  Calculators for exams
Posted by: blueyzz28 - 07-10-2007, 02:07 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

Here is what my testing center informed me as it relates to calculators:

Larry,

We will provide you with a very basic solar non-programmable calculator (sharp elsi mate EL – 334F) as we have done in the past.

Students are not allowed to use their own to avoid insistencies. By using the calculators we have always provided, there is assurance that all DSST exams that allow a calculator to be used are being proctored the same way for everyone.

If I can assist further, feel free to let me know.

This seems very odd to me. The calculator they want me to use, I can not find. It is not on Amazon. This seems odd that you can not use a calculator with the Standard Deviation button, Present Value, Future Value, etc. These calculators are used and allowed when testing in a traditional school.

  Excelsior Business Strategy Course
Posted by: ridin8ude - 07-10-2007, 11:43 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (7)

I've tried searching the forum, and can't seem to get this info.

Since Excelsior are changing their requirements for business degree's as of Sept 1st. The only option after that will be to take their Business Strategy as a class/course.

Has anyone taken this course? Does anyone have a syllabus?
I can't seem to find specific course details on their website.

I'm interested to know:
- how much effort the course will be
- if the exam(s) will be proctored, and how many?
- How do their online courses work e.g. is it paced, can you go out your own speed, can you finish it in a few weeks?

Timeline guidance and DANTES exam alternatives
Posted by: VinSomething - 07-09-2007, 10:29 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

Hi all,

I'm a newbie - been lurking and soaking up all the great information here.

I am trying to meet prerequisites for an MBA program and need the following 6 classes:

1. Microeconomics (plan on taking CLEP)
2. Marketing (plan on taking CLEP)
3. Organizational Management (plan on Independent Study MGMT 301 at Colorado State U. - thanks for the tips on this cheap alternative!)
4. Production/Operations Management (plan on Independent Study MGMT 311 at Colorado State U)
5. Statistics (I just found out my school doesn't accept DANTES exams)
6. Managerial Finance (no DANTES option here either)

I was a bit concerned with timelines, but I think that knocking out the first 4 in a 5-month timeframe is doable.

I've been looking for an independent study option for #5 and #6? Does anyone have suggestions? I have the option to take the courses at my school, but I am looking for something self-paced and less than $1300.

I hope I'm not getting in over my head, but I'd like to meet all my prereqs before the end of the year so I can start in the Spring.

  Excelsior Question
Posted by: jec959 - 07-09-2007, 08:45 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (12)

I am thinking about transferring from umuc to excelsior as there is a requirement that the last 30 credits at umuc be taken only with them. This sucks as I took almost all courses with them, and the few I transferred in are to old now etc. etc. As I now have around 85 credits (counting cleps recently taken) or so with them I can't test out too many more. My academic advisor is very unresponsive to questions doesn't return phone calls and rarely replies to emails so I am getting frustrated in trying to map the 10 courses I would need anyway.

I applied to excelsior and got the follow unofficail eval

gen ed component
45 credits in arts & sciences
- at least 42 in arts & sciences
- at least 3 in humanities
- 3 in social sciences
- macroeconomics
- microeconomics
- college algebra
- statistics
- 3 credits free electives

business component ( i am lacking here because my umuc degree was information systems management and the excelsior degree will be business with information systems management concentration)

at least 6 credits in business subjects to include
- intro acct I & II (mine were disallowed as the college I took them at was new england acredited and not regionally acredited)
- business law (same with this course)
- managerial finance or financial management
- intro to marketing (will clep at end of this week)
- intro to mgmt
- production/ops management
- business policy

(seems like a heck of lot more than 6 credits though doesn't it)

Organization behavior that will be applied to social sciences

I didn't send my clep transcript until later so will add freshman comp, principles of mgmt, info systems & computer apps, and american government to the mix.

I am looking for feedback on whether it seems crazy to transfer or not. I could just finish where I am (courses cost around $1300 a piece). But it seems from what I have been reading here I could finish faster and cheaper with excelsior than umuc.

This question says the example is for the Consumer Price Index for 2002, but the table says 2001. Does the CPI from 2001 get counted as 2002, or is this a typo?

Hey, I'm taking my Soc clep in about a month. I'm doing IC flashcards, and my question is how well does the IC flashcards ACTUALLY prepare ypu for the actual clep exam? Is there anything else I should be looking at? How in depth is the actual test, or is it just definitions?
Thanks for the help!
