  Excelsior Question
Posted by: jec959 - 07-09-2007, 08:45 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (12)

I am thinking about transferring from umuc to excelsior as there is a requirement that the last 30 credits at umuc be taken only with them. This sucks as I took almost all courses with them, and the few I transferred in are to old now etc. etc. As I now have around 85 credits (counting cleps recently taken) or so with them I can't test out too many more. My academic advisor is very unresponsive to questions doesn't return phone calls and rarely replies to emails so I am getting frustrated in trying to map the 10 courses I would need anyway.

I applied to excelsior and got the follow unofficail eval

gen ed component
45 credits in arts & sciences
- at least 42 in arts & sciences
- at least 3 in humanities
- 3 in social sciences
- macroeconomics
- microeconomics
- college algebra
- statistics
- 3 credits free electives

business component ( i am lacking here because my umuc degree was information systems management and the excelsior degree will be business with information systems management concentration)

at least 6 credits in business subjects to include
- intro acct I & II (mine were disallowed as the college I took them at was new england acredited and not regionally acredited)
- business law (same with this course)
- managerial finance or financial management
- intro to marketing (will clep at end of this week)
- intro to mgmt
- production/ops management
- business policy

(seems like a heck of lot more than 6 credits though doesn't it)

Organization behavior that will be applied to social sciences

I didn't send my clep transcript until later so will add freshman comp, principles of mgmt, info systems & computer apps, and american government to the mix.

I am looking for feedback on whether it seems crazy to transfer or not. I could just finish where I am (courses cost around $1300 a piece). But it seems from what I have been reading here I could finish faster and cheaper with excelsior than umuc.

This question says the example is for the Consumer Price Index for 2002, but the table says 2001. Does the CPI from 2001 get counted as 2002, or is this a typo?

Hey, I'm taking my Soc clep in about a month. I'm doing IC flashcards, and my question is how well does the IC flashcards ACTUALLY prepare ypu for the actual clep exam? Is there anything else I should be looking at? How in depth is the actual test, or is it just definitions?
Thanks for the help!

  Getting all nervous....
Posted by: studyhard - 07-09-2007, 02:52 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (17)

I'm glad I have you guys to fret at the day before a test. Smile

I am taking the DSST Civil War and Reconstruction tomorrow. I really dislike not having a practice test to gauge how well I'm doing. *sigh* I went all the way through a 660-page book that was an overview of the war and have done most of the IC sections about 4 times, only missing about 5 questions on each. I feel really solid on the causes of the war and the political side 'cause I've studied that for years, but I'm pretty fuzzy on the actual battles, which I always found sorta boring.

I'll probably do fine but I'm starting to nibble my nails and get anxious. Anyone want to pat me on the head and tell me to calm down? LOL!

High Drama...Paper Based Statistics and Rush Delivery
Posted by: steelers - 07-09-2007, 02:05 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - No Replies

Excelsior needs my Statistics score by July 23rd to apply my annual student services fee towards my graduation. This would save me $495! The problem is that the 23rd is 14 days away. My last Dantes exam made it to Excelsior in 3 days, however it was computer based. I was just informed that the computer based exams are down at my testing center and that I will have to take the paper based version. This is a huge blessing as far as passing the test because of no time restrictions, however I get no immediate score and it may not arrive to Excelsior on time.

I believe that the paper based score reporting are a lot slower. Is that true? I was told that for an additional $20 I can request rushed delivery. The testing center claims that this option guarantees the score to arrive within 15 days. Has anybody heard of this? I could really use a few more days of preparation, but I have no choice. I have to take it tomorrow. Hopefully, without the time restrictions, I can grind my way through for a passing score. I can see this being an agonizing 4 hour marathon!

  Prior Learning Assessment
Posted by: auminer49r - 07-09-2007, 10:43 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (7)

Hello all you wild and crazy exam takers!! I would like to hear your thoughts and opinions about a certain topic.

I am curious about Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) and I would be interested to hear feedback from others who have taken advantage of it. It doesn't seem to be a very popular alternative when compared to CLEP and DSST exams. Is there a reason why?

If you have earned PLA credits, I would be very interested in hearing about your experience. Please explain the process from a personal perspective and explain the Pro's and Con's.

Here are a couple of questions I have about the program:
Are the requirements clear-cut and predictable?
Do we have to take a shot-in-the-dark and hope the grader likes it?

The whole process seems confusing to me at this point. Nonetheless, I am interested because it appears to be a quick method of gaining credits with minimal studying, if any.

Let's discuss this. Smile

Finally received my TESC/FEMA transcription after 6 weeks.

Here's the breakdown and TESC equivalent:

IS001 - EDM101
IS003 - EDM399
IS007 - EDM103
IS008.A - EDM190
IS010 - EDM191
IS011 - EDM192
IS015.A - EDM223
IS111 - EDM193
IS120 - EDM120
IS139 - EDM203
IS208 - EDM126
IS230 - EDM107
IS235 - EDM224
IS240 - EDM207
IS241 - EDM208
IS242 - EDM209
IS244 - EDM210
IS271 - EDM242
IS275 - EDM124
IS288 - EDM122
IS292 - EDM200
IS301 - EDM172
IS324 - EDM121
IS346 - EDM155
IS386 - EDM232
IS-393.A - EDM140
IS513 - EDM303

Credit not awarded (I think by mistake because there is a TESC course to match):
IS279 - EDM130 (I contacted TESC this morning to have credit issued)

Credit definitely not awarded (no TESC course match):
IS005.A
IS302
IS331
IS394.A
IS546

27 credits awarded, hopefully 28 once TESC corrects their error.
