'm not entirely confident in my test-taking abilities, but I am capable of scoring 100s in easier STEM classes with statistics and biology exams. Unsure of how to approach CLEP studies as I have no material to directly study/reference. Would like to test out but I have no idea what material to study specifically. Some people say that some REA guides didn't match up with the exams, and some say to just use InstantCert flashcards — with so much advice out there, it can get overwhelming without any specific materials to structure my learning around!

End Notes & Appreciation:
Thank you if you managed to make it all the way to end of this post. I understand that this is a lot of information, and I would be very grateful for any guidance or advice that you could afford me. I admire all the work that this community’s members have so generously devoted towards DegreeForum — seen so many threads of people selflessly giving their time and energy over to help strangers in need and it’s heartwarming to witness. (Notable mention and salutations to mods like bjcheung77 — who I heard about even before I stepped foot into DegreeForum! I see him on so many threads!)

  International Student in SNHU
Posted by: FullFocus - 06-27-2024, 04:22 AM - Forum: General "Big 3", B&M colleges, and other colleges - Replies (13)

Hello

This Post for International students (not applied if you hold USA passport), you can enroll in SNHU's India Online program. The courses are taught in English by Indian instructors, and you can receive a 60-65% scholarship, This scholarship reduces the total cost to just $3,735 for four years, which amounts to $933 per year. Additionally, there is a similar program for Spanish speakers, though I'm not sure of the exact details, but the cost is likely comparable to the program in India. You can find more information on the SNHU India website: https://in.snhu.edu/

  Computer Science in EU
Posted by: FullFocus - 06-27-2024, 04:18 AM - Forum: EU - Excelsior University Discussion - Replies (9)

I'm just curious why there's no degree plan in the wiki nor thread discussing the Computer Science and Cybersecurity degree from Excelsior University. They allow a transfer of up to 113 credits, which is quite generous.

Does anyone have information on their online courses? https://www.excelsior.edu/catalog/ Specifically, how much do they cost, and are they useful for transferring to other universities?
Any insights or experiences would be appreciated.

Question Guidance Requested - Degree Planning Help
Posted by: bandito_crispeta - 06-26-2024, 10:49 PM - Forum: Associates Degrees Discussion - Replies (12)

Hello!
I was born and raised out of the USA. I became a citizen this year, and I can finally make time to pursue an education. This is my biggest desire right now.

I do have a high school diploma, which will have to be translated into English, and I will be working on that this weekend.

My plan is to get a bachelor's in business. I plan on taking as many credits as I can through Sophia. Someone told me recently that I could transfer those credits into pierpoint and get a Board of Governors A.A.S. and then I can transfer to UMPI. I am considering Liberty University online as well.
I am so confused with all the terminology used in the education system... A.S. vs A.A.S... I have a loooong journey ahead of me.

Some people have mentioned an A.A.S. is not something you want to display on your resume (why not?), and that I'm better off just getting my credits from Sophia and then transferring them to the school where I want to get my bachelor's from. I will be 40 in 2 years. I want to do accelerated education to get my bachelor's in the least amount of time, and at low cost.

Are there any students on here than can offer me guidance as to what are the steps I need to follow to achieve the above?
Can you please tell me if you also had to get your HS transcripts, have that translated as well and then calculate your GPA?

Someone please help!!!!

Any general advice will be highly appreciated it. Should I contact Nancy from Pierpoint and tell her my story and see what she says?

Thank you.
