  Intro to Sociology CLEP information
Posted by: auminer49r - 08-08-2007, 04:19 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (14)

Hello all,

I just scored a 66 on the Intro to Sociology CLEP. So, I thought I would pass along a few pointers.

You may want to study these topics in addition to the flashcards:

Know a thing or two about Erving Goffman, Cooley, Compte, Durkheim, Mead, and Marx and Weber. (The only names necessary)
Know the difference between the Halo effect and a glass-ceiling (workplace promotion).
Know "assimilation vs. integration"
Know "amalgamation"
Know "dramaturgy"
Know the textbook definition of a "crowd".
Know "cultural pluralism".
Understand socio-economic classification.
Know the current trends regarding marriage vs. white-collar workers.
Know the players that make up "the power elite" and who wrote it.
Know why women have an increased interest in sports since the 70's.

The flashcards really are on-the-mark and you should score well with flashcards and common sense alone.

Have fun.Smile

Can anyone make a recommendation on which to take first? Princliples of Finance or Principles of Statistics? Do they overlap at all?

Help! Need to take two at a time...
Posted by: almostdone! - 08-08-2007, 11:42 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

Hi,
I have until the 30th to take four DSSt/CLEP exams (just found out my TESC enrollments over then). If you have any suggetions on which two you have found to be "common sense" type exams or one's that correlate well, it would be appreciated. My major is Psych and these are free electives.

I haven't taken any Business exams, so if you know of two that are relatively easy, I'm interested in those. Also, I'd like to do Educational Psyh, but wasn't sure what to take along with it (perhaps Organizational Behaivor?). ARGGGHHHH! (just had to get that out, lol). Thanks!

  Help!!! Business Law
Posted by: sadia - 08-07-2007, 11:36 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

Hi, I am new at the forums and I signed up because I want to take Business Law clep and I have no clue where to start from. The questions seem so hard and hard to remember. I am still stuck on the first set of questions even though and everytime I go back to answer it, I just can't remember anything.
Please if someone can help me with this or tell me exactly what to study and what not to study in order to pass the clep, I will appreciate it.

  First 60+ Score - Passed!
Posted by: tvelasquez - 08-07-2007, 07:52 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

My first 60+ exam, I took the Principles of Supervision today and walked away with a 62, last week I passed the Principles of Management with a 54.

I’m hooked; I’m starting to have a great time taking test. I like the DSST over the CLEP; maybe they seem easier because you only have 4 choices instead of 5. – Now on to my next test U.S. History I:

Okay guys- I studied only IC and passed, but could have scored much higher if I had spent time looking through the Management Information Systems flashcards too. There are ALOT of systems questions on the exam. Study up on topology, pseuodocode, mail merge, public domain, groupware, compiler, outsourcing, expert systems, gui, scanners, job requirements for each technical position, FTP, Hubs, HTML, & Token Ring. Hope this helps & good luck!!

YAY! Passed that stinkin' Modern Middle East! :D
Posted by: studyhard - 08-07-2007, 01:14 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

Whew!!!! Am I glad that's over!!! I got a 63. Yahoo!!!!

Here's some feedback for those of you working on it right now....I'll paste this in the specific feedback section also. I wish I could remember more suggestions, but I was so stressed it was hard to keep my brain in gear. Smile

*Know what the Histadrut is
*Know what the Nakba is (I think that is the word)
*Know exactly what persuasion (Arab, non-Arab, Muslim, non-Muslim, Sunni or not) the Copts and the Armenians are
*Know what sparked Nasser to nationalize the Suez Canal
*Know what the "Sultanate of the Women" is
*Know which work is considered the epitome of the Arab novel
*Know which Middle Eastern leader was most responsible for the Ottomans joining the Central Powers in WWII
*Know a little bit about Huda Shaarawi (I think it was) and why/where she removed her veil
*Know which countries countributed to the overthrow of Reza Shah
*Make sure you're quite familiar with the Tanzimat and the Young Turks

Suggestions for study:
1. Study a LOT. I put in 30-40 hours.
2. IC is helpful but is NOT enough. I could only answer about a 30-40% of the questions based on my knowledge from IC.
3. I used the book "A History of the Modern Middle East" by William L. Cleveland for details. It is very thorough and covers a LOT of details. It gave me a lot of background to be able to make a number of educated guesses on questions I didn't know the answer to. I would definitely recommend it.
4. Use the DSST outline (The DSST Program : Students&Adult Learners) to see the breakdown of what is on the test. I took the outline and made my own notes, culling from IC, the Cleveland book and the internet. This helped me keep track of what was going on.
5. Search the internet for timelines. I had a lot of trouble keeping track of what was happening when, so printing off some timelines on the Ottoman empire, Iran, and Israel helped quite a bit.

The test itself follows the DSST outline breakdown fairly accurately. There was more stuff about modern events than I had anticipated, based on others' reports.

I felt 95% confident on about 15-20 questions. Most of the rest I could rule out one or two of the answers, but then had to make an educated guess. And some I had to guess completely. Don't go into the test expecting to answer all the questions with confidence. Big Grin

The test is a lot of work, but it IS passable, so don't be discouraged!! You can do it!

I did my enrollment with excelsior college this morning and asked an advisor if the following courses with Penn Foster college would apply to business degree - information systems management. They will take the technical math, statistics and financial management as transfers. I thought I would share for those of you who do not want to take these as tests and are looking for a reasonable priced alternative. Here is the email I received so I do have this in writing.Smile
