Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: None
Any certifications or military experience?: No
Budget: 10k max
Commitments: None
Dedicated time to study: Unlimited (Currently at home, no kids, no job)

Hi all, I really want to get a degree in Geography with a focus in GIS. Myself and hubby are South African here on visa’s and in the process of getting our green card so do not qualify for any financial assistance. Have been looking around and found Liberty University who are offering a BS in Geography - Physical Geography. With all my reading and researching I can definitely get a couple of transfers in with Sophia and Study.com. They also offer a 15% discount through Sophia. Basically just wanting to know if there is a sample degree plan for this and if this is the cheapest/quickest option?
Thanks in advance!!

Would like to get a masters LMHC currently have a BOG
Posted by: Hiltswordstone - 11-18-2024, 01:20 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (12)

I currently have an associate's degree from Pierpont and I'm 29 (M) out of Austin, TX. I previously ran my own arbitrage business, but I disliked greatly. I've worked with kids, though, and I do enjoy the work. I would like to go into mental health care with an emphasis on children. I'm not sure where to go from here.

Here are my thoughts: I would prefer to do the bachelor's online, maybe a Bachelor's in Psychology from UMPI, then ask for letters of recommendation from all the professors. This might increase my chances of getting into the LMHC Master's program. I feel I should take as many letter-grade classes as possible. I used Sophia for all but one letter-grade class from Clackamas for my associate's degree from Pierpont.                                                                                                                                    I'm open to an online Master's program, as long as it's hybrid and I could actually get a degree, but I'm totally open to a physical location for the Master's if it's feasible.

Any thoughts or guidance is deeply appreciated.

Any accelerated online engineering bachelors out there?
Posted by: jobojoe285 - 11-18-2024, 12:35 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (13)

Someone I know is thinking of career changing into an engineering career (I think electrical, so the program would be computer or electrical engineering). Their concern is not wanting to spend 4 years doing a "standard/classic" degree, so I've been trying to help and see if there's any accelerated programs like WGU, etc. I found some online degrees in this but they seem to be standard university where you must complete in 4 years, but can be done online.

Anyone know if there's anything that can be accelerated (provided the person can learn quickly, etc.)?

Is it possible to grad with both BLS and BAS?

Pretty much what the subject line says. Can you graduate with both BLS and BAS degrees using the minor, if you meet all other requirements?

Hi everyone, interested in their doctorate program though they claim to be accredited - still questionable you know. Should I go ahead with this online university? It’s just a DBA that I’m going after, do not intend for any sort of license to be used to practice whatsoever. Thank you all!

  Bachelor's degree planning advice
Posted by: Texas12345 - 11-18-2024, 12:20 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (6)

Hello, everyone! Long time listener, first time caller. Wink (Reader since around 2019)

Thanks for having a great forum and being such a wonderful source of information and guidance! I wanted to go ahead and fill out the template and see what advice forum members might have. Thanks!!!

Your Location: Texas, USA

Your Age: 39

What kind of degree do you want?: Bachelor's.
I was attending school full-time but had to stop because of a financial situation. Have not been able to get all transcripts because of this but expect to be able to fairly soon, probably in the next few months.
Probably General Studies / Liberal Arts / Liberal Sciences, Organizational Leadership / Business, Computer Science, Mathematics, or similar.
Especially considering TAMUC / East Texas A&M Competency-based programs, but open to other options. UMPI, Northern Arizona University, TESU, Excelsior, etc.
If possible, it would be great to avoid proctored exams b/c I don't really have a convenient place to take them currently, but I could probably find somewhere if I really needed to.
Longer-term, thinking of eventually trying to get into the interdisciplinary STEM Ph.D. program at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (taught in English), a STEM Master's or Ph.D at University of Texas, or another program. Also potentially interested in International Relations, National Security, Foreign Policy, Foreign Languages, etc. Also considering Harvard Extension ALM Management or STEM ALM, UPenn MCIT, or others. Or possibly an MBA with Hellenic American or WGU or one of the AACSB online MBAs at a Texas public university, or another MBA program.

  Seeking Doctorate in Education
Posted by: williamstim938@yahoo.com - 11-17-2024, 03:59 PM - Forum: Doctorate Degree Discussion - Replies (6)

Hello, I am seeking advice for finding a doctoral program in education.  My situation is unique because I am ABD from a higher education administration program but due to my advisor dying and time limits, I was not able to complete the degree.  I have over 90 hours of coursework past a Masters degree with doctoral courses in higher education administration, physical education, psychology, and educational leadership.  On the professional side, I have created and implemented  programs and curricula within each of these areas.  At this point, I am not wanting to retake courses that I have used to actually successfully implement solutions in multiple real world settings in addition to teaching these things to higher education students. What type of program will be respected in the US but will have me hit the ground and have me complete the doctoral degree by actually doing what a person on the doctoral level does instead of repeating coursework to hear about concepts, frameworks and worldviews that I have implemented and/or taught.  Can any suggestions be made in terms of programs that operate along the previously mentioned lines?  Any information would be appreciated.

Lightbulb Three-Year Bachelor's Degrees and DEI Requirements
Posted by: Ares - 11-17-2024, 05:35 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (22)

Three-Year Bachelor's Degrees Could Become the Standard—If Accreditors Allow It (Reason)

Quote:Last week, Johnson & Wales University (JWU) in Rhode Island announced the launch of the nation's first in-person, three-year bachelor's degree programs. While other institutions already offer three-year bachelor's degrees, these programs are either exclusively online or require 120 credit hours. JWU students will be able to complete a degree in computer science, criminal justice, graphic design, and hospitality management within 90 to 96 credit hours.

The launch of JWU's program follows a recent wave of support for similar initiatives across the country. In March, the Utah Board of Higher Education authorized state colleges to explore creating three-year bachelor's degrees. That same month, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a law requiring each of the state's public four-year colleges to review their bachelor's degree programs to determine whether they could be completed in three years. [...]

Critics of three-year degrees have raised concerns that these programs will reduce interest in liberal arts courses, which may have personal value for students and faculty but offer little use in the job market. Kenneth Mash, the President of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, told Stateline that he has "visceral disdain for the idea" because of the potential it has in creating a two-tiered system where only wealthy students have the privilege of receiving a well-rounded four-year education.

Nothing can be a bigger waste of time than taking most Liberal Arts courses, especially when it is not your choice but required (DEI, Diversity, etc..). With all this material for these courses free on the Internet I have no idea how anyone would be able to keep up with the "Rich"! Rolleyes
