Should you utilize FEMA credits toward your Excelsior Business degree?
Posted by: auminer49r - 07-19-2007, 12:45 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (9)

Just a quick note: If you are in a Business degree program at Excelsior, don't bother doing more than 15 FEMA exams. They can only go toward the "Additional Credit Component" a.k.a. "Free Electives" a.k.a. "Applied Professional".

This 15 credit max. category is where all the additional overflow credits will go if you meet the requirements in all the other categories.

Let's say you only end up needing 3 Applied Professional credits, ask yourself if you want to pay TESC $400 for 3 credits Thomas Edison State College - Prospective Students - Undergraduate Programs - Tuition and Fees ? $180 for 3 credits at Fredrick Community College ($60/semester hr.) http://www.frederick.edu/download/progra...cation.pdf ? or maybe $30 a credit hour ($90) at Clackamas Community College CCC Criminal Justice Department - Emergency Management ?
... but wait... Clackamas gives quarter/hour credit, not semester/hour credit. So, who really knows how much 3 semester hours will cost? Is it a 2:1 ratio? Beats me. If it is, that's $180 for 3 semester hours.

I know 3 CLEP or DSST credits are about $90.

What I'm saying is that there may only be a certain range of credits you may need in order to make TESC the best choice for credit banking. Weigh it out once you know how many Applied Professional credits you are lacking and how much you will spend to get those remaining credits.

It is a judgment call between time, money, and effort involved.

It might be wise to analyze your degree plan in depth before building a stack of FEMA certificates. Smile (like SOMEONE I know... who will remain nameless... auminer49r) :o

  Macro today, ACT scores, etc.
Posted by: beckycan - 07-19-2007, 08:48 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (13)

Hi All,
I decided to go ahead and try the Macro CLEP today, even though I don't feel real confident. I figure I MAY pass it, and if I fail and have to re-take in 6 months, it's still cheaper and easier than taking the semester-long class.

I got back my ACT scores yesterday. (Missouri State requires incoming students to take the ACT to determine placement.) I was worried about math, but I actually scored high enough that they are saying I'm ready to enroll in Trig. It's not required for my degree, (Early Childhood Educ.) so I doubt very seriously if I will tax my brain with it!

My classes start Aug. 20, and I'm planning 2 more CLEPs before then -- Amer. Gov. in 2 weeks, and then Sociology 2 weeks after that. Will have 18 credits by exam this summer if I pass these last 3 tests.

My hubby calls me a CLEP-tomaniac! Wink I'm so thankful for IC -- I don't think I ever could do this without this great resource and all of you here on the forum who have offered advice and support.

Becky

Exam Taking Tip - Try it out!
Posted by: ridin8ude - 07-18-2007, 05:17 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

Hey everyone.
I'm in an accelerated learning course this week to complete the PMP exam.
This is a professional course, and they use all these 'in style' mumbo jumbo to help us learn info asap e.g. memory mapping, yoga, alternate nostril breathing!

Anyway a neat technique they taught us is how to grade yourself on practice exams or during an actual exam to know your result before you push that test complete button.

Formula is this:
.85x+.50y+.25z/total questions

You put the actual number of each question in a corresponding column based on your confidence in the answer e.g. if you think you got it right, put question 1 in the .85 column, if you guessed put question 2 in the .50 column, and if you had no idea put question 3 in the .25 column and so on.

This might only be news to me, but it works pretty well, and I find it especially effective for practice exams, and helps me to go back and look at the questions I wasn't confident about.

But the final calculation really let's you know where you are, so you aren't in the dark at the end of your exam!

If I need to illustrate better, just let me know Wink

Test to Satisfy Managerial Accounting Core Requirement
Posted by: milah1 - 07-18-2007, 07:59 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

I am currently enrolled at Excelsior College and am trying to finish my Bachelor's Degree in General Business as quickly as possible. I know there is a test that satisfies all the core business requirements EXCEPT it seems Managerial Accounting. Is it true that there is no CLEP, ECE, DSST or TECEP test that will fulfill that core requirement? If there is a test, which would fulfill that requirement? The Excelsior College business advisor said I would have to take a course to fulfill it. If someone knows the answer to these questions, please let me know as soon as possible. If I have to take a course, I have to register for it through Excelsior by August 31, 2007. Thanks for your help!

I am going to take the College Algebra CLEP soon and need some advice. Is college algebra really that different from Algebra II? Also, what books are best to study with? Is there anything online that I could use (preferably free)?

  College Algebra survey
Posted by: Kiwi Lover - 07-17-2007, 04:39 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (5)

Hi everyone,

For those of you who haven't already heard, Matymus (Matt) and his wife are expecting their first child any day now. Smile

Matt has been studying for the CLEP College Algebra exam. Today Matt told me that he is planning to take the exam during his "week off" after the baby comes! Being a mother myself, I laughed and told him he'd better plan on taking that exam BEFORE the baby comes, because for the first week afterwards his wife will want him home 24/7 (my opinion anyway). After reading Matt's reply to this, I told him I was going to post it in the forum, and I meant it! Matt's reply...

"Also...for the record, regarding Algebra....it was Christa who suggested me taking it during my week off. I said to her, "Darling dearie poo, are you SURE you're willing to let me go for a few hours so I can get this exam done?" She said......"Absolutely, my dear dew drop." So...there you have it.........HER IDEA. Not mine. Any blame for whatever may go wrong canNOT be placed upon me. I am absolved." Big Grin

So my question to all of you (especially parents and/or those of you who have taken that exam): Do you think Matt should take his CLEP College Algebra exam NOW...or wait until after the baby is born??

(Any stories from your own experiences as a first-time parent are welcomed. We need to let Matt know what he has to look forward to! :eekSmile.

  College Mathematics CLEP
Posted by: radyogyrl - 07-17-2007, 03:46 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (12)

I just returned from taking the college math clep and I passed it with a 62. I spent about 2 1/2 weeks studying for this exam. I used Cracking the Clep and the Collegeboard study guide only. The test was fairly easy.

For a moment I was alittle confused because I was expecting to see more probability questions than what was on there. Maybe they were on there, but they were so easy that I didn't think of them as probability questions. No dice or card questions was on my test. I had exactly one question on domain and range. I had no function graphs at all. The test was so different than what I expected from the study material that I used. It was actually kind of easy to me. There were a few questions that I had to guess on like the Standard Deviation ones but overall, it was a pretty ok test.

Some of the logic statements had two parts, for example:
I. When it is Saturday and sunny Ben goes to the beach
II. Ben does not go to the beach
It then goes on to say that both statements are true and to pick one that goes with it from the choices below.

For anyone who may be stressing about taking this test, don't. I is a lot easier than you expect it to be. Good luck.

Next for me is the Natural Science CLEP. Wish me luck.
