  Intro!
Posted by: cookderosa - 07-14-2007, 11:49 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

Hello, I didn't get a chance last week, so I wanted to just give an intro and say Hi! I plan to be here until at least next year. I just joined IC, but I have lurked the forums for months (unable to post as a lurker) which has been so helpful.

In October of last year I read a book called Accelerated Distance Learning by Brad Voeller. I read it "for" my children. I homeschool 4 of them during the day, and my oldest will be planning his high school....so I thought it would help me to prepare for his schooling. I, on the other hand, went to culinary school in 1990 and after a few years of "cheffing" took a job as the department head of a new culinary program at our community college. Had a baby and switched to teaching- I have been there ever since. Our program is an apprenticeship, so our students work off campus all week, and take 12 credits on Mondays. Nice deal for the teachers, we all only work one day per week year round. With homeschool, 4 kids, an exercise addiction, and just enough of a job to keep me busy- returning to college was the LAST thing on my mind.

After finishing Accelerated Distance Learning, I thought it might be a good idea for me to take a CLEP just to see what they were like. (for my kids of course ) I know a handful of homeschool moms who use CLEP as "final exams" for their high schoolers, and I want to do the same thing with mine. As my homework, I took an exam- Human Growth and Development- and I started thinking about how I might like to take some for "me."

I applied to EC and TESC. Turns out, that while the Culinary Institute of America is RA now, it was only NA when I graduated. The grace period was too long, and in the end I got zero transfer credit. I even called the CIA to ask about returning to finish my bachelor degree back with them- turns out they couldn't take my credits now that they have RA. (HA HA! Gotta love that) So, I started from scratch in January - enrolled in TESC BA Liberal Studies in June. I used an option they have called "credit for courses taught" to earn 28 transfer credits at TESC in culinary/hospitality for the courses I teach. This took care of my free electives. Worth all the paperwork and 12 (!) weeks of waiting.

Our "rules" around the house, the money I use to pay for my tests comes from my teaching salary -cough cough- (pays 2 CLEPS per month-InstantCert-and any other study guides) and I am using financial aid - which means a requirement of taking 6 credits per semester. That's fine. So, in a nutshell, I have to work it out so that it doesn't conflict with my homeschool time or the VERY LIMITED budget we have. I want to finish within the year to avoid the additional enrollment fee. It works out to taking 8 classes in all.

AND, if I didn't slide down the slippery slope fast enough, I decided to apply to grad school. I have at least 8 years that I need to be home full time, but after that I can return to industry- so, this is quite an adventure actually! I'll be trying to get into the Penn State Master Ed (Adult Education) program (requires GRE over over 1100) so if that doesn't happen, my back up is the U of Wisconsin MS Leadership Admin (Adult Ed/Workforce Development). My hubby and I (he is still a chef) are both taking a cert program at Cornell in the spring- his is free through his employer. So, seem like I fell back into my education full force- but I am having a great great time. It is hard to study in my limited amount of time, and I did fail one exam (Civil War) but i'll say what I have heard others say here- "I should have done this years ago!"Smile

I am so excited to have IC as a resource for me and probably my kids too! While they won't be doing online degrees, they will take CLEPs and DSSTs. I am thrilled to finally join in!

  Nutrition?
Posted by: dloth - 07-14-2007, 11:36 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

Has anyone needed to take a nutrition class? I am working towards my Bachelors in Nursing and that is one I need to take. So far I have only been able to find it at my community college (online at least), but if I could find a better way to take it I would be so much happier. My cc requires biology as a pre-req - maybe another place would just let me take it??? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Passed MIS abd Computer Info & Applica
Posted by: mapalo - 07-14-2007, 11:28 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (11)

I just passed MIS and computer applications.

I barely maded it for MIS I got 49 and the passing point was 46, I know I heard from people that this was an easy Exam, I thought it was very tricky because of the abbreviated questions throught out the Exams in regards to Management Information Systems.
Please please if any one trying to do this Know everything on Prototyping, GDSS, ESS, CMOS. MIRC, BPI, POS, TCP/IP/ FTP, and many more,

I knew what the where if when they were written in full, but I had a shocked when more of the Exam had abrevations, that's when I got confused, because there is really a thin line between all those letter.

As for Computer Info $ Applications, I thought I failed too, but was suprised and happy that I got 58.

I have to go out quickly if you need more info in these test, I can provide more info

Hello to everyone. Smile I am new to the discussions. Seems like most of you all are quite experienced in taking the exams. I will soon be taking the Eng.215-Composition CLEP Test (not really sure if I named it right). I was wondering if any of you have taken this CLEP exam already and if you could give me some pointers or advice. It will be my first one ever. I'm a bit nervous. Any suggestions would be most appreciative. Thanks

Just came back from trekking into the Pearson Site to take Gerentology only to be told that their system crashed and I couldn't test! Seems they couldn't call me because they had no idea who was coming in since the system was down. Gotta have a back-up plan for stuff like this. Suppose it could have been worse, it could have crashed in the middle of my test! Oh well, I'll be busy next week, three tests instead of two. Gotta go studyRolleyes

Passed Principles of Marketing - Boring Test
Posted by: tvelasquez - 07-13-2007, 10:42 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

I passed my first CLEP today. I took the Principles of Marketing and passed with a 51. I took this test first because I heard it was easy, however, I found it to be so boring that I had a difficult time studying for it, coupled with studying for Cisco CCNA which I also passed and poor planning on my part, taking the exam after working 12 hours and getting 3 hours of sleep, but a pass is a pass for CLEP. I did make it thought all of the IC sections and I took the 3 practice test in the REA 5th edition book.

I’m glad this one is over, now I can start studying for the fun ones!hilarious

For anyone preparing to take this exam know the following:

Pricing Polices and Strategies (Price Elasticity, Psychological pricing)
Distribution Systems (channel functions and Behavior)
Product Life Cycle
Brand Management
Product Mix and Concepts
Demographics
Market Segmentation
Organization and Industrial Markets
Marketing Ethics

  Financial Accounting
Posted by: bean - 07-13-2007, 12:47 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (7)

In the TESC 2007-2008 catalog http://www.tesc.edu/catalog/pdf/catalog.pdf
it seems to have CLEP Financial Accounting listed as 6 hours. Is this a mistake? Is it really speaking of the old test, "Principles of Accounting" which included the managerial.

Also, has anyone taken the new one yet? I was suppose to take the old one two days after I was evacuated from my home due to flooding:eek: . I had to cancel so I will be taking the new one soon. It would be great if it still counted for the 6 hours.

Thanks for any help,
Mark

Excelsior News - Title IV Financial Aid Approval
Posted by: barcotta - 07-12-2007, 11:26 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

The only thing that ever gave me a smidgen (an upstate NY word--it means "very tiny") of concern about Excelsior College was their lack of a Title IV financial aid program. As far as I could tell, most regionally accredited schools qualified under Title IV for federal financial aid. Why didn't Excelsior? The other two (Thomas Edison and Charter Oak) were Title IV schools. It's not like Excelsior (USNY Regents, Regents, etc.) hasn't been around just as long--since the days of orange kitchen counters!

It also bothered me a little that I could not find ANY information explaining the absence of a Title IV program ANYWHERE. The only thing I could find was that they had applied. Well, via snail mail, I received the attached letter in which President Ebersole announces that Excelsior has been notified that they have been approved to offer Title IV financial aid. I think that's a big deal in terms of bolstering credibility for their school. Many on this board attend Excelsior and there's a constant stream of newbies gathering information to choose a school. Hopefully, the attached letter which contains this news and more will be helpful to you all.
